The Forgiveness Festival in Jainism

in #vegan6 years ago (edited)

Today, the most important annual holy festival of Jainism called Paryushan Parv has started. Paryushan is the 8 day festival of soul purification celebrated by Shvetamber sect of Jain religion. Digamber sect's fest is called Das Lakshana and is celebrated for 10 days after the Paryushan parv of Shvetamber ends.

During these fests, Jain followers strictly follow the 5 fundamental vows of Jainism and also observe penance through several methods according to one's individual capacity. They go for a daily discourses of Jain saints in the morning and perform their religious meditation practice in early morning and evening hours.

The last day of these festival is celebrated as Samvatsari or Kshamavani i.e. Forgiveness Day. On this day every one forgives everyone else by begging for forgiveness from all other beings of 8.4 million species of this Universe by saying Michchhami Dukkadam. This means that if I was the cause of any misdeed or offence whether knowingly (intentionally) or unknowingly (unintentionally), through my thoughts, words or actions; then I beg for your forgiveness.

On this occasion, my friend @chetanpadliya shot my video in which I request to all those Jains who are still not following vegan lifestyle to adopt non-violent dairy-free life to avoid violence (directly or indirectly) on all sentient animals through their acts. This video was further edited by Rohit Jain's You Tube channel to clear some background noise and made me more audible. Here's the link to this video:

For the people who couldn't hear it properly, I'm writing down the script (which I intended to speak but may have missed some of it 😊) here:

Many have requested for its English translation. So here's a rough English translation to this:

To all of you compassionate, kind-hearted, non-violent, religious-oriented mumukhshu sisters & brothers, my humble reverence with Jai Jinendra!

I, Ashutosh Nirvadachari, am resident of Udaipur city of Rajasthan. Five years ago i embraced nirvadya (vegan) lifestyle, which is known by the name of vegan or veganism in western culture. It is that scientific and non-violent life-style, in which any violence against any *tras-kaaya (sentient) creatures is considered unnecessary for human life. i.e. the use of any sentient creature is completely prohibited for human's selfish interests whether it's a cow or buffalo, goat or sheep, bee or poultry or any other sensory creature. Alife dependent only on the one-sensed organisms that grow from the land was called nirvadya / vegan. And all products produced from sentient beings or from the use of sentient beings have been deemed to be the cause of intense violence. Therefore, all of us, intellectuals, who are on the path of non-violence; it is imperative to avoid such cruel and violent products as much as possible.

Since Vegnanism is a foreign word, many Jain devotees have an illusion that this is something that Is a part of a foreign culture and is against the Jain philosophy. But funny thing about this is that origin of the fundamental concept of veganism is actually based on Jain principles. In fact, we should be proud of it. That the concept of nirvadyata and supreme non-violence was at first given to this world by Jain religion only.

The sole goal of veganism is to prevent all unnecessary violence against all sentient animals being inflicted upon them by humans and to provide them their own natural, independent and free life. As early as thousands of years ago, Jainism had given a subtle explanation on the fact that no creature should ever be enslaved, should not be subject to your command, nor should they give any suffering or tortured nor they should be intimidated in any way. Chains, shackles, sticks, whips etc. violent implements are completely prohibited. Even the piercing of the ears, lips, nose etc. of any creature is not allowed. Five transgressions to the anuvrat (tiny vow) of nonviolence for the Shravakas (householders) are described as: piercing, enslaving, torturing, overloading and restriction to food & water intake. Apart from this, It has also given the principle of Aasteya or Achoryavrata (principle of non-stealing) and also narrated about Abhayadan (principle of offering dauntlessness). So it's obvious that even the animal husbandry is not compatible with Jainism. Therefore, we should take care of all our nourishment needs from plants only.

But unfortunately, over time, the Jain community accepted the consumption of milk obtained from milch animals. And today we have become addicted to the consumption of so much of milk products like milk, curd, ghee, mawa, paneer (cheese) etc. that we are feeling uncomfortable to return to our own fundamental principles! We have fallen for momentary sensual pleasures and become slave of our own tongue. And have started to ignore the fact that how ruthless and gross violence is being incurred on those voiceless, helpless, meek, submissive, innocent animals due to the desire of our consumption of their milk, when we can easily stop it. We only need to replace our animal-milk based dishes with plant-based milk dishes. Just with this initiative of ours, we can change the life of billions of creatures.

And to start this auspicious act, there is no better opportunity than the great Paryushan festival. So I have a sincere request to all to stop the consumption of milk obtained from any animal from this festival. On the auspicious occasion of the great festival of forgiveness viz. Samvatsari, we get an opportunity to seek forgiveness for all mistakes and sins we committed so far. But true apologies are only possible when after learning and knowing everything, we stop repeating our mistakes in the future. Otherwise, forgiveness is just a formality.

On behalf of millions and millions of five-sensed animals who choke to their death every year, I make a humble prayer to you that we should seek forgiveness with being true at heart while practising purity in our habits and actions and thus Increase the dignity of the Samvatsari Maha-Parva by making it truly worthwhile. I hope that you will pay attention to my request and try to honour it.
Jai Jinendra!

For those who think that they are doing their bit by donating their money to Gaushalas (cow-shelters), please note that these too are not free from cruelty and you are not addressing the root cause of exploitation of animals if you are still consuming their products. Here is a link to recent report on 179 Gaushalas from FIAPO (Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organisation). Check the reality:
