Part 1: Day of the Virgen de los Desamparados - Fireworks & Mass Dance
Today is the Day of the Virgin in Valencia, and festivities already started last night, with fireworks and a mass traditional dance at the Plaza de la Virgen. The dance started around 12:30am! The following video is one I took last night, but the photos and text are from an article published on our Valencia Blog in 2015.
On the second Sunday of May, Valencia celebrates its patroness, the Virgen de los Desamparados (Our Lady of the Forsaken), with a lethargic and low-key event. Subdued worshipers calmly line the Plaza de la Virgen, offering whispered prayers and privately reflecting on their faith as their beloved icon passes quietly by. (Are you detecting any sarcasm, here? Because I’m laying it on pretty thick.)
The festivities for the Virgen de los Desamparados actually begin the day before, on Saturday evening, with fireworks in the Turia riverbed at midnight, followed by a huge dance in the Plaza de la Virgen. With hundreds of castanet-clicking couples in traditional costumes swirling about the plaza, this is a sight worth staying up for.
In this post we mostly highlight the fireworks and the mass dance but stay tuned for the full madness of the morning procession and yet another Mascleta in our next post.

Very cool! I love Valencia and always wanted to go to Las Fallas
Fallas is amazing .. our favorite festival. But they have so many other festival throughout the year. Our goal is to go to some of the small town summer festivals around. They're intense!
Have you been to the wine festival that's near La Tomatina the night before? I went years ago... It's incredible, and a million times better than Tomatina. Starts with a corrida in the bull ring and then everybody parades through town where water trucks full of wine will fill any container you give them. It basically turns into a waterfight with wine. I can't remember the name of the town or festival though...
It might have been Utiel or Requena ... I can't stand La Tomatina!!! They actually have one now twice a year. It's totally in the hands of the foreigners now. And I won't go near .. hate tomatoes .. hehe.
Yes! It was Requena. brilliant festival! Yeah Tomatina was awful when I went around 12 years ago
We never went .. we try to make it to the wine festival this year. It has gotten so much worse now. La Tomatina is almost a shame. It has nothing to do with Spanish culture anymore :(
Your post is very good!
