Perlan2 Stratospheric Glider Development for FlightGear

in #utopian-io7 years ago (edited)

Introduction

FlightGear (http://www.flightgear.org) is an open source flight simulator that is even used in flight schools to train basic maneuvers, radio communication and navigation tasks. It is available for windows, mac and linux.

In this article I want to introduce my development of the Perlan2, a Stratospheric Glider based on the original aircraft from http://www.perlanproject.org/.

Features

1:1 Model in many parts modified, the original 3d-model I got from the perlanproject member Carlos Reynoso.

Aero-tow action for multiplayer programmed with an AI-towing aircraft. It will tow the glider to 10000 ft in 27 minutes, 60 waypoints are used.

Drag parachute designed and implemented, for descending from high altitudes.

fgfs-screen-224ut.png

Riding on the wave lift in 30000 ft in Patagonia.

Full instrumentation, all animations in multiplayer mode and real flight characteristics are some more features. I build this in 3 month work with a private dropbox link for testing and have released it today.

Project

This glider will ride on the wave lift to 90000 ft without engine. Besides ridge lift and thermals the wave lift is considered as utilizable for commercial flights, this project will improve this knowledge and is also used for measure details in the stratosphere.

  • Technology Stack
I used 3D modelling with Blender, animations and all basics in FlightGear specific xml-files, some programming in nasal language.

  • Roadmap
Implementing flexing wings and a better wave lift model.

  • How to contribute?
Pull request to my github repository or direct contact via Mumble FlightGear Chat.

Thank you for posting this!!!
I'm a glider pilot and I've been working with Airbus for a few months now, but I had no idea about the Perlan2 project. You made it a better day for me! I will be following the evolution of this project and your work as well.
Good luck!

Wow, I am happy to hear that!
I offer you a free flight with it, just look my infos for it up and join us, it would be a great peasure for me!

Wel.done and execellent work sir...
Cheers~~~

though i don't have much exposure on avaiation or airplane, still your post is so informative whre we can learn new things. Thanks for sharing this pilot @schamangerbert 👏👍 dear @sunnylife introduce you to me 😊❤️❤️❤️

yeah you got to fly with us soon!!

@schamangerbert Such a great article & nice photography
##Upvote/Resteem### Wow Jerry that was a lot of work, thank you!
I will check them out when I get home this evening and can sit down and read.

your hard working for three months are now come in live, your work is model role for aviation students, this glider fly its best.

That's a very nice post and it's too educative.. Thanks and expecting more from you

wow, great game design,
your GitHub repositories list very nine, i visit your github link, very nice, your all git project,

Excellent work as always! The glider will lift to 90000 feet! People won’t be able to breathe! Do you supply oxygen masks as well?!

Cheers.

Wow! excellent design! pure oxygen by rebreather system! Genius!

Human brains are capable of anything!

your post too educative . i like your post
