How to use GPG to encrypt and decrypt messages (video tutorial)

in #utopian-io7 years ago (edited)

This is a tutorial video that explains how to use GPG on Windows to encrypt and decrypt messages.

In short, here are the steps taken in the video:

  1. Download GPG4Win from https://www.gpg4win.org/.
  2. Install the program and tick the box that says 'GPA'.
  3. Generate a key pair, make a back-up file, and create a passphrase.
  4. To encrypt a message, first receive the other person's key and click 'Import' in GPA.
  5. Open Clipboard and write the message.
  6. Click 'Encrypt', select the other person's public key, and tick the box that says 'Sign' and select your own private key to sign it.
  7. Enter your passphrase to confirm.
  8. Send the encrypted message via any messaging system.

To receive messages from other people:

You'll need to separate your public and private keys.

  1. Open your back-up file with Notepad (or another text editing program).
  2. Select your public key and copy it into a new text file.
  3. Save the new text file as your public key and send it to someone else.

Tip: To separate your keys, you can also right-click on your key pair in GPA and copy it to make a new public key file.

To decrypt encrypted messages:

  1. Paste the encrypted message into GPA's clipboard.
  2. Click 'Decrypt' and enter your passphrase.
  3. Read the message.

That's all folks!

This is the kind of stuff we need more of.

We're playing around with cryptography on the Gold and Black discord server. Let me know if you want to join :) Someone also created a discord server solely dedicated to learn about cryptography.

Would you like me to make some more tutorial videos? I feel like this kind of technology might come in handy with the censorship these days.

The more the merrier. I would like to see as much of this kind of stuff as possible and I will support it as best I can. I'm going to be doing some curating of how-to content on personal privacy on my site some time soon and I will use this in the article. Well done.

Maybe you could put this on dtube and/ or LBRY? LBRY, at least can give you a longer tail on passive income. Just a thought.

Good to know, and thanks for featuring me! I will look for more stuff like this and make tutorial videos for them.

Yeah I was planning to upload it to DTube as well, but I'm still waiting for Utopian to approve this video as original content before I do that. I have uploaded the video to BitChute though.

Very interesting, thanks!
