All Steemit Alternative Interfaces Are a UX Nightmare. Steem Needs a URL Protocol HandlersteemCreated with Sketch.

in #utopian-io8 years ago (edited)

Hi all,

This is my first contribution to Utopian and I already feel obliged to start with a compulsory apology for that title. But it is a thing close to heart.

For a new project I am working, which will hopefully contribute to increase Steem(it)'s visibility and reach, I have currently tested many of the Steemit alternatives and I can come to only one conclusion. Without wanting to take away any credit of how awesome many of the options available to us are. Busy.org rocks (the new design is interesting), Steemiz is absolutely refreshing, and Steemitstage... well let's call that the good ole' home in times of poor site performance. Other alternatives also deserve all possible credit, but they re not why this post. All interfaces only suffer from this problem.

So what conclusion did I come to? All alternative interfaces are a UX nightmare.

That not to their fault though, and even posting this under condenser doesn't necessarily feel correct as it may be that the Steem blockchain itself requires this feature.

design_vs_user-experience.jpg

What is the Problem?

Each time I'm navigating the blockchain's content on an alternative interface I run into internal article links, links which most often take me to Steemit. The Mother of All...

Being a good netizen, I do click links, yes. And I read referred content. But I do not want to be taken away from the interface I am using. Even less so if I happen to be logged into two different accounts.

A Possible Solution

While the most obvious solution, and laziest one at that, would be to strip internal links of the TLD and turn each absolute internal link into a relative link, this doesn't feel correct, no matter how much I think of it.

Can The Solution Be Improved?

A simple solution as above conversion from absolute to relative links may be may be the chosen solution and probably the most obvious solution. But as platforms continue to launch, we all can think of issues with relative links. What with feedreaders? What if you happen to be reading awesome articles via Instapaper or Pocket?

Would a genuine URL protocol handler which each Steembased app can identify with be the more wise [sic] solution. This would allow each interface to keep Steem blockchain based links internally and let its users experience a much more enjoyable, much more consistent experience.

If no (registered) app identifies to serve the content, the blockchain would serve the (by content creator) originally posted absolute link.

(Mixed) Documentation:
Final Observation

Tags and usernames are ideal examples of how things could be solved and how we could possibly also write links in a near future.

I'm pretty sure many of us have experienced this problem already and hope this post can inspire at the very least a debate around the topic. While I think the solution is one to be implemented on the blockchain itself, I'm leaving this under condenser because Steemit is the main culprit of this UX nightmare.

I could have added Facepalm images to this post, or Merida .gifs, but other than satisfying Utopian's upvote bot, I do not think they would add value to this post. ;)
Edit: The poorly thought out UX explanaining image posted above seems rather appropriate actually. Source: UX lovers on social media.

Hi @fknmayhem,
Congrats! Your post has been featured in The Daily Qurator #48. I hope you like it!

Your Quality Curator,
Dr. TLK :D

I actually suggested this idea myself before utopian existed: https://steemit.com/steem/@jefpatat/can-steem-it-survive-its-problems

Other interfaces could as well strip the steemit.com part and replace it. This is not an idea for condenser but for the blockchain or an alternative interface. Can you change the project?

Emphasis mine.

Considering that Steemit is an app in itself, the project should be the Steem blockchain then since it seems most appropriate long-term solution? I can live with that. I think I make that clear in my post.

https://github.com/steemit/steem then, any consensus on that as best location for this idea/request?

And glad to see I'm not the only one experiencing this as an issue. :)

I agree to that one. It would be the best place to solve the issue I think.

Please make the change as suggested and let me know in a reply so I can approve your entry.

Apologies, I didn't know you are a mod. I thought you may have commented from another interface. Utopian needs an identifier (tag/badge/label) for that.

Done. :)

Good idea. Thanks. I will discuss that in the team.

Sorry I am not familiar with utopian - are you guys on another UI/forum?

Hey @ecosaint,

Utopian.io is a new vertical built on the Steem blockchain which aims at midterm revolutionising open source software by rewarding contributors, bug reporters, and even promoters.

Currently, it is an interface to Steem with many advanced features. You can find out more at Utopian.io or by following its founder @elear.

If you're into software or internet tech, keep an eye on it as Utopian may be the most disruptive thing in tech [especially to Github] since... Github.

Very cool! I'm checking it out right now!

I went to the site https://join.utopian.io/

I choose to sign in thru Steemit, & all it did was take me to the Steemit index LOL

What am I doing wrong?

I am not a techie by any stretch, but I'm not a novice to sites, applications, computers, etc. & I happen to be very good at finding bugs & telling sites when there's bugs.

If the site pisses me off enough I start blogging about ALL their bugs b/c if it's a site that charges money & they go overseas for their programmers, I get really PISSED off that they hire people who don't know WTF they are doing LOL

Sorry, as a UX designer I have to firstly make a comment about the 'desire path' concept/image that you have used in that we shouldn't look at the problem of creating what is the 'best' solution because there probably isn't one. You can read more about the fallacy of the 'desire path' from someone who designs paths here: https://medium.com/@VicTheSlowMo/whats-missing-from-that-ux-path-analogy-6cf1c68ea049

I think any applications build on top of the blockchain introduces new behaviours and interactions, and so I have tried to spend some time using Steemit and Busy.org myself and see how we can improve the user experience. Any social media platform that tries to cater for a very diverse audience will unfortunately have to create an established path, and then observe the many number of 'desire paths' created by different types of users. But it is an interesting challenge that I hope other UX designers who are also Steemians will try and solve by engaging more users here and understanding their needs.

Personally I think being able to visually navigate the different posts/comments/threads would be a fantastic way to create an engaging interface (and also to keep the display on one window/tab), so I think you have inspired me to work on some design concepts to share with people here and promote more discussions.

Known. Hence why the elaboration with the poorly thought out UX explaning image at the bottom of the post.

I can help getting started with a simple solution

First of all: we need a list of the major Steem front sites: steemit.com, busy.org, you name it.

Then, you can use a "scraper" that finds the links, tests them, and if doesn't work, substitute the front site's name to others.

Of course, the ideal would be having something like steem://@katamori/feed not unlike LBRY does in their own client app, but I'm not sure if that's possible for browsers.

But even then, replacement is easy: https://www.steemit.com/@katamori/feed to steem://@katamori/feed, you name it.

Hey @fknmayhem I am @utopian-io. I have just super-voted you at 35% Power!

-Good amount of information. Thank you!
-A very informative contribution. Good job!
-This is your first accepted contribution here in Utopian. Welcome!
Up-vote this comment to grow my power and help Open Source contributions like this one.

And BTW, don't try to trick the bot, you'll loose in the end ;-)

I know the Prisonner's Dilemma, I don't look for short term gains. In fact, gains do not interest me at all. Unless the gain obtained is improved UX.

Yet a post without any photo is an eyesore on most interfaces. ;)

Well done! I have experienced this but hadn't even begun to think about the solution - other than recommending that people can switch the root domains manually.

You have my vote for president of Steemit if you can figure this out!
