Scaling the Utopian Bot : A Look Into Graphics - Blockchain Business Intelligence by eastmael

in #utopian-io7 years ago

This is the third installment for a proposed change in the Utopian bot in due consideration of its direction. This is a multi-post project with the aim of analyzing each of the Utopian categories to get their voting range and compare these values with existing services. Whether to use one bot per category or one account per project, project owners can use values gathered in these analyses in deciding how much to reward contributions to their projects.

In the previous analysis, we looked into developments. We skipped tutorials due to a perceived difficulty in getting quotations for such services. In this analysis, this author looked into graphics.

So far, here were the sections covered:

  1. Scaling the Utopian Bot - The Suggestion
  2. A Look Into Translations
  3. A Look Into Developments
  4. A Look Into Graphics - this contribution

Outline

  1. Scope of Analysis
  2. Utopian Growth Check
  3. Total Rewards Per Category
  4. A Look Into Graphics
  5. Comparing with Existing Services
  6. Total Required Steem Power
  7. Conclusion

1. Scope of Analysis

  • Contributions were acquired on Dec. 18, 2017 0020H UTC.
  • Data extracted was from 2017-09-28 1539H UTC to 2017-12-17 2341H UTC.
  • Down-votes were excluded.
  • Up-votes on comments were excluded.

2. Utopian Growth Check

image.png

As predicted in the previous analysis, contributions have surpassed the value for November.

The contributions (still 107 contributions behind November) is the number of contributions per month. Since we're still in mid-December, we can expect this number to increase.

image.png

However, this author was not expecting it to surpass its values for authors and projects this soon.

To be consistent with previous analyses, let's look at this by day.

image.png

It has voted for 223 contributions on the previous round.

3. Total Rewards Per Category

image.png

An interesting development - graphics surpassed tutorials and development to become the second most rewarded category. It's been rewarded more than $22K. This got undetected in this author's radar.

4. A Look Into Graphics

image.png

The maximum total rewards it had given was on December 16 with around $1850.

Contributions in this category were given an average of $31 per contribution, with a minimum vote of $2 and a maximum of $141.

Again, which graphics deserve $2 and which deserve $141?

These were the dates it had given these rewards:

  • Minimum: October 23
  • Maximum: November 11
$2
$141

Let's look at the frequency of votes per reward value.

image.png

In line with its average, most of the time, it rewards its contributions by $30.

Let's consider only the top 5 vote rewards for the Utopian-graphics bot's SP:

image.png

The maximum reward in this table is $80. But it has only given this 6 times. To be consistent with the previous analyses, this author will choose the maximum ($80) from this table. Using steemnow's upvote calculator, the SP that will give us this vote value is around 450K SP.

5. Comparing with Existing Services

This author searched for graphics designers rates and found this source:

$20 to $150 an hour, with an average rate around $45 per hour. However, designers don’t always bill hourly; it’s also common for a designer to set a fixed price for the work, based on their understanding of your project requirements.

This author also looked at other sources:

Some freelance graphic designers charge more than $300 an hour (although $75 to $150 an hour is much more common, and there are those, at the low end, that charge $25 to $50 an hour)

And how much a logo design costs:

One should expect a simple logo design to cost approximately $200.

6. Required Steem Power

So far, these were the SPs identified to be allocated to the different bots:

BotProposed SP DelegationVote Value
Translation300K$50
Development400K$70
Graphics450K$80
Total1.15M$200

7. Conclusion

This analysis aimed to identify the vote value of a theoretical Utopian Graphics bot. We've identified that most graphics contributions are rewarded $30. We've also identified that graphics designers usually charge an average of $45 an hour, with logo projects starting from $200.

For the bot to be able to up-vote with a $80 to at least cover for the hourly rate, the bot needs a delegation of around 450K SP.

Thank you for the contribution. It has been approved.

@eastmael. I am enjoying this analysis work towards the Utopian bot.

May I suggest that future categories could be evaluated like this in a single post? Your comments are very welcome.

Thanks

Thank you for the suggestion Asher. This is noted.

Nice work @eastmael. Waiting for the analysis one!

I think on graphics there was maybe a catch up with the one of the last voting rounds. I don't know why sometimes posts are approved but not upvoted (I thought that was no longer the way the utopian bot worked) but I think that happened with a lot of graphics posts.

Thank you for the input @miniature-tiger.

You just gave me an idea here. It's going to take work, but I think I can pull it off.

This was the chart that really caught my eye when I was doing this:

These three categories are on the rise: translations, tutorials, graphics.

I look forward to seeing what you come up with!

I think translations will just keep rising. It's the one that's most accessible. I suspect there'll be some change to rewards, either to remove the minimum or an overall haircut again.

True. I did try translating before but just figured it's not my thing. Lol.

I suspect there'll be some change to rewards, either to remove the minimum or an overall haircut again.

Yup, I did see a post from @stoodkev about that. These things need tweaking and it may take time until an optimum setting is reached.

One thing that comes to mind is from a suggestion (from @stoodkev's post too, I think) is for moderators to do the manual checking and rating of contributions.

I like the rating idea. It will be very subjective though so no doubt cause for issues which the mods will have to deal with. There should probably be an accompanying table which explains what is expected for each level of rating, which may differ by category: complexity, originality, estimated effort, value added to open source etc. It will depend what the priorities are.
