In simple words, this project brings value to the open source community because it facilitates the creation of all sort of applications using JavaScript, and provides a lot of help and versatility to developers, so much so that well-known companies like Netflix, Paypal, and Uber (among many others) use Node for their online services.

Since Node.js is very easy to learn and it provides a lot of benefits for developers, there is a huge community of people involved with it, which is one of the reasons why this project is available to be translated into several languages (in crowdin, one of the best translation platforms in the web, this project is available to be translated into 33 different languages, Spanish being the one corresponding to this contribution), the ultimate goal in translating Node.js is to make it easier for developers from any country to start learning about this project in their own native language.

Contribution Specifications

  • Translation Overview

This is my #33 contribution to Node.js, right now the project is 30% completed, which means that we have an increase of 1% compared to when I posted my previous contribution. The folder I have been working is called CHANGELOG_V6.md, and right now it is 62% completed, this is an increase of 3% from my previous contribution, I have noticed that for every new contribution there is an increase of either 3% or 2%, so if calculate the average then each contribution should represent about 2.5% of all the text inside the folder.

This particular folder contains all of the changes for Node.js V6, these changes are usually related to small modifications that should be applied to internal Node’s elements. There are instructions to refactor tests, fixing typos, removing or adding checks, among many other instructions.

The entire folder is divided into several versions, and each of these versions is then divided into sections. In this particular contribution, the majority of the translated strings were from the commit section of the 6.8.0 version.

The commit section is always the most extensive one because that is where we can find all of the changes, sometimes these sections can have more than 100 strings, but other times (as mentioned in a recent contribution) they can also be very short with just 4 or 5 strings.

The strings of the commit sections always follow the same structure, first there is the link to the commit on GitHub, then the area related to this commit (build, benchmark and buffer are a few examples), then there is the instruction for the change which is always written in a very concise way, followed by the name of the person who proposed said change, and finally there is the link to the pull-request on Github.

When working on this contribution I was able to learn the following concepts:

Data Execution Prevention (DEP): as we all know, there is always the risk of suffering from viruses and malicious software that can harm our computer and the valuable data we have in them, what a DEP does, is to analyze every program and check if each of them is using the system memory in a proper way, and close those that are using protected memory because they shouldn’t be doing this in the first place, after DEP closes the program, it also triggers a notification to alert the user.

Hotfix: this is simply a code or patch that is released to fix a bug that might affect the functioning of the software. Since this term is usually used for software that is already deployed and running, when a developer is working on a hotfix he will surely look like this:

Smoke test: when a new software is being developed, it is necessary to apply several tests to make sure it is working as it should be, smoke tests are done to make sure the basic elements are working properly, so further and more specialized tests can be applied later on.
