I will aim to provide this report on a weekly basis, with a look at the previous weeks data and more historical data to compare and contrast.

This will allow contributors and employees of utopian.io to keep in touch with how the platform is progressing with regards to approval percentages and number of Contribution Types being submitted.

Assumptions

In this report, 'Approved' contributions have been voted on by @utopian-io.

'Rejected' contributions have not received a vote from @utopian-io.

1. Contributions Summary

For the week, 2nd - 8th February 2018 inclusive, the SteemSQL DataBase holds a total of 2558 potential contributions to utopian-io. This is a 46% DECREASE on the previous weeks' total which was 4722.

status.png

1285 of these contributions have been approved, 1462 (53%) less than the previous weeks' total of 2747.

The approval percentage of 50% is down 8% from last week.

The Contributions offered can be any one of the following types:

contribution types.png

This weeks data, split into Contribution types is shown in the pie chart below:

allconts.png

This week, the 'Ideas' category holds the largest percentage of contributions, taking over from 'Translations' which has held the majority since the 2nd week of December 2017.

'Translations' the second most popular contribution category, with 'Graphics' a new entry into 3rd.

2 Contributions by Type

In this section we take a look a few of the individual contribution types of interest.

A full list of contribution types is listed further below with associated figures and analysis.

Translations - Approvals / Rejections

This week, we can see a huge fall in the number of contributions for the 'Translations' category.

Looking back over the past 2 months using the chart below, we can see the sharp rise in 'Translation' contributions from December week 2, peaking in the first week of January.

The accepted contribution total then stayed above 1000 for 6 successive weeks before falling sharply this week with the totals being very close to the submission numbers back in December week 2.

image.png

This past week, Open Source 'Translation' contributions for 'Crowdin' have stopped being accepted and so perhaps this is a reason for the large decrease in contributions for this category.

Tutorials - Approvals / Rejections

This past week we have also seen a sharp decline in the number of contributions in the 'Tutorials' (and 'Video Tutorials') category. This can be seen in the chart below which looks at the past 6 weeks of data.

image.png

'Tutorial' contributions peaked in the 2nd week of January with accepted contributions being almost identical for the first two weeks of the year. Since then the numbers have fallen, but this week shows a large decrease which required further investigation.

As @utopian-io evolves, the category rules require constant tweeking in order to keep submissions up to a good level and this week, both Tutorial categories have been adjusted. A recent @utopian-io blog details the new rule changes, and perhaps the most significant for this category is:

Video Tutorials must be technical instructions that teach non-trivial aspects of an Open Source project.

When the rules are adjusted, it takes time for both the moderators and the contributors to the affected category to get used to the new format.

Enforcing a 'technical' aspect to each 'Tutorial' contribution could have swayed frequent contributors to the category away as they feel they don't have the knowledge required.

3. All contribution types

The following table shows all types and totals of contributions submitted, with their approval % in the end column.

image.png

For 3 weeks now, 'Development' has fared best of the busier contribution categories, reaching an approval rate higher than 4 out of every 5 contributions.

'Translations' and 'Analysis' performed reasonably well, but failed to reach the approval percentages of the previous week.

Yet again, the 'Blog' category continues to perform badly. This week only 5 contributions were approved from a total of 50 - a 10% approval rate. This figure has dipped even further from the 12.5% approval rate last week.

As stated last week, it seems that the guidelines for this category are unclear to contributors and may need adjusting.

4. Summary Analysis

As the weeks' pass and the data collected expands, it is possible to learn more about the developing trends in the utopian-io ecosystem.

This weeks contribution total is way down from the recent trend and presents the lowest numbers in the past two months.

image.png

In recent weeks I suggested that 5000 contributions would a tough contribution total to pass, and that an approval rate of 55-65% seemed likely in the near future.

image.png

This weeks numbers fall way short in contributions, and are off the mark with regards to the approval percentage.

Summary

This past week has been a tough week for contributors to utopian-io. The rule adjustments in the 'Translations', 'Tutorial', and 'Video-Tutorial' contribution categories have provided a sharp drop in submissions as contributors have shied away from these categories.

Previously, when the contribution rules have changed, other categories have quickly gained popularity, but in the past 7 days this has not happened to the extent we've seen in the past.

Previously I wrote:

Will we see a weekly contribution total of 5000+ next week?

The emphatic answer is 'No'!

Lets hope to see an improvement in contributions and an increase in the approval percentage over the coming weeks as the new rules are slowed adapted to.

5. Tools used to gather this data and compile report

The data is sourced from SteemSQL - A publicly available SQL database with all the blockchain data held within.

The SQL queries to extra to the data have been produced in both SQL Server Personal Edition and LINQPAD 5. Some of the code used for these results can be found in an earlier contribution.

The charts used to present the data were produced using MS Excel.

This data was compiled on the 10th February 2018 at 7:00 pm (UCT)

Thank you for the contribution. It has been approved.

Wow, seems like the new rules for translations and tutorials pulled the contribution rates pretty low! I'm surprised by the development approval rate - seems like the developers know pretty well what is suitable for utopian!

Yep!

Translations and tutorials smashed!

And Development has been doing really well for a while, they know the drill 😁

Cheers!

The reduction in translation numbers has been enormous. 2053 last week down to 521 this week.

The impact on the payouts in other categories has also been huge from this. Some of the Utopian upvote percentages look like they have been doubled.

Yeah I had a large vote 4/5 days ago, hoping the last two are processed before things pick up again!

judging from week 5 January and week 1 February, from 58.2% to 50.2%, I guess the drop was due to the rule adjustments. I personally have a friend who submitted a post on visibility and it wasn't approved.

But all the same, the 8% decline isn't much of a decline. we hope to adjust to the rules and witness increase in the coming weeks.

Thanks for sharing @abh12345

8% is reasonable, and at least it stated about 50% approval - just!

Hey I have a question that doesn't relate to your blog post but im not sure of any other way to get in contact with you.

I noticed you and @fulltimegeek try to get people out of the habit of voting on their own post, is there a reason why you shouldnt vote on your own post?

The main reason would be that this vote can be used for someone else. 2/3rd of my Steem power is delegated to me, and over half of it for free (from @fulltimegeek), I should be using most of it on others I think. What are your thoughts?

I completely agree. I actually done a lot of research on self voting and when and if it is acceptable. I actually made a vlog about it today and mentioned you and @fulltimegeek in the vlog and the SOG. I feel as a minnow, or plankton with such little bandwidth and voting power we should spend it wisely, and sometimes that means it would be best for us to give that vote away to someone that truly deserves it rather than ourselves.

Oh I shall have a look.

Yes when you start out, your vote is not of much financial benefit to yourself and I think best used on other posts and the best comments your own posts receive.

Time to go and see what you have to say...... :)

Awesome! You'll see it on my personal account @lifewithdanny I never realized that I was on this account when I replied :)

I've not been awake long and it took me a little time to understand what was going on!

ahahah yeah I can see why it can get confusing! It gets confusing for myself, as you seen.

Hey @abh12345 I am @utopian-io. I have just upvoted you!

It seems to me or utopian-io begins to lose its popularity. Activity this week fell sharply.

Мне кажется или utopian-io начинает терять свою популярность. Активность на этой недели резко упала.

Cutting down on accepted project and tweaking rules to reduce cheating has had a large effect!

Its quite a comprehensive and well explaining data about users of @utopian-io. I really appreciate the developers and contributors. Good work.

Thank you very much!
