I will aim to provide this report on a weekly basis, with a look at the previous weeks data and more historical data to compare and contrast.
This will allow contributors and employees of utopian.io to keep in touch with how the platform is progressing with regards to approval percentages and number of Contribution Types being submitted.
Assumptions
In this report, 'Approved' contributions have been voted on by @utopian-io.
'Rejected' contributions have not received a vote from @utopian-io.
1. Contributions Summary
For the week, 26th Jan - 1st Feb 2018 inclusive, the SteemSQL DataBase holds a total of 4722 potential contributions to utopian-io. This is a 6% increase on the previous weeks' total which was 4491.
2747 of these contributions have been approved, just 27 fewer than the previous weeks' total of 2774.
The approval percentage of 58% is down 4% from last week.
The Contributions offered can be any one of the following types:
This weeks data, split into Contribution types is shown in the pie chart below:
This week, the 'Translations' category still holds the largest percentage of contributions at 43% - The same percentage as last week. 'Ideas' keeps 2nd place, with 'Tutorials' still in 3rd.
2 Contributions by Type
In this section we take a look a few of the individual contribution types of interest.
A full list of contribution types is listed further below with associated figures and analysis.
Analysis- Approvals / Rejections
One category, yet to be featured is 'Analysis'. This category is one of the lesser contributed categories, but shows a very stable number of contributions and approval rates.
The above chart shows that the minimum number of contributions in January was 14, and the maximum was 21 for the 5 weeks analysed in January.
The approval percentage over these 5 weeks only varied 10%, between a 68% and 78% approval rate.
I think there is certainly scope for an increase in contributions for this category, but perhaps it is one of the more 'skilled' categories to contribute to at utopian-io.
Suggestions - Approvals / Rejections
Last week we focused 'Suggestion' category, which had shown excellent growth in January as far as the number of contributions.
We can see that although there has been another increase in the number of contributions, there were fewer approvals this week - a 10% fall.
Perhaps the 'Suggestions' category is reaching saturation levels with regards to the number of Open Source applications to provide ideas for.
3. All contribution types
The following table shows all types and totals of contributions submitted, with their approval % in the end column.
As was the case last week, 'Development' fared best of the busier contribution categories. However, even this category failed to reach an approval rate of 3/4 contributions.
Considering a total of 2053 contributions for the 'Translations' category, an approval rate of 70% is worthy of note. The rule changes and requirement to apply to be able to submit to this category is perhaps the key for this high %.
Again, the 'Blog' category continues to perform badly. This week only 11 contributions were approved from a total of 88 - a 12.5% approval rate. Perhaps the guidelines for this category require further clarification / modification?
4. Summary Analysis
As the weeks' pass and the data collected expands, it is possible to learn more about the developing trends in the utopian-io ecosystem.
This weeks contribution total is close to the numbers reached at the start of January follow a dip in the middle week of the month.
_ | DEC 3 | DEC 4 | JAN 1 | JAN 2 | JAN 3 | JAN 4 | JAN 5 |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Total | 2775 | 3854 | 4676 | 4845 | 3511 | 4491 | 4722 |
App'd | 1876 | 2690 | 2976 | 2522 | 2110 | 2774 | 2747 |
Previously I wrote:
I still think that the total number of contributions is unlikely to rise above 5000 in the near future, and believe that a 55-65% approval rate will be the average over the coming months.
This weeks numbers again suggest that this estimate is accurate for the time being.
Summary
As a utopian-io contributor, I am happy to see the number of contributions rise again this week. A fair number of categories reached a fair approval rate of 50-60%, but no category stood out this week as far as approval percentage is concerned.
Will we see a weekly contribution total of 5000+ next week? Find out in a few days time!
5. Tools used to gather this data and compile report
The data is sourced from SteemSQL - A publicly available SQL database with all the blockchain data held within.
The SQL queries to extra to the data have been produced in both SQL Server Personal Edition and LINQPAD 5. Some of the code used for these results can be found in an earlier contribution.
The charts used to present the data were produced using MS Excel.
This data was compiled on the 6th February 2018 at 2:00 pm (UCT)

You must use https://utopian.io/
Then the tag will be added automatically, and you will see the 'categories' to choose from, and then the rules :)

I'd love to see what the breakdown is for the different projects, but that would be a much more complex analysis for sure. It is hard to get a read on whether there is much activity without getting a feel for whether it is spread across all projects or driven by specific/major projects.
Yes I'd like to combine more projects/accounts in future, when they have a few more months behind them to analyse. Cheers!
And thanks for the RS!
