So where does the value for Steem or bitcoin come from? What is the point of all this?

in #ungrip7 years ago

When I talk about steem to people, they look at me like I have two heads.  How can a string of zeros and ones have value?  Where does the 'money' come from within the cryptocurrencies?  I wrote about money about a month ago and it is important to be familiar with the terminology as this topic has many different forms of money & currencies.

My Oxford dictionary defines value in this context as:

The relative status of a thing, or the estimate in which it is held, according to its real or supposed worth, usefulness, or importance.

Throughout history, we have used shells, beads, stones, tally sticks, metals, paper and even electrons to represent value.  Some are defined as real money, paper money and even fiat currency.  Now we have a new one called cryptocurrency which is essentially a string of characters encrypted using algorithms to ensure that they are not stolen or duplicated.  Each of these different forms had value at one point or another.

The value comes not from the item itself but from our impression or evaluation of its worth, usefulness or importance.  With value represented by physical objects like gold or silver, the value is found in the amount of work it took to find and then mine those metals, making them precious in the eyes of many.  It took a LOT of work to get them info a form that we could use as 'real money'.  They still have value because they would still work as money even when the power goes out.

With fiat currency, the value was created when the state dictated that the only way to pay taxes was with their currency.  Even though the currency is debt based and they can print as much as they want, people were forced through coercion to accept the debt based fiat currency.  Inflation and usury has been used for thousands of years to steal from people and fiat currency made that process even easier.  That is why the implied wealth of the world is in the hands of a few and many go hungry, homeless, etc.  Poverty continues due to the concepts and principles established by the king under coercion and force.  It is these principles that I have outlined in detail throughout my blog.

With cryptocurrencies, the value is found in the amount of work done just as work was required to get the gold and silver.  With bitcoins the work is done by rows and rows of computers, chewing on computer algorithms to find new tokens out of a limited pool.  This ensures that no one individual or central authority can print more, devaluing the currency as we witness with fiat currency.

The thing I like about Steem is that the work is done by humans in their artful expression.  It is a renaissance of sorts as it is helping us get out of the dark ages of fiat currency, coercion and violence.  We love to create and there is value in that creation.  We have always valued music, art, meaningful writings, sharing of ideas, concepts, freedom and peaceful ways of life.  All those have value to us because they are useful, important and worth while to our way of life.  Much like food, clothing, shelter, water and air!

So when we find something that is worth while to us, we vote on it to reflect the value we have in that expression.  The currency is created by us voting when we see value and importance.  That vote rewards the artist and the curator as both are important.  If there is nobody to enjoy or see value in the art form, then the value is limited to the artist.  But when the art form is seen and enjoyed by many, then true value is created.  That is why it is so important to vote, even if your vote is only worth a penny.  Vote!

The beautiful thing about this model is that the value is created with tangible, useful information or ideas, rather than debt, promissory notes or I.O.U.'s.  The algorithms ensure that the currency does not get watered down which would cause inflation and covertly steel value from the participants.

In the end, every currency in the history of the world needed people to accept them and find value in them.  As fiat currencies struggle with the debt load and the covert theft of value as a result of the greed of the elite, people struggle with the burden of debt.  It is the debt that will entice people to find another alternative.  Steem is not a debt based currency from what I've found.  Its value is created by the very individuals involved with the currency and by those who value the creative genius of the individuals who choose to create art forms and meaningful content.

It is important that we acknowledge that our contributions and creative genius is what brings value to this currency.  The only reason people value the plastic fiat Canadian, US or European currencies is because the majority of people accept them for the basic necessities of life through coercion and force.  That is changing and we see it as people are flooding over to the cryptocurrencies.

But what happens when people can provide for their basic necessities of life?  Their dependency on the currency falls significantly.  Like ourselves, our dependency dropped from about $6000 per month 11 years ago to about $750 per month.  That is a significant drop.  Our goal is to get it down to zero.  That is proving difficult without us completely withdrawing and disappearing in the bush.

That won't serve us or anybody else, so we choose to stay connected so that we can still interact with people like yourselves.  Being on a platform that creates value by the work of individuals rather than being dictated by a centralized authority removes the control from that authority and puts it back into the hands of the individual where it belongs.

That, in my opinion, is what give cryptocurrencies their value which multiplies the value of the art by 10 fold.  Make no mistake, the greatest value still rests in having a relationship with Mother Earth and being independent so that we can take care of our own needs.  That will always be the top priority and duty of each individual.   Cryptocurrencies are still dependent on electricity, computer hardware, telecommunications, developers and participants.  There are some vulnerabilities that are being worked on.  But we should never lose site of the physical relationships and use the tools like Cryptocurrencies to help get our independence established so that we can then venture into inter-independent relationships.  That has the GREATEST value.  Life here is ALL about relationships!  Money is only a tool and we should never loose sight of that fact.  Greed can grip us here as well.

I choose to remain focused on my relationships and I'll let the cryptocurrency take care of itself and use it to help others as the vast majority of my needs are already met.  My goal is to help people become independent from the violent, coercive systems so that we can find peace and prosperity with all our relationships!

Yes, you're right. my brother @wwf
Historically. People who changed history and affected the humanity and developed the world they used their ideas not their money
There is no person in human history who has added something to the world using his money....
But there's a lot adding something to the world using their ideas....
Ideas of Newton, Einstein, Aaristo and......... is the one who developed this world.
And the money has caused a lot of wars.

that's what happens now...... The Arabian Gulf people have a lot of money. But they use it to spread wars and propagate hatred in the world.
and the Japanese live in a very small island, but they are creative in inventing and developing this world.

A person who has ideas can to developed the world
A person who has money cannot developed the world.

All of this makes me make sure that Steem will succeed in the future.
Because it depends on ideas, not money.

I very much agree with your argument and I sympathize with your experience in trying to discuss crypto with newbies, they usually look at me with glassy eyes and say no thanks.

I think, they do not grasp where value comes from, and more broadly why "money" is worth anything.

Yesterday I was talking to a friend about Steemit and explaining how the system pays us for our content, and he was like where does the money come from, and to his credit he got that part, but then there was this "system-failure" moment.

I mentioned the platform is growing and its better than Youtube, Reddit, etc, and he was like soon they will start advertising, and then it will be just the same as the rest... I had to swing back to the beginning of the conversation, there is no "they", Steemit is a decentralized app, meaning that "we" the content creators, curators and members of the community run where it goes. So then he felt that it would never grow because big companies need ad revenue to grow... that to me was the cherry on the cake, I couldn't believe my ears! Of course that's not true, look at Wiki, or Bitcoin, or Steemit. These projects grow because people love them and put time into them, just as you were saying in your article.

It is the time we put into something that makes a thing worth something, really worth something. This is why fiat ultimately goes to zero because there is nothing behind it, just paper and a printing press, copy & pasting an image.

It is hard for people to comprehend that there is no 'company'. There are companies that are using the blockchain and doing business on it, but the blockchain is open source. I think I shall write a post about that as well! thank you for the wonderful response. I value conversations like this very much.

Wow... This was really indepth. We run the blockchain, there is no' they'. We decide where this leads to tomorrow.

"Make no mistake, the greatest value still rests in having a relationship with Mother Earth and being independent so that we can take care of our own needs. That will always be the top priority and duty of each individual."

Thank you for this explanation and your view❤ this helped me quite a bit

I'm glad to hear this.... Yes we all agree with you.... @karenfoster
. I am a teacher and today I was trying to teach my students to respect the opinion of others..... In order to reduce hatred and wars in the world
.......... in the end I asked them:" how can we stop the wars in the world?"
I was expecting them to be answered: respect for the opinion of others

But a schoolgirl said to me:" we stop wars when the whole world becomes one country."

................. I could not continue to discuss with her because the time had ended
I think about her answer so much
she gave a smart and simple answer...........

** here in Steemit we all live in one country...**
But can we actually achieve this in the reality ?
** it is very difficult..... But we must not lose hope.**

That part struck me as well, and made me think of how cool it is that steemit is helping us have even more of a relationship with the earth, as people (like us homesteaders) share their experiences with our gardens and animals etc and knowledge of plants as medicines and traditional cooking etc with eachother. This post also had me thinking about my desire to go completely off grid and into the bush, and how WWF said "it wouldn't serve us or anyone" which makes so much sense... Being able to share with others how we're becoming more self sufficient, so that they can as well, is better than doing it alone just for ourselves. Does this rambling comment make any sense to anyone other than myself? Haha

Yes. Makes sense to me ❤ A self sufficient community for support to be more off the grid?

Yes <3 connecting on here to be able to disconnect from the mainstream.

Makes 1000% sense to me Amy :) Great comment!

Thanks for a really enjoyable and educational post. I am still finding my way round this new platform. So exploring a ltlle here and there helped by my friend @lyndsaybowes. Shall be keeping an eye on your posts and reading some more that you have already posted. Cheers

Yay for Lydsay! I'm here because of her too. Great teacher :)

Loves ya Amy!

Great to see you here @andyjem!!

i wrote about something similar yesterday i think. at this time of year as well caught up in the gradually GREEN views of things going up we have to respect one another and reach out a hand of friendship to others around us and bring them up too.

Well @wwf

You make a good point and lift some concerns we all have.

Taking Bitcoin as an example, it is heavilly overpriced in my opinion. Bitcoin is being used for something it isn't made to do. Bitcoin can't be a store of value, it was meant to be transacted.

However now we see the technical limitations as transaction prices go through the roof with all of the buzz around it.

It is beggining to lose grounds when facing the altcoins that compete with it.

It is therefore my opinion that Bitcoin will have its price falling fairly soon, unless the marketing people continue this endless shower of praise.

It is always important to ask - where does the value come from - and know if the assets really do bring value at all.

Nice post.

I don't think I have enough knowledge to even comment on what is happening to bitcoin. My gut tells me that people are fleeing the fiat currencies and like you said, using it for a storage of value rather than a tool for exchange. That in itself brings value to bitcoin. When the need for storage is over, that may be the time when it starts to drop. That or a catastrophic failure in the infrastructure of the cryptocurrency. I don't know enough about it to comment further. The value of fiat currencies are, in my opinion, deteriorating as a result of the exposed greed of bankers and the violence of the state. People are waking up to their abusive relationships and working to remedy the problems now. That will have an impact on any currencies that only exist as a result of coercion and force. Some of my friends here even speculate that the fiat currencies won't crash as the timely transition between the two take place. Time will tell. I think the analysis was interesting, but I will lean on my work living on the land rather than depending on the complex systems that the corporate / government empires have built.

And you do well... nature never depreciates... you know, unless they screw that too.

As a steward, I work hard to bring awareness so that those who do 'screw it up' are confronted so that we can change our views and relationships to bring prosperity for all, not just the rich few. But that shift is going to be uncomfortable for most. My message has not been a popular one over the last decade or more.

I quote this often:

Yup. Thank you!!!

I thought it is only here in Uganda is where people do not completely understand crypto!

When I talk about steem to people, they look at me like I have two heads.

It is really hard work to explain to a naive ordinary person that fiat is considered valuable because the government dictated so!

I will start using this explanation below to explain the value in Steemit, thanks for this explanation.

Vote!

I am grateful you found VALUE in my post! <3

It is really valuable and easy to explain to a newbie of the value in Steem

I hope that I will become independent with the help of Steemit, at least enough to buy me dirt and seeds and get me through the winter! I love the value of it, I am basically an advocate to everyone I meet about Steemit. I rant and rave about it even more then bulk barn lol.

Perfect explanation!Though there are many people like me in my country who are against this centralized system but somehow are forced not to go for a decentralized one. Our government has declared the trading of crypto illegal and put certain restrictions. However, hopes are high and soon all the governments will have to accept that this is the ultimate solution for all the economic problems (If unseen powers want this to happen)

The people have the greatest power and influence, despite the centralized authority to convince them otherwise.

The system has ingrained in us the need to comply and use the fiat money to enslave us. It is difficult to break those bonds when you can't wrap your head around the concept of crypto currencies. Many people can not "see" the value in something created from algorithms. You are speaking a foreign language to them. It time. with patient teaching more and more people will come to realize that the system is broken and they can not depend on their old way of life.

I agree. Not all cryptocurrencies are created by algorithms though. This one, in fact is created by you and I interacting with one another, having meaningful dialogue and sharing information with has real, intrinsic and perhaps even physical, emotional, mental and spiritual value. That is worth something. The algorithm merely just records that interaction and puts a number on the exchange to reflect value. The vast majority of the time the value reflected is not the true value as our friendship and exchange is priceless. But at least it records something that we can then use as a token to trade with each other or with other people. The programs facilitate that transaction.
