Waiting for an Express to be Built. How'd They Get Left in That Spot?
My commute to work each morning is often a traffic nightmare but that will soon be a thing of the past once they finish the elevated highway.
As I was passing by this bottleneck point I noticed a couple workers seemingly stranded up on a pillar. Not sure sure how they got there or how long they expect to be there. I guess a crane dropped them off and they're job is to make sure it's level. They got a view that's for sure.
I don't know when they started this project since it's so far from the parts of Dalian that I am familiar with but if all goes in classic Chinese fashion it will probably be complete in another year or so. In just the few weeks that I have been passing this spot is has come a long way and has a long way to go.
I don't think there is anywhere in China that is not under heavy construction. They've not only caught up to their competition they are now surpassing them at a speed it won't be able to keep pace with.
Are you sure this is for a highway? Looks pretty narrow for that use. Maybe light rail? @solarguy
It could be a light rail, there already is one that heads out here they finished recently. I'll get some photos on Monday of the parts more finished. It all fits together like lego. It does seem a bit narrow now you say that but somehow it becomes a roadway.
Oh, gotcha. They probably have a prefabbed part that slots on top of this which has four lanes built into it. Much faster that way. How wide are these elevated highways in China usually?

Yeah - the rate of construction is disturbing in China, ghost cities etc. I've a hard time calling it 'progress'
When I saw your thumbnail image I thought it was a project going on near where I'm at in HK. There's also something about the 'light' in China, even though Dalian's a fair way away from HK.
@steemmeupscotty, China has done a lot of centrally planned "pre building" as it were in anticipation for millions of internal migrants who were supposed to leave the countryside for jobs in Urban areas. Many of them never showed up. But it's an interesting contrast to Western organization where when that happens housing prices go way up until a bubble bursts at some point and some people lose their shirts in the crash. Upsides and downsides to both scenarios I guess.
Yes, and now an attempt to fill some of these ghost cities is underway with 'coupons' being issued to those who've had their homes and livelihood requisitioned by the government. Cases like the 3 gorges dam, where over a million people were forced out of their homes, and the environmental damage to boot makes one shudder.
But on the flip side they've used that cheap electricity to create Bitcoin mining farms so win for crypto??? lol

They do build faster then things can be used it seems. I expect those ghost cities to eventually fill up with people and industries. I've been to HK it's got better traffic then Dalian in my experience.
True - HK has a great public transport system which alleviates much of the road traffic congestion. The ghost cities may fill up, true, but I just wished the fake Paris type ones would stop being built. But then, hey, China does do things 'differently' ;)
Yea Dalian has some very western areas, like complete replicas of Europe or USA.
I wrote them long ago. Here's the links. I can see why they do it. I mean for decades everything was Chairman Mao style architecture which is old. They needed something different and what is more different than these examples below.

Cool - I'll check out your posts - Yeah, it seems China has a fascination with recreating western architecture - even in Macau, an Eiffel Tower, and concrete Venetian waterways with signing men in gondolas :/
Haha this definitely wouldnt pass any safety and regulation laws back West. I read a little while back that China has poured more concrete in the past 10 years than the USA has poured total, for its whole existence as a country. That is a mind blowing stat. What part of China are you in?
I have heard that about China using more concrete then the USA. Im up near the N. Korean border in Dalian on the tip of the peninsula.

That could take years it the contractor has gone bust.
We have a flyover here which hit the problem and it took few more years.
The government has to re-appoint a new construction company.
These contractors don't go bust. Or should won't. Projects like this are closely monitored by the government ensuring money isn;t embezzled out of the country like it had been too often in the past, that is what led to projects to many not getting completed. It still happens but not as often. I trust this will get completed and used. As for the residential building going up everywhere, I'm not sure when they'll be competed and if so when people will move in.
I heard there are many ghost building even - built and not occupied.
Here in Singapore, our authorities are supposed to keep tab on the contractors but there are still cases of them going under.
Yea, I'm sure Singapore as similar rules for constructing large residential buildings as in Canada. One of those rules are, in Canada, a building can not begin construction until 30% of the future units are already pre-sold. In China I am told they also have rules like this but the problem here is the contractors take the $10's of millions in US value and the y literally steal it and move their family to another country and never come back. The countries they move to are often Canada, USA, UK and other western countries that won't give the money back to China or send the criminals back either.
Many of the Chinese I meet their ultimate goal is to make enough money to leave. Luckily most work for it, blood, sweat and tears.
The common people like us can just continue to work hard till we strike some lottery or get some good crypto. :-)
Here our private residential condos can pretty much start construction before anything sold but one of the more recent regulation have it that the developer who don't sell out before a few years get penalised.

They have a shortage of cranes, these guys thrown up there earlier, crane will come back at the end of the day to get them. Wonder where they go to the bathroom?
hmm. Where do they go to the toilette. I guess over the edge or hold it. Not much privacy though, lol.
They will reach the top by the huge buildings it's really amazing
