ULOG #13: Not Everyone Truly Lives

in #ulog6 years ago

One of my friends on Steemit recently made the decision to go full time on Steem and carve out a modest living for himself here because he believes in the platform. That is admirable in my mind, I’m not in a financial position myself to be able to do something like that but I hope to one day get to that point.

I have been full time freelancer for years now but not on Steem.

This got me thinking about life and about the people that I surround myself with. Some of them are incredibly spiritual, intuitive beings that radiate happiness and inner beauty. Others are negative, miserable, and work jobs they hate to pay for a lifestyle that doesn’t really make them at all happy.

Lately, I have felt myself becoming distant from those that are unhappy but refuse to make changes in their lives because it hurts me to see them not living their true purpose in life. I want so much for them, maybe more than they want for themselves.

Why Not Everyone Truly Lives

Many people have been brainwashed by the system that we grow up in to believe that they have to spend their entire lives working a job they hate in order to keep up with the Joneses.

You have to get good grades in school, get into a good college, take out a bunch of student loans, go out into the workforce and spend the rest of your life paying off the student loans. Retirement is in your hands because businesses no longer provide retirement for their employees.

Some are fortunate to choose careers that they love but how can our society expect children to choose their entire life’s course when they haven’t seen anything of the world?

Most people don’t truly live because they don’t know any better. They believe, as their parents before them did, that this is the right path and many don’t stray out of fear.

Why You Should Choose to Live

We all have had dreams and desires for a better life at one time or another in our lives. I have a great life but sometimes even I have a desire for something more. But, I choose to be happy and grateful for everything in my life.

The funny thing is that the more gratitude I have shown for my life, the more the blessings in my life have multiplied. Positive seems to breed more positive and negative breeds more negative. Don’t believe me? Try it out yourself and let me know your results. Seriously. I would love to hear all about it!
Have you ever seen the movie “The Matrix”?

Well, a few years ago I woke up from The Matrix and realized that I want a life of my own creation and not a life that I was forced into by society. But, at first I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life. I had absolutely no idea.

If you want the truth, it took me years to figure out who I was and what I wanted from my life. Now that I know, it feels liberating! Some days I wake up and wonder how I ended up with a life that I actually wanted instead of the one that was handed to me.

Is every day perfect? Hell no!

But, my life now is way better than the military hell I lived with for years and taking orders from those that only seemed to want to serve their own interests and not that of the greater good or collective unit.

We can live a life of our design without needing to answer to anyone for the decisions that we choose to make so long as we’re not doing anything illegal LOL. And we should all choose to live a life that makes us happy!

I would love to hear your thoughts and ways you are actively choosing to live your best life.

Well said! We all have the potential to make of our lives what we want them to be. Most people just go on living lives of quiet desperation without a thought that they can change themselves. I'm glad you figured out where you can go. I figured out years ago that if I was ever going to achieve my full potential, I was going to need to be self-employed. I made the leap and haven't looked back. There were days when I wondered if I'd have a place to stay at the end of the month, but I've been going on now for 13 years. It does get better. Someday, maybe you'll be able to make a full-time Steem income. I hope your dreams come true.

I stopped working in 2012 and have freelanced since then. Its been challenging but its rewarding and I like doing work that I'm actually passionate about. It has been a joy to wake up and pursue work that is worthwhile. It took me a while to figure out what I wanted to do but now I have figured things out for the most part. Hehe. So glad you have managed to find success in your pursuits and thanks for a wonderful comment!

The old adage "You can not choose what happens in life, but you can choose how you respond to it" rings a bit true in this situation. A lot of times we miss out on the blessing simply because we are not looking for it or choosing to celebrate it.

But I also believe that we have the ability to make more changes than we give ourselves credit for. The problem for most of us is that those changes often require some type of sacrifice.

  • A more laidback lifestyle may require us to quit a nice paying (but stressful) job.
  • Having financial freedom requires us to get out of debt which requires cutting back on discretionary spending (sorry Starbucks)
  • Finding that dream job may mean bucking the 4-year school system and all of the people who have ever been educated by it.

Your post is well written and on point. My only question is "Are people ready to make the sacrifice?"

You brought up an awesome point in your comment! We do have the ability to make so many changes and decisions in our lives and so many more than we think we can. Choosing to live a lifestyle that is different than "the norm" can be challenging but we all have the right to make decisions for ourselves without needing to feel bad about it. Many people are not willing to make the ultimate sacrifice in order to pursue their dreams but I hope that anyone wanting to make the leap will choose to at least consider the possibilities. Thanks so much for the comment!

It seems to me that your greatest asset is your ability to stay on course and make the necessary corrections while maintaining full speed ahead. The little zigs and zags don't slow you down or make you lose focus; you just pay more attention to your goal.

Knowing what you want and how to get there puts you ahead of everyone else and gives you the energy reserve you demonsrate by staying so engaged.

Good for you, Ivy.

Seeking happiness that is the only goal that truly should drive our lives... No every day is not perfect, there is going to be struggle but I try to be.

I cannot afford to freelance now but I keep in focus the dream of being able to live from my art again (I did once for quite a while). Our story unfolds as we write it... but it must be written by our own hand.
