Ulog 005 : Reincarnating the stairway to the library of my Alma Mater through a mural painting
Heyo! I was totally broke for the past weeks and had never got another sidelines other than steemit but unfortunately steem and steem dollars were also down back then and got nothing to sell too lol so the only thing that I can offer is my service for art like portraits, sketches, etc.
Days of finding and waiting for a miracle, i think i was quite fortunate enough to be able to find someone to give an art-related task which i think im good at. The good news, art-related stuff. The bad news, a MURAL PAINTING. I was like,
"wait... What?"
Yeah, i haven't tried to engage wt mural painting yet but i was stucked between the thoughts of "I need money" and "I can't do such thing". I was really really broke so i have no choice but to accept it. It took me 2 days to decide though.
So I had a meeting wt my client first which was a teacher in my Alma Mater, we talked about the abouts, the materials needed, the venue and the Tf(talent fee). He also let me saw the place where the painting will be applied which was a stairway to the school's soon to be library.
The place was quite big for a first-timer like me and is time-consuming too, really. So i called a friend. He was a steemian too, and been working wt him wt group art contests during our highschool days. @dzued is a close friend of mine and is comfortable to work with. We have alot of similarities thats why we can be a good team.
Our big canvas
So the night before we started the mural, I planned for the concept and made a draft sketch of it. @dzued trusts me in conceptualizing things when it comes to art though. I just asked for some of his suggestions and additional ideas.
The theme was about library stuff, like books, kids reading books, words, letters, numbers, and somewhat catchy to the eyes of the students. So I came up wt this concept :
Front view. | 45 degree-view |
Kids riding books, flow of ideas, land of books, blue sky, stars and a kid reading a book
And it was the day to start the experimentation, yeah i called it that way since it was our first time to deal wt real paints lol and to engage wt mural painting as well as making a big artwork.
So first we prepared the materials needed (wink)
The weapons
- Paint (Red, Blue, Yellow, Black, White)
- Paint brushes wt various sizes
- Rollers
- Thinner
- Newspapers and masking tape
The process
So the first thing we did was putting up some old newspapers on the stairs, near the wall. The reason why we did that is to prevent the stairs to get stained.
Attached newspapers using a masking tape
And since the wall was quite dirty, we then started applying a white base.
Consisted with 2 layers of white paint
Then we let it dry for like 10 minutes, and planned for the next move. And if you're wondering why that man was wearing like a sports attire, yeah he went to the gym before doing the mural lol
Thats me by the way! Got that tired face huh.
After that, we then started adding some blue paint to the top most part of the wall - for the sky and it consisted 2 layers of blue.
First layer, light blue
Then we applied the second layer of blue. This time, the top most of the wall has darker shade.
This is me using a broom stick with a brush attached to it to put up some paint above. | This is @dzued, busy adding up some paint. He's quite a big boy, isn't he? |
After that, I started sketching some major characters on the wall.
We just stopped there yet since it was already almost 7pm. We've done just a bit because we came like late in the afternoon so we'll just continue it next day.
The boy ready a book
- End of the first day -
The next day became more challenging since its the last day and we needed to finish the painting in the course of the time. Of course, we had learned our lesson last time so we decided to come early so that we can end on time.
Without further ado, we started immediatel and continued hitting up some blue paint. After which, I started adding some more sketches
And here's a time-lapse video of the sketching part and a bit of the coloring part.
The video was only short because my memory card hadn't enough space to record some more
So I'll just discuss you the rest of the things we did.
Before we star lightening up the dark sketches, we mixed the primary colors which are the, blue, red, andyellow in order to get our desired diversity of colors.
The primary colors
If mixed well, these colors are powerful enough to bring up a new life.
So here's a color mixing guide, each colors can make a difference. So first are the primary colors.
Primary color 1 + primary color 2= secondary color 1 | Primary color 2 + primary color 3 = secondary color 2 | Primary color 3 + primary color 1 = secondary color 3 |
Then the primary and secondary colors combination.
Primary color 3 + secondary color 1= tertiary color 1 | Primary color 2 + secondary color 1 = tertiary color 2 | Primary color 1 + secondary color 1 = tertiary color 3 |
Source
and more!
So after mixing some colors, we then started applying them to the sketches.
"The land of books"
And then we continued adding up some blue paint but this time, light blue.
The background
After that, I focused on finishing the main character up which is the boy reading a book while my partner was finishing the land of books.
"Lyka" thats my girlfrie's name btw haha! Yeah its good to be inspired when you're working on something 😉
While woking on the boy wt eyeglasses, my partner was busy creating some strokes.
Those thick lines are intense
I finished the nerdy boy and then started coloring the kids riding on the flying books.
Flying books and kids on the process
How it looked like
75% done
And then we started adding some shapes on the floating knowledge-like thing.
Shapes wt different colors on the process and 80% done
And some more shapes, some more colors!!
85% done
And to add some more designs, i decided to create some doodle stuff behind as a background.
Hatchings on patterns
After that was our favorite part. The star making!!
Dots as stars
And yeah! We enjoyed it! Hahaha
"Making our own stars"
Since I can't reach the top most part of the wall, I created something using a meter stick and a brush attached on it.
"Reaching for the stars"
We also added some numbers...
<
Numbers between the shapes
And letters...
Letters between the shapes
And of course, the steemit logo!!!
Steemit rocks!
And dtube too!!
Dtube rocks as well!
Then the final move!
"Have you visited your library today?"
How it looked like
99% done
And lastly, we left our traces behind...
@ligarayk and @dzued signing off...
and its done!
100% done!
We then first fixed our things and cleaned our mess up haha

How nice it is to go back to the old school filled with good memories with friends and "not friends" whom we shared our young feelings, hardships, and journey. If only I could go back years ago.
Yeaah youre really right :) thanks for commenting by the way

This was a super fun read! I enjoyed it.. It's very recognizable to me having no money and taking every single opportunity to earn some cash. And even though you thought about not taking the job, see how it turned out! The only thing I wanted to add als a point of criticism is that the sketches are not clear enough to actually see what's on it. But overall the post was super!
Wowowo thanks @anouk.nox!! I really appreciate it! Yes you're right, i could have sketched it harder for it be visible on cam :3 next time mate thanks!!
Aba very good! Ok n yan at least may TF. Tgal n ko di nag-mural na-miss ko naman. haha.
