Ulog2 – A little robot has joined our family!

in #ulog6 years ago (edited)

Once upon a time, in a tiny land called New Zealand, far, far away at the arse end of the world, a young couple lived with a flatmate.

The woman and the flatmate were best friends and while the man was working late most nights, the women did the shopping, made the meals, used the dishwasher and kept the flat tidyish. (Don’t worry, he did his share in the garden at the weekend.) But, all things must change, and the time came when the couple needed their own space, and the friend went out to make her own way in the world.

The man still worked late some nights, and wasn’t particularly proficient in the kitchen anyway, or even interested. So a deal was struck. The woman was to do the cooking and the man was to do the cleaning. However, first time up, he found the vacuuming was too hard on his bad back. So they hired a fairy godmother called Mary to come and clean once a fortnight, and he did the dishes and kept the house clean and tidy in between.

Possibly this image of Mary is slightly fanciful.

This wasn’t always an easy task, as the woman was prone to being a bit untidy. After she “made magic in the kitchen” it often looked like a bomb had gone off. And some days, the mere sight of her desk was enough to send him into a major depression!

So saying they lived happily ever after might not be entirely accurate!

Fast forward to 2018, and they’re still together after nearly 30 years, and haven’t killed each other yet, so that’s close enough to Happy Ever After for me.

But disaster has struck! Fairy godmother (mark 3) has gone on holiday to Canada for 6 weeks for a family wedding. Fairy godmother isn’t as young as she was, and is prone to backache and migraines herself, and sometimes it’s three weeks between visits. So they have already learnt how dirty things can get without her.

The (no longer young) couple know it’s time to pull their socks up and do their own vacuuming and toilet cleaning.

A twist in the tale

The man’s mother was about to turn 80 and mentioned, in passing, an interest in robotic vacuum cleaners. Of course, she would never buy one herself, but that gave them a clue she was starting to find her cleaning a bit tedious. Given that they were very low on ideas of how to suitably celebrate the major birthday, they jumped on the idea, and sneakily ordered the cheapest one available – an iRobot Roomba 637 - on sale.

It arrived the next day, and they decided to try it out. And they loved it! It was like a new pet, but a useful one who cleaned fur out of the carpet instead of depositing it. Other people had complained that they were loud, but the couple thought it was more of a purr, and much quieter than the regular vac that the poor fairy godmother had to use.

Yes, true, they did have to move some things out of its way, but that created much less back strain than using the old Miele. And they were astonished at how much dirt, dust and fluff it picked up, even though the woman had vacuumed only two days before.

Little Roo loves going under the bed

He's finished with the rug and ready to do the rest of the hall:

How were they ever going to part with little Roo?

Which brings us to today…

We’re not going to part with it! We're going to buy another one. @sift666 had enough Hotpoints on his Visa to get a very good e-voucher from the store that sells them. So really it’s only going to cost us $150. Bargain, right? And what’s money for anyway, if not to make life a little more pleasant?

So we have the e-voucher and will order another little Roo first thing tomorrow. All going well it will arrive Tuesday morning, just in time to take it with us to the birthday lunch.

And never fear, there will still be work for our fairy godmother when she returns!

Thanks for reading

Hey @kiwideb - don't forget your sister with a bad back has a major birthday next year hint hint!!!!! hehehehe

Ooh yes, you would love a little Roo. Just watching him work is fun and entertaining. I don't know why, but it definitely seems like a "he".

It seems like a universal problem. In every house in my family there is someone who is obsessed about order and another who can peacefully live with such a bomb in the kitchen.

Yes, I think you're right. Also I can operate with 30 open tabs on my browser, but @sift666 can only have a couple! His Inbox is empty and mine has 2000 emails in it! I like order, but seem to be incapable of achieving it.

This sounds great you can operate with 30 open tabs. But it is not the same as being tidy or not. It is the ability to multitask. Women are better at multitasking, unlike men, their brains allow for it. I personally don't believe that everything should be perfectly ordered unless it is an annoying mess. :)

That ties in with concepts of Chinese Traditional Medicine. The Yin (female) meridians are always working - spleen, lung, kidney, liver, heart, circulatory system. Whereas the Yang (male) meridians work then rest - stomach, large intestine, small intestine, gall bladder, bladder, triple warmer. Historically, biologically, women would have been working / on alert with a wide area of focus, whereas men would have worked very hard then rested.

This is good peace of information I thank you for. :)

hehehehe awesome mam you tell us whole story through a tale amazing and the twist was pretty awesome heheheheh stay happy

Glad you liked how I turned it into a fairy tale :-)

30 years is an achievement, no doubt!
And I guess it's the fun small things, like a new little robot, and little changes that make it even imaginable to me :)

I wish you all the happiness

I could never have imagined 30 years either, but somehow we got there. Well, nearly there, it will be 30 years in November. Thanks for the good wishes.

Got a Bio-Kult 60 pack in the mail already and took half a cap. this morning. Let you know how things go. Thanks @kiwideb

Oops, have been meaning to check in and see how you're going with the BK, and somehow 4 days have gone past. Did you get any kind of die-off reaction, or was it all good?

A little up-set but not bad. Going to take it slow.

Yeah, you can't avoid the effects of die off entirely, but if you take it slow, you can manage it so it's not too uncomfortable.

@kiwideb, I don't suppose you happen to have a cat in the house as well, do you? One of the funniest things I ever did see on the Internet was YT videos of cats riding around on those little robot vacuums, even cats jousting with each other on iRobot-back.

Yes, we have a very large Maine Coon. We've seen the videos too, but can't see it happening. He isn't freaking out too much though, just looking at it very suspiciously!

Haha, Maine Coon vs Rhoomba, now that would be a video to see! :-)

Wouldn't want to risk him breaking it!
