#ULOG S2018E036 : Climbing Coconut Trees and Finding Weird Flowers in Guindulman, Bohol, Philippines

in #ulog6 years ago

Before returning back to Cebu City, I had made sure that the family go out and enjoy the fresh air of the mountainside, hire someone to pick some young coconut and make a dessert out of its juice and flesh.

A coconut is all of these: a seed, a fruit, and a nut! Coconut is a seed because it is the reproductive part of the tree, coconut is a fruit because it is a fibrous one-seeded drupe and coconut is a nut because a loose definition of a nut is nothing but a one-seeded ‘fruit’. - source

Last year, James and I had accepted a pawn offer of a piece of land with coconut trees in it. Because we love coconuts and there were feedbacks telling us that we'll be earning from it, we gave in and so now, once in a while, I would crave for "Lamaw".

But first, allow me to show you around:

This was taken on our way to the land. This is a part in town in which the trees are still abundant.

We arrived and found Edward already checking if there are young coconuts in this tree.

Finally, we had the chance to go out and make our own "Lamaw" dessert. I made a video on how that day went, you can watch it below:

"Buko Lamaw" is a term we use to refer a dessert which contains buko juice, buko flesh, condensed milk, some locally made biscuits called "patatas" and Royal Tru Soda, ice cubes will be added too to make it cold. There's no proper measurement in how many should be added into the mixture, we just do a taste test and we should be good to go.

Some of the harvest.

To take the buko juice out, Edward cut an opening at the side of the fruit.

Here, my brother was pouring the juice out so Edward can cut it open so the flesh can be scraped out. Check out my brother @jjeeppeerrxx143's new tattoo, its not yet finished though.

Now sister in law @gecellbeltran is ready to scrape the flesh out!

Mama helped too! Okay, I must stop taking photos and help them.

At the location, we had to trek towards the land, it took around ten to 15 minutes from the main high way, we were accompanied by a family friend who was also assigned to watch over the land and take care of it.

They planted some few plants there too like corn and beans. However, they said some monkeys often go down from the mountain and eat their produce but its okay.

Anybody here knows this flower's name?

We spotted a weird flower as well while we were waiting for Edward to drop some young coconuts down from a tall coconut tree. The flower was maroon in color, it has a wide petal, some stalk which has beetles living in it and then a brain-like top. Edward doesn't have an idea what these plants are but there were few of them around the area. They said it smells bad sometimes but they have not dared to touch it as it might do harm to them.

Edward's kids offered us some wild guavas too which really brought back some childhood memories. In fact, picking young coconuts and making "Buko Lamaw" also brings back high school memories where we would go to a classmate's farm, pick as many coconuts and enjoy the desert in a hot afternoon.

Picking up guavas the carefree child's way.

After having enough juice and buko flesh, we mixed all the ingredients and ate it. It was sweet and refreshing plus it's very easy to make. We brought some back home to share with our cousins who were visiting us.

It was an afternoon well spent!
