Wada Funded Study : 40-60% of athletes are on PEDs but only 1-2% are caught !

in #ufc6 years ago (edited)

Is it too easy to cheat the system ?

This work was funded by the World Anti-Doping Agency/Agence Mondiale Antidopage, Montréal, Canada (WADA). The approximate cost of conducting the study was US$155,000.

Doping in Two Elite Athletics Competitions Assessed by Randomized-Response Surveys

Below are some bullet points of the study.

To deter doping among elite athletes, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) oversees testing of several hundred thousand blood and urine samples annually.

  • 2167 athletes were surveyed
  • The survey took place at two sporting events ( WCA & PAG )
  • Athletes had anonymity when answering the sensitive question
  • Survey took place in 2011
  • 40-60% of athletes are on PED's - according to the study
  • Only 1–2% test of athletes test positive.

With so many athletes doping should we just allow everyone to dope and make it an even playing field ?

Does this study influence your view on athletes who are using PED's ?
Lets hear you opinion on the topic below in the comment section.

I agree doping is a problem. I don't think letting everyone dope is the answer. The rules at least keep some level of control over doping. I think Lance Armstrong was not as evil as portrayed. I've always thought he just kind of did more or a better job of what was pretty common in his sport at the time. Yes he was guilty but it wasn't about him but the sport at the time.

I don't think letting everyone dope is the answer either, even if the bulk are not getting caught at least the fear of getting caught is still there.

What do you think of the baseball records that were affected by the doping scandal? Bonds and McGuire were both Bay area athletes. The Giants have been "rehabilitating" Bonds reputation. He is at Giants functions again. He wasn't for several years.

My personal opinion on records when it involves PED users is put an asterisk next to the record and next to the PED users name. This way the record is still recorded but fans see that a PED user is the record holder. This way the individual fan can decide if they want to view the record as legit or not.

The plague of doping.

Hmm. As an athlete, I personally do not support the notion of tolerating doping. I don't want to sound righteous but tolerating underhanded tactics will soon lead to perceiving it as "normal". It creates a chain of bias decisions and "bad", "wrong" and "unfair" will feel okay because everybody's doing it.

A lot of unfair judgment and morally wrong ideas become "normal" because we let it be, thinking that we can't do anything about it. I think it's because of how sports are portrayed and how winning is valued. Shouldn't being an athlete make us better examples? We go through a lot of pain and we spend so much of ourselves and our time training to become better. I think it's an insult to one's own self and abilities to resort to using PEDs. But hey, that's my opinion. I just hope athletes are also taught good values together with their skills.

Everyone's morals are different. There are some that believe it's ok to use PED's. That being said, if you compete in a sport and agree to a set of rules then you should obey those set of rules. If those rules include no PED use then that means NO PED USE.

Thanks for your response.

I quite agree. People value things differently which makes rules useful. It serves as a guide and set standards.

The discussion is very timely as PED use has become rampant. Nice choice of topic.

Hi @rentmoney,
Thanks for taking part in my contest. You've got an upvote from me.

Doping is really a sad story. I've been an elite sportsman myself but fortunately wasn't good enough to be in contact with this problem. Doping is a kind of illness that has touched the sport at the same level than corruption and cheating have touched the economical world.

You can't become an elite sportsman without investing everything into it. So your success becomes an existential question. Athletes have to be successful. So it is very tempting for them to cheat... Doping is a problem linked to a society based on success and money.

Best regards,
Achim

So true .... if you are going to be at the top of any sport then that sport is your everyday life. Everything you have is put into it. I was an athlete at one point as well. Some will never understand the work that goes into being the best you can be at any specific sport.

Thanks for your comment and up-vote !
