Here are some rules of thumb for beginners.
- Only comment on things you've actually read AND have something to say about.
- Don't do it for attention. It's obvious.
- Have nothing to add? What didn't you understand? Ask a question, this appeals to the writer's expertise, and gets them talking to you!
- Keep comments brief. Learning to edit yourself is a good thing for a writer.
