Discover Ukraine - Korostyshiv. Picturesque lake and granite rocks
Hello from Ukraine!
It has been a long time since I last wrote a travel post. Today I will tell you about a nice place that is close enough to Kyiv for a day walk or for a few days of rest in a tent. It is a picturesque lake surrounded by pine forest and granite rocks. Locals call it Korostyshivsky quarry. There are a few smaller and bigger lakes around, but this one is the most famous.
Well, despite the relative proximity to Kyiv and the location of 1.6 km from the international highway M06 / E40, it is not easy to get here by public transport. Therefore, the most optimal choice is a car.
My husband and I came here twice: in summer and autumn. The first trip was an exploration. We learned that in the summer day, the surrounding forest is crowded with people and vehicles. Also, there is no equipped parking, so the car will have to be placed along the road or inscribed between trees and stones. However, there are several garbage cans.
As it turned out, the lake is a popular holiday destination for locals and residents of the surrounding cities, a location for photographers and newlyweds, as well as rock-climbing enthusiasts.
On our second visit, we were there recently in October, but also during the weekend. To my surprise, there were no less people. Most came here for a picnic with children and pets. They rested and roasted meat on fire. Rock climbers were training on both sides of the lake. There was also one wedding procession.
From the side of the road, the bank is flat and there are a bridge and a wooden deck near the water. There are several pavilions around it. On three other sides, the lake is surrounded by high cliffs. From them you can jump into the water, it is deep enough here. Also, it is a good place for swimming, sunbathing or walking in the woods.
We were set up to take a walk around the lake and take pictures. I immediately recognized the place where the Ukrainian adventure-fantasy movie "Stronghold" was filmed, although this is not the only film that was shot here.
Obviously, the lake is in demand not only for wedding and children's photographers but also for film directors. So, in my opinion, it is worth talking about this area a little more.
The whole region is a part of the oldest geological structure in Ukraine - Ukrainian Crystal Shield, which occupies the central part of the country, about 30% of the square. It quadrupled 3,000 million years ago and is composed of pre-Cambrian igneous rocks. After the eruption, the rock crystallized, have been through metamorphic transformation, and so formed granite, basalt and other rocks. The process of rock formation continues nowadays.
Did you know that Ukraine is the country with the largest reserves of decorative stone in the world? We produce about 10 types of granite. The most famous area is the Zhytomyr region, where this picturesque lake is located.
In fact, it's a flooded former granite quarry. The traces of the extraction are indicated by the right shape of granite blocks and furrows on stones and rocks, left by such tools.
