10 Free Things To Do In Brussels, Belgium

in #travelfeed6 years ago

If you are travelling to Brussels in Belgium and the budget is tight, here are a few free things you can do and still come away enriched by the culture and vibrancy of this cosmopolitan place.

1. Admire art on the comics strip route – images from various famous Belgian comic book series such as Tintin, Smurfs, Lucky Luke and many others.

The Belgians seem to really love their comic strips and so do we!

2. Chill out and hide from the hectic city pace in one of the city’s parks

There are numerous beautiful parks to sit around in, Botanical Garden, Royal Park, also known as Brussels Park, are all located right in the city centre, easily accessible on foot.

3. Admire flower displays in Grand Place, if you are so lucky as to visit when such a festival is on.

The day before I left I caught a glimpse of what the Grand Place will look like for the following four days of floral celebrations.

Needless to say, I felt my timing was all off.

4. Hang around Grand Place and admire the jewels of Flemish architecture.

The lavishly decorated guildhalls and the Town Hall are truly impressive, their style is different from what you’ll see in many European capitals.

Before visiting Brussels I read all sorts of guides extolling the beauty of Grand Place architecture. With all that excitement one starts wondering if this is a bit of an exaggeration...

...but actually it’s not.

It really is an impressive backdrop for your pictures and excursions.

5. Have fun taking pictures of sculptures and other art in the city.

There are so many surprises lurking around the corners of this creative city, so have your camera ready!

6. Persuade your fellow travelers to participate in some street activities such as playing pétanque or table tennis.

It seems the facilities are there for everyone to use.

If you are traveling on your own, it might be a good place to strike up a conversation with people enjoying themselves and join in the fun.

7. Go window shopping in the oldest covered shopping arcade in Europe – Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert.

Admire some inspiring art and jewellery, chocolate shops and luxury goods. There are some lovely cafes to lounge about in and taste some truly exquisite chocolate creations.

8. Visit a museum – Brussels is a place with many.

And the best news is there are many museums that are always free and some are free on certain days. For an exhaustive list, click here

9. Pop into a church or a cathedral.

Chances are you’ll discover some really interesting historic, architectural and artistic gems.

Besides, it’s a perfect hide away from the sun or, more importantly, from the rain, which is frequent in Belgium, I’ve heard.

10. Practise your French.

I know, I know, it’s not exactly for everyone, but…, after all, it’s a francophone country.
Bon voyage!

Travel Brussels, enjoy your life!

Beautiful post.
Very practical.
One of my aunts-in-law studied in Belgium many years ago. She talks about that culture with such admiration and appreciation. Hercule Poirot is my favorite detective and the Tintin comics are just great (Learned about them after the movie adaptation, but have read the comics in English after that).

Thanks @hlezama !

It's a very cosmopolitan place and I was really surprised to see that there's so much fun art around :D
I also love Hercule Poirot and Tintin :))) I read all of Tintin adventures as an adult and absolutely loved them!
Thanks for stopping by.

My pleasure. Beautiful blog. It's a blessing to have the chance to see the beautiful part of our planet.

Thank you for taking the time to learn the world and learning about your life. I like to travel, but I can not make the trip that I want to go because of my dog, but I have to make a good plan so I should go on a trip for a short time. Nice to meet you. I am a friend from today. I wish you all the best and healthy. Your friend lucky7777

Many thanks @lucky7777 for stopping by and commenting.
I hope you'll find a way to travel, maybe even with your dog :D
Have a lovely day!

Next time you should visit Antwerp... you will discover that Belgium is not (only) a francophone country... In fact, most of Belgium is Flemish, and we also have a very small German speaking part :-)

Hi @pixelfan thanks for stopping by and commenting.
I appreciate your sentiment concerning the languages spoken in Belgium. While I have already been to Antwerp a few times and really liked the place, this particular post was about Brussels and 10 free things to do in the capital.
By the way, here's my recent post about my experience in Antwerp's Diamond district https://busy.org/@vliet/10-lessons-learnt-in-diamond-district-in-antwerp

No problem or stress :-) I just reacted because you wrote : "it’s a francophone country" You should have written "it's a mostly francophone city" ;-)
On my way to your other post...

Thanks for your comment and clarifications, will be careful next time :-)

The paintings on the walls are so cute and they impress me:)

They are really cool and there are so many, that one can spend the whole day just wandering around and taking pictures!

Awesome highlights on what we can do in Belgium @vliet! I wasn't able to make it there when I was in Netherland. Will definitely travel to Europe again.

A tip for you to win #placestoremember contest: the contest focuses on personal story rather than highlight and traveling tips. Perhaps you can write a more personal experience in your next submission, that will increase your chance of winning :)

And don't forget to add #archisteem too.

Cheers!

Hi @kimzwarch , yes. it's a place really worth visiting!

Thanks for the tip re #placestoremember, I didn't realize highlight and tips posts are not really suitable. Ok so, next time I'll keep this info in mind.
Have a nice day!

No worry @vliet, keep it up as I think you are producing great contents :)
You can read it up here about the contest.

Steem on!

Dear @vliet,

Stay tuned and Steem on!

Sincerely from,

@archisteem and team

thanks @archisteem for the reminder re tags.
I've been informed by @kimzwarch that this type of post isn't really suitable for the contest.
Will add both tags next time.
