Travel Diaries - Mirissa, Sri Lanka
Moving along the southern coast of Sri Lanka, we arrived in a town called Mirissa. Just an easy hour to an hour and a half bus ride (approximately 50km) from Tangalle it is a much smaller, but not necessarily quieter town of barely 5,000 people. Once you see the beach this town has to offer, you'll understand what makes it so popular amongst the holidaymakers.
We stayed in Mirissa for just two nights, but this did not stop us from doing some exploring as well as some sunbathing. When it comes to scenic spots, Mirissa has a few. Just off the main beach, you'll find a little rock which is perfect for sunset viewing. Mind you, it does get a bit busy around sunset, but it is worth the visit if you do not mind getting a bit wet.
To get to that rock you'll have to go through a little stretch of water. I can imagine the depth of the water depends on the tide, but since we only went there once, I don't know how much. When we did go, it was just over the knee level. Should be easy enough to get up there being relatively dry. Well not in my case, the waves can easily splash you or if you manage to avoid them, there will be someone else who falls in right next to you and drags you with them.
Should you find yourself in Mirissa, do go and check out Coconut Garden. It is very picturesque and perfect for any kind of photos for any of your social media accounts. It's one of those places we discovered on Instagram and are happy to have visited. This place can of course just like every other viewpoint around, get rather busy, but people generally queue up nicely for everyone to have a chance for an unobstructed photo opportunity. Sometimes you do get those Instagrammers who are taking forever just to get that one perfect photo - don't be afraid to speak up to ask for a turn as well. It can be annoying, but unless you make yourself known, no one will pay attention or grant you the chance.
Mirissa is very walkable and we did not use TukTuks even once. Usually, unless we know that the distance is going to get us tired, we tend to walk. Walking around is a perfect opportunity to explore and find hidden gems what you'd normally just whizz past and would never see.
No matter where you choose to spend your sunset, in Mirissa every spot will provide you with some amazing colours and photo opportunities. If you're anything like me, you would end up with a multitude of sunset photos every time you see one. Sunsets are one of those natural wonders you just can't get enough of.
Looks like an interesting place to spend a few nights..
It sure was. Very vibey and relaxed at the same time.

you climbed the small rock on the water beach too. Crazy to get up right?
We did yeah, it is crazy but to be fair it's nothing compared to some other climbs we've already done in SL. It's a piece of cake compared to Sigirya for instance. But the view you get from the rock is absolutely worth it.

Beautiful. I've got Australian friends that lived there for two years

Oh wow, I can't imagine living an expat life in Mirissa though, but I'm sure your friend was loving it 😉
I'm not so sure... Aussies seems to not like many other places except their own country much... 😂

Yeah, that is true. But funny enough all the Australians want to get away and all Europeans, for instance, consider Australia as a dream destination 😆
The human race can never be content can we? 🤔

Interesting photo story! Thank you! I am still focused on traveling around Europe but I suppose once this period is over, Sri Lanka would be in my top destinations! :)
Cheers!
Hey there @tggr!
I love all the beach shots! So crisp and clear.
I love how we always try to do something new in places we visit. Just like you taking the courage to walk over that huge rock!
Gotta visit Sri Lanka some time.

Thanks. We luckily had pre-booked our accommodation and only had to follow google maps. I would not be able to pick any from that list, besides the one we stayed in was not on there.
