Indonesia #11: Diving in Komodo – Day 2

We were especially looking forward to this day as three of Komodo National Park's most famous dive sites were on the program today: Crystal Rock, The Cauldron, aka Shotgun and Manta Point. After breakfast in the dive center (which incidentally is included in the price), the trip started towards Komodo National Park. About 1.5 hours later we were at the Crystal Rock. Hardly in the water, we already had 5-6 white tips in front of nose - very cool!

Crystal Rock is a cone shaped rock in the water which is famous for its fish and coral wealth and notorious for its strong currents. Unfortunately, due to the current, we also had some problems taking good pictures (especially since we only had a cheap copy of GoPro with us), but this dive site is one of the most popular in Komodo for a good reason!

A truly unique experience is The Cauldron, a drift dive between two islands. The special thing about this is that the passage between the islands is getting narrower and the flow is getting stronger. The narrowest point (also known as ** shotgun **) is only a few feet wide. As soon as you drift towards it, the Divemaster gives a signal so that the whole group can turn 180 ° and hold on to the "shotgun". There you can hang in the middle of the current like on a motorcycle and watch the sharks, they love to play in the current. There we also saw a 3m Gray Shark. After a minute or two you let go and continue drifting, as the passage widens again afterwards, the drift tempo also decreases.

At Manta Point there were some mantas as expected. Even though we had seen a few the day before, this was an incredible experience again. New this time was a so-called Melanistic Manta, a completely black and rare specimen.

The pictures you have done are like specially done for travel magazine , I like the most the last one because of such impressive unique sunset, you are lucky to be able to experience it life. But of course underwater pictures with such exotic underwater life is also something that we have to think about when we leave out litter and garbage just laying there where we were having little stop. Especially how that underwater animals suffer from that. Of course, as it is said "Out of sight out of Mind" but it is not really disappeared. So your post and pictures are reminder to keep this pearl of nature and do everything to safe it for future :)

Yeah it is important to preserve these wonderful coral reefs!

Hi @roadtrips , the pictures are spectacular. I'm impressed, not only for the good pictures, but the diving tour itself, so close to the sharks. It would scare me to dive with sharks! But in the other hand, the place looks so beautiful that I guess it's worth it!

Yeah it is an truly impressive feeling :)

Nice photos of underwater world you have there. And wow, the sharks seem to not care about you and did not either swim away or greeted you with its teeth. 😊

I thought you should have asked the divemaster to take your photos while holding like motorcycle at the Cauldron.

How near are these diving sites ti each other that you were able to visit all in just one day?

Yes you can visit all dive sites on one day thats a full day trip.

Cool. How deep have you gone down the Crystal Rock before you saw those sharks? And how near were you to them when you took the photos? I'm just curious that they're really just there like in a big aquarium. 😊

Oh wow, you guys are on fire with these amazing posts! I remember you sharing just couple of weeks in some curation post and here you are again, this time got it from Curie! Well deserved.

Man, if I saw 3m big shark, I'd crap my jocks immediately. Or neopren, whatever hahaha :D The Melanistic Manta looks stuning and makes me respect her as well. Pretty big thing she is hah :D Btw I didn't know there's a lace in this world named Komodo - I always only knew it's a crypto project hah :D

Thanks for you comment, glad to hear you liked it!

Love the photos @roadtrips. Your cheap GoPro works really well I think to have been able to take those gorgeous shots :) Diving is such a beautiful experience isn't it, it is a whole new world in there. The sharks and manta are so majestic looking and the corals are healthy too. Love the last photo too. A beautiful serene sunset view. I do hope they get to preserve this amazing site for many, many years to come. Thank you for sharing with us your experience!
