[TRAVELTIPS] Peeing in Rome

in #travelfeed6 years ago (edited)

I just returned from my 5-day vacation in Rome and I want to discuss with you a very important topic - peeing when sightseeing all day. Summer in Rome is hot, very hot and you have to hydrate. But what do you do when you have to use the toilet?

First of all, you have to find a toilet, considering that Rome does not have public toilets.

Where to find toilets:

  1. In some subway stations and it will cost you 1 euro.
  2. If you travel by train, the toilets can be found on the train in the last wagon.
  3. Free toilets can be found in some museums, but you have to pay the entrance, so if you visit the museum and know that you have been hydrating, I’m suggesting to go to the toilet (Just to be preventive).
  4. In some locations in the city (Are hidden and cost 1 euro).
  5. The free option would be to go to some restaurants and ask if you can use the toilet (I managed to talk to a very nice lady who owned a small and cozy restaurant near the Fontana di Trevi and she let me use the restaurant's toilet), but most of the time you will be refused. It would be best to buy an espresso or water, which will cost around 1.5 to 2.5 euros.

Desperate times call for desperate measures!

After you found the toilet and managed to solve the situation, comes the true fun of figuring out how to flush the thing. Button on the wall? Button on the floor? Plunger on top of the water tank? Chain pulley from the ceiling? What’s the thing with so many ways to flush the toilet? At some point it really was confusing.

To conclude the post with even more information, I'd like to show you an app that I found in desperate moments in Google Play: It’s called WC Rome

“With the map you can see easily where the public toilets near you are located. For each public toilet are indicated: days and opening hours and additional information to help you find it.
In addition you can use the navigation system guided to reach the toilet in question.”

P.S. Just don’t pee in public. There are huge fines in Italy for that. Here’s an example where a guy was fined 10.000 euro for public urinating. Ouch!

P.P.S. Don't stare to much at the water! 😆

Didn't know it could be that hard to find some relief spots there :) Must be difficult when I will get there one day as I need to pee a lot hehe

I think that you'll be just fine :) and I hope that my tips will help you. Don't forget that there are a lot of fountains - you shouldn't stare to much at the water :)) It's frustrating when you really need to pee...
