Hello dear globetrotters,
today I will show you an old traditional art that decorates the rural houses in Upper Bavaria. The general topic of graffiti has often been reported about, after all this facade art is now part of our cities and you can find it in all kinds of places. Not everything is art that is sprayed on the walls, but there are also many outstanding exceptions of really artistic paintings. Sometimes it is also very fitting, like this painting on the wall of a youth centre.

... or it is used to beautify cities, like this normally concrete grey electrical box.

But today I want to show you another kind of graffiti, which is called Lüftlmalerei in bavarian. A nice example are these two pictures, which show the buildings of an old-established furniture store and a shoe shop. This is a great outdoor advertisement without light box or neon writing.

If you like this picture, then you have to come with me now, because I want to show you some of these ventilation paintings from the pedestrian zone of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The city of Garmisch-Partnkirchen is located in Upper Bavaria at the foot of Germany's largest mountain, the Zugspitze.

The Lüftlmalerei is a traditional art form, which is mainly located in Upper Bavaria, in the rural area of Austria and in Tyrol. This art is already centuries old and comparable to Trompe-l'oeil, as it can be found in churches, for example. Through this feigned three-dimensionality, rooms appear larger and domed buildings can be faked on the ceiling.

The Bavarian word Lüftlmalerei probably comes from the facade painter Franz Seraph Zwinck (1748-1792) from Oberammergau. His painted house was called "beim Lüftl" and was known beyond the city limits for its elaborate facade painting.

The objects depicted are often of religious origin, such as portraits of patron saints and biblical scenes, but also secular motifs such as animals, professions, hunting scenes, themes from mythology and heroic sagas find their place on the facades.

In former times the pictures were painted in the fresco technique. The paint was applied to the fresh lime plaster so that it could mix with the damp mortar and penetrate deeply. The paintings could survive for so long and even environmental influences such as rain and snow could not harm them.

Today, the colours are of course better and more durable, which is why the Secco technique is mostly used today. Secco comes from Italian and means nothing else than painting on dry ground.

I hope you enjoyed the pictures. If you are ever in Upper Bavaria, then take a look at the houses, because you will discover great works of art.

Thank you for reading my report and your interest in Lüftlmalerei.
