Lehel Market, Budapest - A City A Story Photo Weekly Contest
There is this strange shaped building which represents a ship and is not far from Westend Center which is a home of the market and was built in 2002 by the plans of Laszlo Rajk jr. and it stirred a big argument around it.
It was built in the style of postmodern and cost around 2 million dollars.
The place was used as a market from the 1890's but it was quite dirty and messy so the locals was afraid to demolish because then the rats can flood their properties...
After the second WW it was the home of some black market activities and later sole traders moved in.
The old market was shut down in 2000 and the building started next year.
It has 4 levels above the ground and one under.
It has steel structures and glass ceiling all over. It has a shape of a ship which is supported by the mast in front.
It has all the traditional merchants places like meat, vegetables stalls but you can find some offices and restaurants as well.
It has won a price from FIABCI in Prix d'excellence hence the Hungarian architects criticized it heavily.
I find it quite interesting and I just love the steel structure and the colors it was painted. Red, yellow, blue.
If you are in Budapest, you should visit it and make some pictures. As I did some days ago.
The place was busy and it had a nice atmosphere so you can find the best ingredients for your traditional Hungarian dish.
