YourMateTravels#26 - Walking with Elephants [ENG/DE]

That was one kind of an experience! :D
Those animals really are impressive! Slow and mighty. Frankly I felt tiny and vulnerable besides them. But first things first:

Das war mal eine Erfahrung! :D
Diese Tiere sind wirklich beeindruckend! Langsam und mächtig. Ganz ehrlich gesagt fühlte ich mich winzig und verletzlich neben ihnen. Aber zuerst mal folgendes:

After checking facts about riding an elephant I decided to do it once in my life and go for the shortest walk.
We chose the “Ban Kwan Chang” camp because they treat their elephants properly and are located far off the tourism behind some banana and gum tree plantations.

Nachdem ich mir die Fakten zum Elefantenreiten angesehen hatte, entschied ich mich dafür, das einmal in meinem Leben zu machen und die kürzeste Strecke zu wählen.
Wir haben das “Ban Kwan Chang” Camp ausgesucht, weil sie ihre Elefanten ordentlich behandeln und weit vom Tourismus entfernt hinter Bananen- und Gummibaumplantagen sind.

Driving there already was an experience! Nearly soiled my tunic as I suddenly saw a big elephant on the street in front of me - you can experience it with me in this video:

Dort hinzufahren war bereits ein Erlebnis! Hab mir fast in die Hosen gemacht, als ich plötzlich einen großen Elefanten auf der Straße vor mir sah - du kannst das gleich mit mir in dem Video hier erleben:

Yes, I missed the entry.
Turning around we enter a relaxed camp with loads of plants, shade and elephant poop. Piles of elephant poop actually. And no elephants in chains right there, woohooo!

Ja, ich hab die Einfahrt verpasst.
Wir drehen um und fahren in ein entspanntes Camp mit Unmengen an Pflanzen, Schatten und Elefantendung. Berge an Elefantendung. Und keine Elefanten in Ketten hier, woohooo!

We get ourselves a ticket for the ride for 600 THB (= 15,60 €) each. This and other stuff on this day were paid by Flo’s mom by the way - thanks Martina! :)
Aaaand we’re ready to go!

Wir holen uns ein Ticket für den Ritt um 600 THB (= 15,60 €) pro Person. Das Ticket und andere Dinge an dem Tag wurden übrigens von Flo’s Mutter bezahlt - danke Martina! :)

As soon as she started walking both Flo's and mine jaw dropped. What a crazy feeling. One foot is placed after the other and you're thrown around in that seat. That metal bar they placed over our legs was necessary.

Als sie zu gehen begann sind Flo und mir die Futterluke runtergeklappt. Was für ein verrücktes Gefühl. Ein Fuß wird nach dem anderen gesetzt und du wirst in dem Sitz herumgeschubst. Die Metallstange oberhalb unserer Beine war notwendig.

Although I loved the experience and used to enjoy visiting the zoo I started thinking about this a bit more. This elephant in particular had its own ideas and I'm entirely certain animals have feelings. Is it ok to do with animals what we do just because we can and take profit? Would the animals do it vice versa if they could?

Overall I had a great time on this island of Koh Chang and I’d love to visit it again. :)
Since our visa runs out we want to see other parts of south-east asia, it’s time to leave for Cambodia!
Before it comes to bad stuff, enjoy one last nice impression of Koh Chang:

Obwohl mir die Erfahrung sehr gefallen hat und ich auch gerne in den Zoo gehe, begann ich mehr darüber nachzudenken. Dieser Elefant im Besonderen hatte einen starken Charakter und ich bin mir ganz sicher, dass Tiere Gefühle haben. Ist es in Ordnung, mit Tieren zu tun, was wir tun, nur weil wir es können und Profit damit generieren? Würden die Tiere es umgekehrt genauso auch machen, wenn sie könnten?

Insgesamt hatte ich eine großartige Zeit auf der Insel Koh Chang und ich besuche sie liebend gerne wieder. :)
Da unser Visum ausläuft und wir andere Teile von Südostasien sehen wollen, ist es Zeit nach Kambodscha aufzubrechen!
Bevor die schlechten Dinge beginnen, gönn dir noch eine letzte schöne Impression von Koh Chang:

Cambodia - Bad Times, Good Times

I don’t want to bother you with the details. Just so much: we got infos in advance and booked the entire trip from Koh Chang (Thailand) to Koh Rong (Cambodia) so we can’t get ripped off. And guess what: we got ripped off.
The bad part of it goes down right after the border in the midday-heat where we’re running out of options and energy. Besides coping with the heat I have to hold back Flo from doing a enraged kamikaze-attack right there. :D

Ich will euch nicht mit den Details langweilen. Nur so viel: Wir haben uns vorab informiert und den ganzen Trip von Koh Chang (Thailand) nach Koh Rong (Kambodscha) gebucht, damit wir nicht abgezockt werden. Und rate mal: wir wurden abgezockt.
Der schlechte Teil beginnt gleich nach der Grenze, wo uns in der Mittagshitze die Möglichkeiten und die Energie ausgehen. Neben dem Kampf mit der Hitze muss ich auch noch Flo davon abhalten, nicht gleich aus Wut eine Kamikaze-Attacke zu starten. :D

Right in the clutches of fraudsters we have only one reasonable option: play their game.
So we get charged another 20 € and drive down to Sihanoukville. The ride is crazy, way too fast and with maneuvers which remind me of my crazy Uber ride in Vienna.
No pictures are taken the entire way. I feel really uncomfortable and for like three hours I don’t see any white-skinned person.

As we stop for gas stuff gets weird for a moment. People start looking at us. Our driver pays, gets into the car, locks it, one guy in unusually neat clothes and shades knocks the cars window, a kid comes and touches the door handles. What’s gonna happen now? Our driver quickly pulls out of the gas station and we proceed to Sihanoukville. He keeps calm and doesn’t say anything. Is it my perception or is something weird?

In den Fängen der Betrüger haben wir nur eine vernünftige Option: ihr Spiel spielen.
Wir zahlen also 20 € extra und fahren runter nach Sihanoukville. Die Fahrt ist verrückt, viel zu schnell und gespickt mit Manövern, die mich an die verrückte Uber-Fahrt in Wien erinnern.
Am ganzen Weg mache ich kein Foto. ich fühle mich wirklich unwohl und für etwa drei Stunden sehe ich kein Bleichgesicht.

Als wir zum Tanken stehen bleiben, wird’s einen Moment lang seltsam. Menschen beginnen uns zu mustern. Unser Fahrer zahlt, steigt ein, sperrt zu, ein Typ mit auffällig ordentlichen Klamotten und Sonnenbrille klopft ans Fenster, ein Kind kommt und greift an die Türgriffe. Was passiert jetzt? Unser Fahrer fährt schnell von der Tanke weg und weiter geht’s nach Sihanoukville. Er bleibt ruhig und sagt nichts. Liegt es an meiner Wahrnehmung oder ist hier etwas komisch?

We’re more than happy that we make it to the ferry in time! The ferry apparently is a boat. Where you get a life vest. But we were overloaded so...we don’t get one.
Half an hour later we arrive at the island Koh Rong which screams three words: paradise, hippies and party!

Wir sind mehr als glücklich, dass wir die Fähre noch rechtzeitig erwischen! Die Fähre ist offensichtlich ein Boot. Man bekommt eine Schwimmweste. Aber wir sind überladen, also...bekommen wir keine.
Eine halbe Stunde später erreichen wir die Insel Koh Rong, die drei Wörter ruft: Paradies, Hippies und Party!

We walk around a little bit and figure that there are no actual roads on the island. You can get to the other villages by a taxi boat. Everything is pretty rustic and basic. The walls of our room end half way to the ceiling, the sink in the bathroom doesn't have its own drain and just trickles to the bathroom floor where it ends up in the shower's drain. Needless to say only cold water. Electricity cuts already are normal to us after 2 days.

This might sound bad now but you have to see it in relation to the development of the country/island.
All in all this island reminds me of Gili Trawangan in Indonesia a little bit, but in a better way. That's what I imagine Gili Trawangan was like before it became too much. I pray for this island to have a better future.

Meanwhile I enjoy this paradisiac island and try to catch up some calmness and joy from the people around! :)
That should be an easy task in that environment:

Wir spazieren ein bisschen auf der Insel rum und realisieren, dass es quasi keine Straßen gibt. Man kann mittels Taxiboot zu den anderen Dörfern fahren. Alles ist ziemlich rustikal und einfach. Die Wände unseres Zimmer reichen nur halb bis zur Decke, das Waschbecken hat keinen eigenen Abfluss und rinnt einfach auf den Badezimmerboden, wo es seinen Weg in den Duschabfluss findet. Klarerweise gibt's nur Kaltwasser. Stromausfälle sind nach 2 Tagen schon normal für uns.

Das klingt nun schlecht, aber man muss das in Relation zur Entwicklung des Landes/der Insel sehen.
Alles in allem erinnert mich die Insel ein bisschen an Gili Trawangan in Indonesien; allerdings in einer besseren Ausführung. So stelle ich mir Gili Trawangan vor, bevor es zu viel wurde.
Ich bete dafür, dass diese Insel einer besseren Zukunft entgegenstrebt.

In der Zwischenzeit genieße ich diese paradiesische Insel und versuche die Ruhe und die Freude der Leute um mich herum zu absorbieren! :)
