Travel Pro Tip #24: Buy Drinking Water for Three Cents a Liter in Thailand.
Hey there my steemit friends. Many of us believe life's basic necessities should be free especially clean air and water. Well, I'm still yet to find a country where anyone is enthusiastic about drinking free water from the tap. The world has gone to bottled water and for a good reason. Tap water around the world is full of chlorine and many other things that simply are not good.
Here in Thailand, a Buddhist nation with strong humanitarian values is the only country I've been to that has these reverse osmosis water dispensing machines speckled throughout neighborhoods in every town and city. Getting clean drinking water still is not free but for three cents it mind as well be. Just bring a bottle, and one baht (three cents) gets you a liter of very clean drinking water.
As a budget traveler I'm always looking for ways to extend my money. This isn't the most significant savings, when a liter at 7-11 cost about 50 cents; but every bit does add up. I would often buy a liter, then fill it up later in the day for one baht. By the end of the month that would save me 15 dollars. That's 180 dollars a year in savings. This trick combined with others and you now see how one if need be could live in places like Chiang Mai Thailand for as little as $200 a month.
Budget travel is not about bringing your standards of living all the way down to that of a poor local; but there is power in knowing you can survive on very little if times get rough. Thailand is one the best "pay less get more countries" in the world. It is common for locals to rent a small apartment for under $100 a month in various places throughout the country, that means you can too if need be.
I had fun wandering the streets of Chiang Mai while having this "Travel Tip" post in mind. I started photographing these water dispensers every time I saw them to share with my lovely fellow steemit members.
