The things you do for love

Hi, Servus - and welcome to my blog Travelling Around Austria with a Local!

I'm Theodora from Austria. Together with friends from abroad, I'm exploring my home country - and I talk about its beauty and its curiosities. The eighteenth episode will be about love - in a way. Well, mainly it will be about history, of course, as this is a part of my seven-episode-miniseries about Berndorf. But, you know, being a bit soppy in the side-plot won't hurt...

Once upon a time there was a business tycoon...

...and his name was Arthur. Arthur Krupp. In honour of his beloved wife Margarete, and because the other church in Berndorf had already become way too small for the many new inhabitants, he wanted to build St. Margaret's church (Margaretenkirche).

It is said that his wife Margarete fell ill and she couldn't attend mass, so Arthur built the church on the hill opposite the hill on which they had built their manor. The church was built so that when the doors were open, Margarete could attend mass from her home.

Nowadays, however, the manor is no more: The people of Berndorf plundered the house and burned it down right after World War II. Ironically, the hill is called "am Brand" ("by the fire").

Tips from a local

The church is an architectural gem - as are the schools. If you'd like to see the whole composition, make sure to visit the observation tower Franz-Bichler-Warte atop Guglzipf.

Beautiful church in a gorgeous setting! The surrounding roofs look orangey. Is that their real color?

It is! The whole arrangement was planned thoroughly. I believe that this is also true for the colours that were used. I've never given the roofs much thought, to be honest, but I'm pretty sure the architects did!
