[Travel/Tanzania] #1 House of peace, Dar as salaam[EN]
Hi lovely steemians!
@sunnyshiny is back with a new travel sketch.
I don't know if this photo is suit on main or not,
but just it is only one photo that I am in the scene at Dar es salaam.
I looks like I'm just standing on the way in my town not somewhere in Africa haha
Anyway,
eventually I'm writing my new story in ENGLISH!!
This post is continuing from below post.
[Travel/Kenya] Stop over, Nairobi in 10 hours
Though I did't spend a lot of time in Dar,
this city has its own culture and charm:-)
I'm just sad because I missed them.
1. LOCATION
I'm sorry that I put these maps in Korean.
Just I'm too lazy to make another screenshot....
Tanzania is a part of East Africa.
It is contacted with Indian Ocean by the east,
Kenya and Uganda by the north,
Rwanda and Burundy, and DRC by the west
and Zambia, Malawi(where I'm living), and Mozambique by the south.
Dar es salaam is the most popular port city,
and also the biggest city in Tanzania.
It was old capital, and not any more.
(The capital is Dodoma now)
The meaning of "Dar es salaam" is "House of peace"
You can google it by yourself, if you need more official information! haha
2. CURRENCY
They use Tanzanian Shilling(TZS)
On 3rd of Apirl, 2018
1USD=about 2,258.00TZS
If you read the post about Nairobi(this),
you can remember I had got the reward, 5,000KES(almost 50USD).
I used 3,500KES for a bottle of vodka,
And I failed exchanging my change to USD before I left Nairobi.
Because the house host was so much drunk!
Can you imagine what I did in Tanzania?
When I paid for something,
I used that 1,500KES(about 15USD) instead of 1,500TZS(about just even under 1USD)
So, guys, get the different wallet when you have different currency at the same time.
<Tip!>
When you try using ATM in Tanzania,
you should find CRDB.
This bank is charging the smallest fee on your card.
No matter how much you want to withdrawal,
they are charging same amount of fee.
The limit of CRDB was 2 times of the other banks, only as my experience.
CRDB charged 8,000TZS, but the other banks charged more than 8,000TZS which was same like 4USD.
Fortunately, when you don't have cash,
you can pay most of service or goods by USD.
So don't panic!
You will be ok to pay Ferry, taxi, hotel, and even activities.
3. TRIP SCHEDULE
I didn't spend much time in Dar,
My only one destination was ZANZIBAR,
I was there for only 4~5 hours on first day,
and 1 night before leaving Tanzania.
Total period of my travel was 13nights 12days including a night in Kenya.
21st December, 2017 ~ 2nd January, 2018
4. VISA
Fee is $50.
Cash and Card are acceptable:-)
I spent more than 30mins I think.
They took all the passport from visitors,
and gave them back at once.
Even my flight was postponed for 2 hours from Nairobi,
So I had to cancel an appointment at Dar,
because I was so much late.
5. NETWORK SERVICE
Internet is kind of necessary in these days.
I prefer getting local sim card to use only public wifi by the hotel or restaurant.
Because I need to check the map or transportation, when I'm moving.
`Also I don't like holding phone all the time when I need to chill down.
I visited Vodacom,
a sim was about 1~2USD, don't remember properly, but was not expensive.
This table was old information, even when I was there.
Just you can check how much you have to prepare to get internet roughly.
`If you want to get detail and exact information, google Vodacom :-)
6. Airport Taxi
The most honest taxi driver, Mr. Chenga.
Actually he is very known by Korean residents in Dar es salaam.
Because he keeps the time always,
and makes honest price of taxi fee.
And when I came out of the airport too late(almost 3 hours),
he was still there, waiting for me.
He has a Korean Flag on the back of his car!
This it a right way how to take a photo of the airport in a moving car.
Can you believe they have PIZZA HUT?
Because I don't have it in Malawi!
<Tip!>
Don't take any unofficial taxi.
Normal taxi which looks like a just a private car will steal your stuff.
My South African, healthy, big, young, and male friends were robbed by the taxi.
The taxi driver allowed 2-3 strangers to enter the car so suddenly,
and they brought my friends to a quiet ATM where was far from the town.
They threatened using knifes to get money and worth things like smart phone, or camera.
Get an airport taxi or Uber only.
7. ZANZIBAR FERRY TERMINAL
I arrived the terminal of ferry immediately,
since I've heard it was difficult to get a ticket just before departing.
Rapid ferry(One way)
Economy: $35 / VIP: $50
I booked a economy ticket for 2:30 pm, I had about 2 hours until my ferry.
And I went to an electronic shop to buy a memory card for my camera.
And decided to go to local market:-)
I forgot bringing the memory card...
8. LOCAL FISH MARKET
I've met a swedish guy in Malawi, who was traveling Africa,
he recommended to visit local fish market just next to the ferry terminal.
I love walking on my traveling.
Maybe because I don't feel comfortable with public transport,
but I think, I just like the air of the street.
`And just so tired of spending to much energy to negotiate the amount of transport in Africa.
Why I don't have these good bus stops and big bus in Malawi!
The street in front of ferry terminal
The church(maybe)
A tiny local restaurant under the main road
The market, eventually.
They have fresh fruits and vegetable,
Also these seefood snack!
I forgot the name of this fruit.
It was helping me to feel full enough!
Even I don't have this cute ice cream cart in Malawi....
I thought it was not that far,
but my bag was so much heavy under the sun of Africa.
Although I was exhausted of walking around, I could catch up my ferry on time.
9. SLIPWAY SHOPPING CENTER & THAI RESTAURANT
I spent my last night here with Japanese friends who I met in Zanzibar!
We could link up again in Dar es salaam.
They brought me to this place to show me Sunset,
because I wanted to see it.
Even if we missed it, I was enjoying the time with them!
I'm a big fan of Phat thai
I love Kilimanjaro beer!!
Even though it was just so short time in Dar es salaam,
I could make many lovely memories.
I will never forget this place
and the kindness of Mr. Chenga and my new friends from Japan.

그래도 영어 공부를 위해~ ^^*
I missed to meet you on your visit to Uganda...anyway i didn't know. Hope you will come back to our country.
I was not that active on steemit when I visited there! And actually my post about Uganda was the opportunity to communicate ugandan users:-)
Very nice travel story!!!
Unknown place, so I want to go there some time or other in my life.^^
I'm sure you will find here and explore even more than I did!

여행 가서 그것만큼 헉 하는 순간이 있을까요;;;;
