It all started with this view, this picture sparked our interest in the Azores Islands in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. And today the time has come: The final hike at Sete Ciddades is finally here!

How it all started…

We start early in the morning and drive from Nordeste to Sete Cidades. We park the rental car at the so-called kings view and start from there once around the whole crater.
The Vista do Rei lives up to its name – The view of the two crater lakes is simply breath-taking.

In the picture, you can see quite well what a huge hike awaits us – but we do not worry about that at first. The most important thing is to find the viewpoint of the first image we found on the internet. We are sure that we will find this panorama on the trail without much searching.
Well, wait and see...

First, we walk cheerfully along the trail. Past countless hydrangea bushes and impressive rock formations.

At this summit, we see a large group of tourists in the distance and wonder what is so special about this summit. But we don‘t think any longer about that.

We have always fabulous views on the way.

After several breaks, four hours and about 12 kilometers, we arrive at the lake. We still have not seen the great viewpoint and we are beginning to doubt our ability to read hiking maps.
A delicious avocado sandwich and a break in the sun give us strength again. We walk across the bridge, where both lakes unite (the different colours of the tow lakes are very impressive!) and have to walk a part of the tarred road towards the starting point of the hike. Originally, this was not our plan at all, but since we still had not reached the viewpoint after about 3 hours, we changed our route slightly, hoping that we would find the spot by hiking another way up.

As enthusiastic as we are about the hike and the views, we still haven’t found that spot, the viewpoint. And so, after 21 kilometres and 7.5 hours of walking, we are back at the Visto do Rei, quite exhausted and frustrated. Where the hell is this vantage point?

We start one last attempt by car and drive to Parque Lagoa do Canario. There we walk for half an hour moderately excited (we are very tired and hungry) through the forest and up a hill ....

And YEAHH!! Finally, we have reached our destination!!

The beautiful vantage point! Unbelievable, what an odyssey we have behind us! We are overjoyed to finally reach our spot and finish our trip to Azores with this view.

And do you know what's the best of the story? At the beginning of the hike, we walked blindly past exactly this Parque Lagoa do Canario, without suspecting anything! But we regret our great walk around the crater not a bit – the views and the paths are just too gorgeous!

The essentials:

• Visto do Rei – Wonderful view of both lakes
• Do not make it as complicated as we have! First go to Parque Lagoa do Canario, and then, do some hiking around the crater, e.g. around the lakes or have a ride down the valley to the small town of Sete Cidades.
• Plan a whole day!
• Take enough to drink and eat with you. You can probably buy something at Sete Cidades

Das Finale Highlight – und wo alles begann

Mit genau dieser Aufnahme hat alles begonnen, dieses Bild hat unser Interesse für die Azoren-Inseln im atlantischen Ozean geweckt. Und heute ist es endlich so weit: Die finale Wanderung bei Sete Cidades steht endlich an!
Wie alles begann…

Früh morgens starten wir und fahren von Nordeste nach Sete Cidades. Am sogenannten Königsblick parken wir den Mietwagen und starten von dort einmal um den ganzen Krater herum.
Der Vista do Rei macht seinen Namen alle Ehre – Der Ausblick auf die zwei Kraterseen ist einfach unbeschreiblich und atemberaubend.

Auf dem Bild sieht man eigentlich ganz gut, was für eine riesige Wanderung uns erwartet – aber darüber machen wir uns zunächst keine Gedanken. Das Wichtigste: Den Aussichtpunkt des ersten Bildes, auf das wir zufällig im Internet gestoßen sind, finden. Wir sind uns sicher, dass wir dieses Panorama ohne großes Suchen auf dem Wanderweg finden werden.
Nun ja, wartet mal ab…

Zunächst wandern wir munter los. An unzähligen Hortensienbüschen und beeindruckenden Felsformationen vorbei.

Auf diesem Gipfel sehen wir in der Ferne eine große Touristengruppe und wundern uns, was es auf diesem Gipfel wohl so besonderes gibt. Aber denken uns nichts weiter.

Unterwegs haben wir immer wieder sagenhafte Ausblicke.

Ozean im Hintergrund

Nach diversen Pausen, vier Stunden und ca. 12 Kilometern kommen wir vom Krater an das Seeufer. Den tollen Aussichtspunkt haben wir immer noch nicht gesehen, und langsam zweifeln wir an unserer Fähigkeit, Wanderkarten zu lesen.
Ein leckeres Avocado-Sandwich und eine Pause in der Sonne geben uns wieder Kraft. Wir laufen über die Brücke, an welcher sich beide Seen vereinen (die unterschiedlichen Wasserfarben sind sehr beeindruckend!) und wandern gezwungenermaßen einen Teil die Teerstraße hoch in Richtung Startpunkt der Wanderung. Ursprünglich war das überhaupt nicht unser Plan, aber da wir den Aussichtspunkt nach über 3h immer noch nicht erreicht hatten, änderten wir unsere Wanderroute etwas.

So begeistert wir auch von der Wanderung und den Aussichten sind, unser Ziel, der Aussichtspunkt, haben wir immer noch nicht gefunden. Und so kommen wir nach 21 Kilometern und 7,5 Stunden Wanderung sehr erschöpft und etwas frustriert wieder am Visto do Rei an. Wo zum Teufel befindet sich dieser Aussichtspunkt?

Wir starten einen letzten Versuch mit dem Auto und fahren zum Parque Lagoa do Canario. Dort wandern wir eine halbe Stunde mäßig begeistert durch den Wald und einen Hügel hinauf….

Und BÄHM!! Endlich haben wir unser Ziel erreicht!!

Der wunderschöne Aussichtspunkt! Unglaublich, was wir für eine Odyssee hinter uns haben! Wir sind überglücklich, endlich am Ziel zu sein und mit diesem Ausblick unsere Azorenreise zu beenden.

Und wisst ihr, was an der ganzen Geschichte das Beste ist? Wir sind zu Beginn der Wanderung blind an genau diesem Parque Lagoa do Canario vorbeigewandert, ohne etwas zu ahnen! Wir bereuen unsere tolle Wanderung um den Krater jedoch kein bisschen – die Aussichten und die Wege sind einfach zu genial!

Das Wichtigste in Kürze:

• Visto do Rei - wunderbare Aussicht auf beide Seen
• Macht es nicht so kompliziert wie wir! Einfach zum Parque Lagoa do Canario, im Anschluss eine beliebige Wanderung, z.B. um die Seen oder eine Fahrt ins Tal nach Sete Cidades.
• Einen ganzen Tag einplanen!
• Genug Proviant mitnehmen. Einkehrmöglichkeiten ggf. nur in Sete Cidades

Le point culminant final - et où tout a commencé

Tout a commencé avec cette vue, cette image a suscité notre intérêt pour les îles des Açores dans l'océan Atlantique. Et aujourd'hui, le moment est venu: la dernière randonnée aux alentours de Sete Ciddades est enfin arrivée!
Comment tout a commencé…

Nous nous levons tôt le matin et conduisons de Nordeste à Sete Cidades. Nous garons la voiture de location au soi-disant point de vue de roi et partons de là une fois autour du cratère.
La Vista do Rei porte bien son nom - La vue sur les deux lacs du cratère est à couper le souffle.

Sur la photo, vous pouvez très bien voir quelle énorme randonnée nous attend – mais cela ne nous inquiète pas au début. Le plus important est de trouver le point de vue de la première image trouvée sur Internet. Nous sommes sûrs que nous trouverons ce panorama sur le sentier sans trop devoir chercher.
Eh bien, attendez un peu...

Tout d'abord, nous marchons joyeusement le long du sentier. On passe près d'innombrables buissons d'hortensias et d'impressionnantes formations rocheuses.

Sur ce sommet, nous voyons un grand groupe de touristes au loin et nous nous demandons quelle est la particularité de ce sommet – sans trop y réfléchir.

Nous avons sans arrêt des vues fabuleuses en route.

Après plusieurs pauses, quatre heures et environ 12 kilomètres, nous arrivons au lac. Nous n'avons toujours pas vu le magnifique point de vue et nous commençons à douter de notre capacité à lire les cartes de randonnée.
Un délicieux sandwich à l'avocat et une pause au soleil nous redonnent de la force. Nous traversons le pont, où les deux lacs se rejoignent (les différentes couleurs des lacs sont très impressionnantes!) Et devons parcourir une partie de la route goudronnée vers le point de départ de la randonnée. À l’origine, ce n’était pas du tout notre plan, mais comme nous n’avions toujours pas atteint le point de vue au bout de 3 heures environ, nous avons légèrement modifié notre itinéraire, dans l’espoir que nous retrouverions cet endroit en prennant un autre chemin.

Aussi enthousiastes que nous soyons des vues et de la randonné elle-même, nous n’avons toujours pas trouvé cet endroit, ce point de vue. Ainsi, après 21 kilomètres et 7,5 heures de marche, nous sommes de retour au Visto do Rei, épuisés et frustrés. Où diable est ce point de vue?

Nous prenons une dernière tentative en voiture et conduisons au Parque Lagoa do Canario. Là, nous marchons pendant une demi-heure moyennement excité (nous sommes très fatigués et affamés) à travers la forêt et en haut d'une colline ....

Et BOUF! Enfin, nous avons atteint notre destination!

Le beau point de vue! Incroyable, quelle odyssée nous avons derrière nous! Nous sommes ravis d'arriver enfin à notre place et de terminer notre voyage aux Açores avec cette vue.

Et savez-vous quel est le meilleur de l'histoire? Au début de la randonnée, nous sommes passé aveuglément devant ce Parc Lagoa do Canario, sans rien nous douter! Mais nous regrettons pas notre grande promenade autour du cratère - les vues et les chemins sont tout simplement magnifiques!

L’essentiel:

• Visto do Rei – Magnifique vue sur les deux lacs
• ne pas faire la même bêtise que nous! Allez d’abord au Parc Lagoa do Canario, puis faites une randonnée autour du cratère, par exemple autour des lacs, ou faites un tour de voiture jusqu'à la petite ville de * Sete Cidades *.
• Prévoir une journée complète!
• Emmenez assez à boire et à manger avec vous. Si non, vous pouvez probablement acheter quelque chose à Sete Cidades.
