Next to the city of Baalbek-Lebanon there is a small village that has a few hundred of inhabitants and its well-known by its lake and nature reserve, the village of Yammoune.

The Yammoune village lies on a Fault line (a line on a rock surface our the ground that traces a geological fault) which is responsible for several historical earthquakes in the area.
In the year of 2010 a new section of the fault line was discovered, seismologists (scientists who does researches and studies for earthquakes) studied samples from the area that will allow them to improve dating on historical earthquackes and better predict future ones.

There you will find the ruins of a Phoenici-Greco-Roman temple where it said to be dedicated to Astarte or Venus, some specialists guessed that the temple might be of Phoenician origin, where part of its walls and foundations remain intact, it was constructed of large stones and ancient Greek inscription was found inside, also they found some inscriptions written in Latin at the temple site.
The temple is situated on a high about 300 m meters high from the main spring in the area.
It lies next to the lake that it was used from the ancients worshippers who took journey from the temple at Afqa to purify themselves in the temple wares.

Recently a broken cockleshell with a figure of a goddess with outstretched arms were found in the place.
There is no specific information about the Yammoune name of origin however archaeologist have suggested that it was the location of the festivals of Adonis.

Lake Yammoune is the home of Lebanon’s only endemic fish.
Due to the Phoenician Mythology, Astarte (goddess of fertility) turned herself into a golden fish in the Yammoune lake to escape from the vengeance of Typhon (brother of Adonis).
The lake is filled from a water cave next to the temple and it has only one outflow through a big hole.
“Marvin H. Pope” (Yale University) identified the home of “El” in the Ugaritic texts of ca. 1,200 BCE (the God “il” or “El” was the supreme God of Canaanites at the Bronze Age), and he described the lake as “ at the source of the two rivers, in the midst of the fountains of the two deeps”, this famous lake and Afqa are the source of Adonis river.

In the 1998 the village was classified as a scientific and cultural nature reserve and in addition to the lake it’s also known for its spectacular juniper trees and an amazing hiking area.

بالقرب من مدينة بعلبك-لبنان توجد قرية صغيرة تضم بضع مئات من السكان و هي معروفة ببحيرتها و محميتها الطبيعية، هي قرية اليمونة.

تقع قرية اليمونة على خط صدع (هو خط على سطح الصخور او الارض تتبع خطأ جيولوجي) و هو المسؤول عن العديد من الزلازل التاريخية في المنطقة.
في عام 2010 تم اكتشاف قسم جديد من خط الصدع حيث قام علماء زلازل بدراسة عينات من المنطقة التي من شأنها تحسين تحديد الزلازل التاريخية و ايضاً توقع افضل لزلازل محتملة في المستقبل.

هنا سوف تجد انقاض المعبد الفينيقي-اليوناني-الروماني خيق يقال انه كرّس لعشتار او فينوس، يعتقد بعض المتخصصين ان المعبد قد يكون من اصل فينيقي، حيث حيث هناك جزء من جدرانه و اساساته لا تزال سليمة، و كان قد شُيّد من الاحجار الكبيرة، و تم العثور على نقش يوناني قديم في الداخل، كما عثر على بعض النقوش المكتوبة باللغة اللاتينية في موقع المعبد.

يقع المعبد على تلّة بارتفاع 300 متراً من النبع الرئيسي في المنطقة الو جوار البحيرة التي كانت تستخدم من قبل المصلين القدامى الذين كانوا يرتحلون من المعبد في افقا لتنقية انفسهم في مياهه.
في الآونة الاخيرة تم العثور على قارب صغير مكسورة عليه نقش الهة مع ذراعين ممدودين.
لا توجد معلومات محددة عن اصل اسم اليمونة و مع ذلك فقد اقترح علماء الاثار انه موقع مهرجانات أدونيس.

بحيرة اليمونة تعتبر الموطن الوحيد فقط في لبنان للأسماك المتوطنة.
نسبةً للأساطير الفينيقية، عشتروت (آلهة الخصوبة) حولت نفسها إلى سمكة ذهبية في البحيرة هرباً من انتقام تايفون (شقيق أدونيس).
تمتلىء البحيرة من كهف مياه بجوار المعبد ولها تدفق واحد فقط من خلال حفرة كبيرة.

"مارفين ه. البوب" (من جامعة ييل) حدد موطن "إيل" في النصوص الأوغاريتية ca. 1,200 قبل الميلاد (الإله "إيل" أو "إل" كان الإله الأعلى "للكنعانيين" في العصر البرونزي)، ووصف البحيرة بأنّها "في مصدر النهرين ، في خضم ينبوعين عميقين "، هذه البحيرة الشهيرة و أفقا هما مصدر نهر أدونيس.

في عام 1998 تم تصنيف القرية كمحمية علمية و ثقافية طبيعية و بالاضافة للبحيرة فانها مشهورة ايضاً بأشجار العرعر المميزة و بكونها منطقة مذهلة لممارسة رياضة المشي لمسافات طويلة (هايكينغ).
