Adonis river God of Love-Chouwen نهر أدونيس إلاه الحب-شوان

In the area of Chouwen-Lebanon, you will find what is known as “the little paradise”, wich requires two hours of walking on legs to reach, the paradise of Chouwen.

It’s the no man’s land with it’s green nature crossed by the river of Ibrahim (Nahr Ibrahim) also know as Adonis river.

We can see ruins of an ancient temple, and a Roman aqueduct that crossed the torrent to convey its waters to the city of Byblos.

Every year the people of Byblos celebrate the death and rebirth of the young god of love Adonis (Phoenician Mythology said Adonis have been killed near the river by a boar sent by Ares, the god of war according to the myth, Adonis's blood flowed in the river, making the water reddish for centuries. In reality, the river flows red each February due to the volume of soil washed off the mountains by heavy winter rains, making it appear that the water is filled with blood.

Also legends say that the source of water at Afqa grotto (pours from a two-hundred meter high rock) was thought to be sacred and was protected by Ishtar or Aphrodite or Venus as she was variously named (the Goddess of Fertility).

This river is famous for having been at the heart of the ancient kingdom surrounding the city of Byblos.
The most impressive thing beside the special nature of Chouwen is the river that you can see surging down from distant deep ravines which dug for itself for hundreds of thousands of years ago.
It’s water comes as a form of cascade that rushing from the place of Afqa grotto (1,800 m) above the sea level passes through a huge gorge to the mountains and then down to the shoreline.

في منطقة شوان-لبنان تجد الجنة الصغيرة، والتي لاتستطيع الوصول اليها الاّ عبر السير على الأقدام لمدّة ساعتين، هي جنّة شوان.

هي أرض يمكن القول انها لم تطأها قدم بشرية من شدة جمالهاو خضرة طبيعتها كما و يعبرها نهر ابراهيم و الذي يعرف ايضاً بنهر أدونيس.

ستجد بقايا معبد و قناة مياه رومانية حيث كانت تضخ المياه الى مدينة جبيل.
في كل عام يحتفل الجبيليون بموت أدونيس (إلاه الحب عند الفينيقيين) و عودته إلى الحياة، الاسطورة الفينيقية تقول ان أدونيس قُتل بعد ان هجم عليه خنزير بري متوحش أرسله إلاه الحرب آرس حيث ان دم أدونيس اختلط مع النهر مما أدى إلى تحول النهر للون الأحمر لعدة عقود.
ولكن في الحقيقة أن النهر يتحول إلى اللون الأحمر في شهر شباط/فبراير بسبب اختلاط التربة الحمراء بالنهر من شدة المطر مشكّلة بذلك لون يشبه لون الدم.

و تقول الاساطير ايضاً ان النهر و الذي ينبع من مغارة أفقا من صخرة ارتفاعها 200 متر أنّ هذه الصخرة مقدّسة و كانت محمية من قِبل آلهة الطبيعة أفروديت و المعروفة أيضاً بأسماء عشتار أو فينوس.

هذا النهر يشتهر ايضاً لكونه قلب المملكة القديمة المحيطة بمدينة جبيل.
اكثر المشاهد روعةً في شوان الى جانب طبيعتها الخلابة هي هذا النهر الذي تستطيع مشاهدته يشق طريقه من ارتفاع هائل إلى الوديان العميقة منذ مئات الاف السنين، حيث تأتي مياهه من مغارة أفقا على ارتفاع 1,800 متر عبر ممر ضيق يوزع المياه إلى الجبال المحيطة وصولاً الى الشاطئ.
