Located on a 1,200 meters height above the sea level, next to the ancient city of Byblos, on the Mount of Lebanon. Where it got one of the best waterfalls in the mountains of the Middle east, and known in feeding Adonis River, also it forms the Legendary lake of El Yammoune, the village of Afqa in other words (Source).

As the Greek mythology tells that Adonis was given birth and also was killed at the foot of the falls in Afqa, where we can find the ruins of the temple of Aphrodite.
Due to the myth, Myrrha (mother of Adonis and daughter of Cinyras the king of Cyprus) she was transformed into a tree and after several months the tree gave birth to a child named Adonis. Where he was raised by Aphrodite (ancient Greek goddess of love and beauty), before she fell in love with him, resulting to grow the jealousy of her lover Ares (Greek god of war). That what led him to send a vicious boar to kill Adonis at the river.

The water fall of Afqa is the source for Adonis river which is located 200 m down forming an amazing natural scene.
The river arise from a big limestone cave in the cliff wall where the mountain’s melted snow transform into channels and released to the springs bellow.
The cave of Afqa (Afqa Grotto) has over 3 km known passageways inside with several springs that flow from it, as we will find a great temple lactated there.
Afqa is assiciated with tho worship of Aphrotdite and Adonis.

Sir James Frazer (one of the founding fathers of modern anthropology) describes the village at Afqa as:

“... the miserable village which still bears the name of Afqa at the head of the wild , romantic, wooded gorge of the Adonis. There is something delicious, almost intoxicating, in the freshness of these tumbling waters, in the sweetness and purity on the mountain air, in the vivid green of the vegetation”.

على ارتفاع 1,200 متر فوق سطح البحر وبجوار مدينة بيبلوس التاريخية، في جبل لبنان، هي البلدة التي تملك واحد من افضل الشلالات في جبال الشرق الاوسط، و المعروف في تغذية نهر ادونيس، كما و انها تشكل بحيرة اليمونة الاسطورية، هي قرية أفقا.

بحسب الاساطير اليونانية ان ادونيس قد وُلِد و قتل عند سفح شلالات أفقا. حيث نستطيع ان نحد بقايا معبد افروديت.
تقول الاسطورة ان ميرها (والدة أدونيس وابنة سينيراس ملك قبرص) قد تحولت الى شجرة و بعد عدة اشهر ولدت طفل يدعى ادونيس، فقامت افروديت (الاهة الحب و الجمال اليونانية) بالاعتناء به و ذلك قبل ان تقع في حبه، مما ادّى الى نمو الغيرة في قلب حبيبها اريس (اله الحرب عند اليونان)، فكانت النتيجة ان قام اريس بارسال خنزير فقتل ادونيس بالقرب من النهر.

شلال افقا هو مصدر نهر ادونيس والذي يقع 200 متر الى الاسفل ليشكل مشهد طبيعي مدهش.
ينبع النهر من داخل كهف حجري جيري كبير يقع على هاوية، و عند ذوبان الثلج يتحول الى قنوات مائية و منها الى ينابيع.

مغارة افقا لديها ممرات مكتشف منها 3 كم حتى الآن و يوجد داخلها العديد من الينابيع التي تتدفق منها، و ترتبط افقا مع عبادة افروديت و ادونيس من خلال ما يعرف بالمعبد الكبير.

السير جيمس فريزر (واحد من الاباء المؤسسين لعلم الانسان المعاصر) يصف قرية افقا على النحو التالي:
"لا تزال هذه القرية البائسة التي تحمل اسم افقا على رأس التوحش، الرومانسية و ممر ادونيس الخشبي. هناك شيء لذيذ، مسكِر تقريباً، في نضارة هذه المياه، في حلاوة و نقاء هذا الهواء الجبلي و في الخضرة الحيّة للغطاء النباتي".
