The historic city of Byblos مدينة جبيل التاريخية
In the Mount of Lebanon you will find a city which is believed to have been occupied since 8800 BC, this is one of the cities which said to be “as the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world”, a UNESCO World Heritage Site city, Byblos (Jbeil).
According to some historical sayings of Sanchuniathon (a semi-legendary Phoenician priest) Byblos was built as the first city in Phoenicia by Cronus (the leader and the youngest member of the first generation of Titans).
As a historical fact the word “Bible” is derived from “Byblos” the place where the Byzantine priests established their first edition of the sacred book.
The most common truth about the city name is the Canaanite words (Jbe i.e "the house") and (il i.e “the great god”) so the meaning of Jbeil would be (the house of God).
As it’s well known that the ancient Egyptians and the Mesopotamians invented the hieroglyphic and the cuneiform languages for the purpose of writing. The Canaanites combined the two systems and created their own language, which is the alphabetical system, making this city the homeland of modern alphabets. This information was discovered on the sarcophagus (a stone coffin) of Hiram (one of Byblos kings).
From about 7,000 years ago, Byblos have watched a lot of different Eras since the Neolithic period to the
Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, the Greeks, the Romans, the Byzantines the Arabs, Crusaders, Ayyubids and Mamluks to The Ottomans until the present days, where almost each one of them has left a historic memory in the city.

The foundations of the Great Temple, part of a Roman road, the main water source within the old city (known as the King's Eye), the remains of a human dominion from the Stone Age, remains of the old fort, in addition to a lot of other religious monuments and museums.
في جبل لبنان سوف تجد مدينة و التي يعتقد أنها كانت مأُهولة منذ عام 8800 قبل الميلاد، واحدة من المدن التي قيل بأنها "أقدم مدينة في العالم سُكنت بشكل مستمر"، مدينة صنّفت من التراث العالمي من قبل اليونسكو، جبيل.
وفقا لبعض الأقاويل التاريخية المنسوبة لسانشونياثون (و هو كاهن فينيقي شبه أسطوري) بنيت بيبلوس (جبيل) كأول مدينة في فينيسيا من قبل كرونوس (زعيم وأصغر عضو في الجيل الأول من الجبابرة).
كمعلومة تاريخية، كلمة "بايبل" استخرجت من "بيبلوس" المكان الذي أقام فيه الكهنة البيزنطيون طبعتهم الأولى من الكتاب المقدس.
والحقيقة الأكثر شيوعا عن اسم المدينة هي الكلمات الكنعانية (جبي أي "البيت") و (أي "إله العظيم") لذلك فإن معنى جبيل يكون (بيت الله).
كما هو معروف جيدا أن المصريين القدماء و سكان بلاد الرافدين قد اخترعوا اللغات الهيروغليفية والمسمارية لغرض الكتابة. فقام الكنعانيين الجمع ما بين النظامين وخلقوا لغتهم الخاصة، وهو النظام الأبجدي، مما يجعل هذه المدينة الأرض الأم للأحرف الأبجدية المعاصرة, حيث تم اكتشاف هذه المعلومات على التابوت الحجري لحيرام (أحد ملوك جبيل).
منذ حوالي 7000 سنة، شاهدت جبيل الكثير من العصور المختلفة بدايةً من العصر الحجري الحديث للآشوريين والبابليين والفرس والإغريق والرومان والبيزنطيين والعرب والصليبيين والأيوبيين والمماليك إلى العثمانيين حتى يومنا الحالي، حيث ترك تقريباً كل واحد منهم أثار تاريخية في المدينة.
بعض آثار مدينة بيبلوس (جبيل):
أثار الهيكل الكبير، جزء من الطريق الروماني، مصدر المياه الرئيسي داخل المدينة القديمة (المعروفة باسم عين الملك)، بقايا مستوطنة للإنسان من العصر الحجري، بقايا الحصن القديم، بالإضافة إلى الكثير من المعالم الدينية الأخرى والمتاحف.
