Lake Atitlan, Guatemala - One of the best places on earth!

in #travel6 years ago (edited)

When we moved to Guatemala while planning our homestead we made 4 trips to Lake Atitlan. We love Guatemala in general, but Lake Atitlan has to be one of the least known best places on earth. It's been known as the most beautiful lake in the world since being "discovered" by travelers in the 70's. It has an eclectic mix of Mayan indians, hippies and a few adventure tourists and backpackers.
It's a lake that's nearly 2000 ft deep with crystal clear water surrounded on the edges by 4 volcanoes.
There are no roads or cars in most of the villages around the lake and access is by foot path around the lake or taxi boats that will take you anywhere around the lake for $2.
There are many options to stay from $12 per night hostels to $300 per night high end lodges. We've tried them all on our many trips to the lake. I'm going to tell you about our favorites in no particular order..

La Casa Del Mundo - Definitely the best deal on the lake! Some very nice rooms with incredible views and food for $50 per night.

Laguna Lodge Eco Resort - Probably the most expensive place on the lake at $300 a night for the best room. It was my wife's birthday so I sprung for a weekend here. We will never forget it as it does not disappoint.

La Fortuna - Great place with little lodges in the trees. Around $100 per night. Beautiful main lodge, great food and relaxing dock. If you aren't a dog lover, you probably don't want to stay here. We took our dog with us to Guatemala so it was great that she had friends to play with here.

If you go visit Lake Atitlan make sure and research the villages around the lake to see which ones interest you the most. Each has a different flair. Try and see as many as you can but at least you'll know which ones you want to spend the most time in. The only really large town around the lake is Placencia. It's the only one the road goes thru and therefore has the most shopping, restaurants, etc. The others are really just small villages.

I love the idea of staying in a little lodge among the trees and exploring the lake and villages!

Do it! It's really incredible.
