The Big Island, Hawaii - My Master's wisdoms # 12-18

in #travel6 years ago (edited)

In April 2018 I took a trip to the Big Island, Hawaii. The purposes were personal and business but it turned out eventually that everything in life is interconnected. My travels along the beauties of nature brought me business encounters while my so-called more formal meetings were heart touching and caused my consciousness to expand.

Here I will detail some of my thoughts and muses about my trip. All photos (but the map, see at the end) were taken by me and are not allowed to be copied. If you wish to know about a specific location you are welcome to ask.

Enjoy!

Travel light

There are no direct flights from Israel to Hawaii and i used connections. The fact that I carried with me to the planes only a light backpack made my travels easy and comfortable.

The same goes when we walk our spiritual path. If we leave behind us the disturbing thoughts, the depressing memories, the heart-clenching emotions and make a bold choice to begin fresh and light, everything changes and becomes easier.

Be your own guide

kamehameah.jpg

I could have hired a private guide or join one of the many organized group-trips. But my nature is to plan by myself and execute on my own pace. And once I made that decision, the energy aligned itself to serve me, and I found a great application that served as a private tour guide who accompanied me throughout the excursions.

Many people will tell you how to live your life (including yours truly), but the best and only source you should follow is your own heart and soul.

Come unprepared

Villa Kona.jpg

The only confirmed plan I had was some work-related activities and a meeting place. I knew that everything else would be sorted out, including the people and the events I needed to experience. In fact, the helicopter ride that I initially had desired to do and prepared my-self towards, eventually did not take place due to weather conditions.

I remind myself this lesson often when I am facing a new challenge in life. The wider brush I paint with, the more I trust my self, the more amazing the results are. Try it.

Set one goal

The Big Island is about its nature. You will rarely find here sandy white beaches or sparkling, shining celebrities - The Hawaii 5-0 TV series is filmed in Honolulu, on the neighboring island, O'ahu. So nature it is and I tried my best to capture most of it. I drove in three days a total sum of 1260 km, hiked 25 km, and still didn't see everything. When I reached the volcanos national park I knew I would have to focus on one route. And so I did.

In the scriptures it is said - make your eye single and the meaning is to stay focused. There are so many temptations around us and it's almost impossible to choose. Once you stay focused on your enlightenment, everything else falls into its right place and at the right time.

Allow time for relaxation

I am an expressive person. When I do not create something - be it a quality conversation with someone, a project at work, or doing something with my hands - I feel a lack. On the one hand, it means that I have an active soul who doesn't give me much rest. On the other hand, it's tiring. The Hawaiian atmosphere forced me to change the mood. Everything there happens slowly, at its own pace. The max speed limit, for instance, is 55 mph (88 kph). In all my driving there I never heard even once a car horn!

We must learn to sit back, relax, and enjoy our achievements. In such reflecting restful moments, important integrations happen and plans for the future are being woven.

Allow time to yourself

To Hawaii, I traveled alone, just me. I knew that I would spend the first several days with associates, doing intensive personal and professional tasks, and for the rest of the stay, I trusted that I would pair-up with the appropriate people. It turned out that except for short brief encounters, I was by myself for the whole period, travel and leisure time alike. And it was good, excellent. Gaia, the goddess of earth, showed me its wonders and in return received my unconditional love.

So many people are afraid of being alone. They fear the devastating emotion of loneliness. They fear their own thoughts. But in traveling and life in general, it's much better to be alone with just yourself than with the wrong person. And besides, no one is really never alone, and I will explain more about this in another post.

Keep it simple and Stupid

Although Hawaii is a state in the USA, the Hawaiian way of life is different from the "Amerian dream" over-achievement, sophisticated patterns. The fact that the islands of Hawaii are so far away from any mainland, thousands of KMs from the USA, Japan or Australia, makes Hawaii the most isolated populated area on Earth and allows the island to have its own energies. And you feel it right away on the Big Island. I mentioned the pace, this is one thing. The other is the simplicity, kindness and open-heart approaches that the commons have towards tourist and foreigners. Everywhere I went - at the supermarket, gas station, national park, the hotel, the gardener, the landlords, the lady that helped me find smoked salmon, to name just a few - 9 out of 10 people were kind. In fact, in Hawaii, they have a special hand-gesture for drivers and pedestrians to thank each another. It's called the Shaka.

Keep life simple and in particular your journey towards your enlightenment. Being intelligent, having a sharp mind with great memory will not get you through because enlightenment cannot come from your mind. Trust me on this, I have tried using my mind (and I write about the road and its consequences in my "from a slave to a master" weekly posts).

First I must tell you, you got the gift and skills with the camera. I seems not to be lucky in that aspect, so I appreciate a good photo just as I appreciate a good art.

I love the way you connect everything around you to your journey in life. Everything in the universe appears to you as some sort of life lessons to draw energies from. In that way, it's more fun to you and much easier to be happy as you consider anything to be some form of communication to you. If many were to see life this simple, the lots of depression and suicidal tendencies we have in the society today would have been driven down.

I'm glad you had a great time through your journey. Do enjoy the rest of your days on this planet.

Same here, traveling alone is time efficient and no complicated decisions, you decide for yourself, though people are not comfortable traveling alone, but i get used traveling alone. The pictures you took seems like a professional photographer what camera did you use? BTW seems like you enjoyed your trip with the business meeting at the same time enjoying yourself over there no doubt it's a worth of a trip. thanks master @nomad-magusfor sharing your travel in Hawaii it made me think going over there too. :)

The fact that I carried with me to the planes only a light backpack made my travels easy and comfortable.

Just like you mentioned “everything interacts”.
Hawaii is a beautiful island 🌴 and the people are sooo friendly. I do agree with you on going your own way, not the guided way. I used to be this way before I met my wife. Just the straight line, just the way majority does it. Until this person appeared in my life. She always takes the other way, more adventures and unpredictable way. I went along with it and sometimes she is surprised when I take the lead.

I drove in three days a total sum of 1260 km, hiked 25 km

That’s a lot in three days.
People from Hawaii remind me the place where I lived for some time before I moved to New York. People are waving to each other, saying hello even though they see each other for the first time. I was surprised how many people wanted to help me with any kind of situation. NY is completely different. This, I get reminded just by driving the car. If you don’t move a second after green light, everyone goes nuts. I don’t travel alone, I don’t think I would enjoy it as much as traveling with my other half even though you do recomend to travel alone. However, our friend travels just by herself and she really enjoys it. Just recently she visited London.
Thank you for sharing you travel experience and amazing interactions.
BTW: photos are 🤔...one word “יפה”

Thank you. Always good to read your practical testimonials 👍

Before I went to Vietnam, some friends talked me into going to the big island of Hawaii first. And from there flying to Vietnam. It had a good ring to it. Hitchhike around the big island for a couple of weeks before heading to my first foreign country.

I had forgotten though, how rusty my hitchhiking thumb was. That’s not because I’m predisposed to arthritis either. In my late twenties my hitchhiking adventures tapered off greatly then stopped.
I landed at the Kona airport at night, walked south towards Kona, and found a place to camp that wasn’t jagged lava rock. My first morning on the island I was woke by the bite of a centipede on my elbow. It felt like a hot fire flash through my arm with a pain a bit more intense than a bee sting. I don’t think I’ve ever woken up and gotten out of my sleeping bag faster than I did that day.
I remember my first day I met some hostile young locals. An extremely hostile homeless man who I thought was going to start fighting me. I got within 50 feet of “his spot” at a public park and said “Excuse me sir, you know what is down this way?”. But I finally found an OK couple of home-bums down along the beach that let me camp next to them.

Wow this is a well documented trip and I love what you have done with the analysis and descriptions and the way you linked each experience and encounter with a moral lesson and I will try my best to chip in my view on each of your moral lessons.

The same goes when we walk our spiritual path. If we leave behind us the disturbing thoughts, the depressing memories, the heart-clenching emotions and make a bold choice to begin fresh and light, everything changes and becomes easier.

Talking about travelling light and how it applies to spirituality. I will be talking in terms of forgiveness. Many people don't know how good it is to forgive anyone who offends us. Forgiveness means dropping the heavy weight you are carrying and having a lighter one to continue with your journey. This was the light I caught from this.

Many people will tell you how to live your life (including yours truly), but the best and only source you should follow is your own heart and soul.

We should learn to live a life of non conformity. We are all unique in our own way but we are always distracted by the things around us that we get so confused and feel following the crowd is the only way out which is not

The Pachamama welcomes you with open arms to give you those beautiful lessons that you are sharing.

When you talked about loneliness I felt good because I always like to be in company and I am afraid of myself, that tip I will begin to apply to my daily life to stop stressing when i'm alone..

Beautiful post and a hug.

Beautiful scenery of beautiful results. photo the natural beauty that has brought you to get a beautiful dream every night. You are a very lucky person, because you have seen what I can not see in my life.I have never seen this scene it's amazing. Thank you guys for sharing, I hope someday to visit such a beautiful place even if it is not possible for me @nomad-magus

So many people are afraid to be alone. They are afraid of the destructive feelings of loneliness. They are afraid of their own thoughts. But in the course of life and life in general, it is much better to be alone with yourself than with the wrong person. And besides, no one is really never alone, and I will explain more about this in another post.

I have experienced this feeling that loneliness and isolation are not practical things like medicine, but do play an important role in one's health. In social life, people who feel lonely may be less involved with the health community or the wider community, therefore be less self-care. Finally I have to rise up and fight my loneliness for a better tomorrow

You have taught me a lot about life, relationships and attitudes. I am very motivated by you and will await your explanation for this.
Thanks for this @nomad-magus

The Big Island is the largest and most exciting of all Hawaiian islands. The island stills grows every day because of its tourist attraction (which also happens to be one of the most active volcanoes in the world): the Kilauea volcano. The Big Island is an island with so much beautiful nature and so many cool activities that it is almost impossible to fit everything in your vacation – even if you stay more than a month. I want to go this beautiful place. Thanks @nomad-magus for share and advice.
