Marriage and Unity Sand

It is quite popular in the USA for couples to light a unity candle in a wedding ceremony. This is to symbolise the union of the bride and groom becoming one in commitment.

Recently, I attended a beachfront wedding ceremony in the afternoon followed by dinner in the evening when the sun has gone down. So beautiful and romantic.

I was surprised to see a carafe and 2 tall glasses containing coloured sand placed centre stage. The mother of the groom explained that the sand was to replace the unity candle.

The couple decided on sand because the sea breeze might just repeatedly blow out the candle during the ceremony. Wise choice.

The groom wanted blue as that's his favourite colour and also represents the colour of the sky and sea. The bride opted for red since both these colours contrast and coordinate so well together. The coloured sand was prepared back home while the neutral sand collected from the beach just before the ceremony.

As the newlyweds pour the sand into the vase, the coloured grains of sand blend into a new colour to signify the blending of both families into a new family. And as the couple commence their journey into marriage as husband and wife these grains of sand symbolize love, strength and commitment.
