Switzerland - First Impressions

in #travel6 years ago

Thanks for joining me in my adventures. This blog is dedicated to travels off the beaten path. You won't find my review of Disney World here, but you might just discover a new way to explore your world. If you're a fan of the road less traveled, I think you'll like what we have in store today.

The Swiss Alps

To the left is the tiny country of Liechtenstein, to the right is the giant Switzerland. The mountains themselves tell of the size disparity between the two countries. Most of us have never heard of one while the other is world famous for all sorts of things - Swiss chocolate, Swiss army knives, banking, the Red Cross. With only a couple days to spend here, we intend to make the most of it.

The road to the hotel is long and edged with stunning mountains providing a lush green counterpoint to the intensely blue sky. The Swiss have a practicality that is evidenced even in their roads - when a mountain gets in the way of their path, they simply go through it. The tunnels were never-ending, twisting through the mountains as they curve around the lake to our North.

As we approach our destination, the land opens to reveal a rich tapestry dotted with homes, trees, and fields. The Swiss have built their homes in the flattest parts of the country they found, which still leaves them dotting rolling hills in high valleys. In the distance, what appear to be far off clouds reveal themselves, on closer inspection, to be an even larger mountain range looming over the horizon itself.

Switzerland promises to be a fine adventure, and it's only just began. Thank you for joining me along the way. What fine adventures have you gotten yourself into? Let me know in the comments. For help booking your first (or twentieth) fine adventure, find me at Travel Life Services.

Switzerland is a beautiful (but expensive) place! I hope you will have time to explore the mountains!

Oddly enough, I just left Switzerland, probably just as you were arriving! Maybe we passed each other on the road!

I have featured you and this post for a curation contest for @pifc here:

Many thanks for featuring me! What was your favorite part about Switzerland?

Oh the Alps, great pics..gonna visit em this November

That's exciting. What part will you be visiting?

We don't know yet. Will be renting a car..so flexible.
Any suggestions?

Well, I loved the Austrian Alps. Are your countries flexible or will you be specifically in Switzerland? As it turns out, the Alps stretch across a considerable part of Europe.

And PS I'm a travel agent... if you are curious as to how I can save you money and boost your adventure, hit me up on discord. Same name there. 😀

And I think renting a car is the way to go for sure. Your trip will be much more flexible that way.

We land in Germany and go to Croatia, but not directly...so we don't know what route to take. I think we will leave it for the last moment. That way it is much more interesting.
If ya have some must see we will put on the list for sure..

I absolutely adored Austria. There was a wildness about the mountains that is difficult to describe. So pick any mountain in the Salzburg region of Austria and spend a few hours hiking. The ice caves were pretty spectacular; they are also near Salzburg. You can read more about them here. Depending on where you land in Germany, The Cologne Cathedral was pretty spectacular, but is likely out of your way. I still haven't gotten around to writing a post about the inside of the cathedral, but I will, someday.

Are you familiar with the vignettes that you will need for traveling through different countries? Coming from the US, that was a surprise to me.

And yes, last minute planning is tons of fun, but it's nice to have a skeleton idea of what you want to do too. :-)

Wow have to say I love that first photo, it feels so iconic :D I've never been to Switzerland but sounds like a lovely to place to visit :) looking forward to seeing more.

Thanks, it is certainly a beautiful country. It was hard to NOT find an iconic image of that place. Everything is so very picturesque there. It's like a postcard everywhere I look.

Nice photo! I like Switzerland. My wife and I like road less traveled too. Thanks for your share!

Thanks for dropping by! I'm sure you have plenty of stories from your roads less traveled as well. Are you posting them somewhere?

I am a new steemian. I just have two posts on steemit. I will keep to update my post in the future.

Welcome to steemit! I look forward to seeing your posts!

Thank you for sharing @mattifer :)

Golly gee, I'll take this over Disney any day. No crowds, no admission fee, no screaming children. Yep, this is my speed! :-)

Thanks for dropping by!

Yeah screaming children, that's the clincher :)

Every time. 😀

Your post fills me with great jealousy @mattifer. You are so privileged!

@reonlouw It really was an opportunity I never thought I'd have. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Now let's work on getting you out there on your own adventure! :-)

Holy mac&chz! Those are some seriously amazing mountains! We have seen the Rockys in the distance, but they are nothing compared to those!!! Wow!
Ren

Thanks! Yes, they were quite impressive! I only wish I'd gotten the chance to crawl all over them up for a week or ten. :-) Thanks for dropping by. I wouldn't be surprised if we cross paths someday here in the States. I'm heading to Oregon in a week or so. Where are you off to next?

I totally get that "week or ten" comment. I feel that way with all the traveling. I would so be right there with you. haha.

We are staying close to Oklahoma for the most part because of family issues. We try to get out to some of the surrounding states. Just last week we went to Ouachita National Forest to see some of the Arkansas Waterfalls. Hoping to go to Georgia though in late December. Waiting to see what the weather has for us.
