Norway and Iceland cruise

in #travel7 years ago
Five years ago I went on my first cruise holiday to Norway and Iceland. Cruising is not my cup of tea but that time was an exception as it was a big family holiday with 15 close family members. I have five siblings and apart from one who works in Hong Kong and myself who used to live in London, everybody else lives in the West of England. It is quite tricky for all of us to get together so to be able to spend 10 fantastic days together with our partners and 4 of the kids made it even more special for everyone.

Norway and Iceland have been on my hit list for quite some time, both are absolutely beautiful countries and the trip did not disappoint me. The dramatic Fjords and glaciers in Norway completely took my breath away; whilst I was immensely impressed by Iceland’s sustainability and its geological landscape created from volcano activities in the past.

In Iceland we did a private tour where we found out a lot about the local culture and history, as well as some interesting facts. Did you know that in Iceland you cannot pass on your surname to your children? If a man’s name is Sturla, then his son’s surname will be Sturluson and his daughter’s Sturludottir ie the son and daughter of Sturla respectively!

Although the scenery was mesmerizing, my most cherished moments from the holiday was the valuable time I spent with my family. We all are very blessed and old enough to get on very well with one another and not waste time squabbling over silly things like we used to do when we were young. So although I’m not keen on cruising, the 10 days flashed by really quick. Now that I have moved to Taiwan, I see even less of my family in UK. Fortunately, distance doesn’t matter anymore in this modern world when we have Skype, social media and photographs. More importantly, I have so much great memories of this holiday that are non erasable.

You are so near to them now! Highly recommended

15 close family members
what a big family!

5 siblings, your parents must have been very hard!

Your English is getting a huge progression! The word “siblings,” I just know it a couple weeks ago! 😎

Well, you know what they say, in the old days there was no TV, so nothing to do in the evenings 😊
15 is just half of my close family. I have :
5 siblings + partners = 12 +
9 nieces/nephews + 3 partners = 24 +
4 3rd generation babies = 28 in total in my family 😊

Norway is such a beautiful country, I have been travelling there this summer. I think we did the same hike in Geiranger, I got almost exactly the same photo :D
Yesterday I found this amazing photo post on Steemit, makes me want to go there even more: https://steemit.com/landscapephotography/@for91days/27-amazing-aerial-photos-of-iceland-before-drones-got-popular

I think everyone who goes on a cruise takes the same photo, I've seen it from quite a few friends as well. Would love to do some hiking in hiking as unfortunately cruising doesn't take you to that many places

Haha, that might be true.
I was travelling with a friend and near the viewpoint we met another German guy, so the three of us did a 2-day hike in the end, the view from the top of the mountain was out of this world and there was nobody else there!

I've never been there but it's definitely on my bucket list! The northern lights are calling me.

The only thing that just puts me off is the weather.. D: Lovely pictures though!

I didn't see the northern lights this time as I went in July, but I did see the midnight sun which is the last photo.

I shall look forward to your world journey posts. Are you aware of the Steemit World Map? Check it out, as a traveller, I'm sure you will love it. Someone from our team will bound to come round to spam you sooner or later, so I might as well do it now!

The midnight sun must feel super weird too by the way. Never seen it myself either, but I am already confused when it's still dark outside at 8AM, hehe.

Thank you! And yes I am. I will probably link my posts on there as soon as I start travelling. Might come in handy for other users!

Oooh, you're part of the team of Steemit Worldmap? :D

Norway is beautiful, I have been there and amazed by the view...

Wow @livinguktaiwan
You really catching a Lotta fun over there. Enviable travels! And that's some really funny stuff about how surnames are passed in Iceland! What a culture! Hahah.

Apparently that used to be the case in all the nordic countries thats why many of their surnames end with 'son' but only Iceland continues with this tradition now

OK, cool.
