Castle ruins and my favourite izakaya in Okinawa

in #travel6 years ago
Last time I mentioned two other castles in Okinawa, the Shurijo Castle near Naha, and the Nakijin Castle remains near the Churaumi Aquarium. Let's go there today!

Shurijo Castle is the most famous and intact castle in Okinawa, its also very close to the centre and is accessible by public transport so attracts a lot of visitors.

On my trip there, there was some sort of celebration going on, and since I'm the type of traveller who doesn't do any research beforehand (and afterwards in this case), I had no idea what was happening. Anyway, there were a group of people there, some had drums and others were balancing a massive pole using their belt as a support. I could tell it wasn't easy, so hats off to the guys for a fantastic performance.

After the celebration, I wandered around the castle for a while, Being in the center there wasn't much view so to speak, so I left quite soon.

Nakijin Castle remains on the other hand was located up on the hills, and has a magnificent view. It was built around the 13th century and is a World Heritage site.

okin304.jpg

There are no buildings left on the site now as they've all been destroyed by the wars over the years. Those markers on the ground represents where dwellings would have been back in the days.

okin305.jpg

What remains of the castle is just a 1.5m km wall that runs around the site. From this direction, you can see the East China Sea. If you keep going straight ahead for another 800 km, you will eventually get to Shanghai. To get to Tokyo from Okinawa you have to travel 1500km!

Apparently, if you come at the right time of the year, you get a great cherry blossom viewing, though of course I had no such luck. All I saw was what's left of this stunning fortress, so I'm not complaining.

I'm going to leave you with my absolute most favourite restaurant in Okinawa. I have written about this in the past, in fact it was my sixth post on Steemit, but I think it deserves another mention because its so good.

This restaurant is an izakaya (an informal Japanese pub) called 大衆御苑足立屋 and is nestled down a little alley way at Nago. Here it is on the right hand side.

There is no English of even Chinese menu here, and everything is written on the board. Since Japanese use Kanji (Chinese characters) in their language I could guess some of the dishes but had no idea what some of the ingredients were or how it was cooked. For example, the first item on the menu below says 'since the beginning of the business' so if something has been on the menu since day 1, I figure its got to be good.

And here it is. It turns out its braised pork knuckle, looks simple but that's the beauty of it. A simple dish that stands the test of time.

So all night long, I just looked left, right and center picking out random things from the menu.

My verdict? Nothing disappointed me at all. My evening was full of little surprises that's why its my most favourite restaurant.

Sort:

great blog, I would really like to visit okinawa, didnt have a chance to go there yet!
Good to see there is a lot of culture to find there also!
The food looks delicious!

Its quite different from the rest of Japan, so would be a great contrast.

Makes me even more curious ;-) Thx again for the nice blog!

Excellent post! I like that "If an item has been on the menu since day one, it must be good"

Thanks for the photos, one day I have to bring my wife to Okinawa.. she was born there!

That would be really nice to go back to her birthplace, I take it she hasn't been back for a long time?

No they left when she was barely two, and never went back!

We only been to the more touristy Shuri castle. But did not really enjoy it that much.
The Nakijin castle you went looks like more fun! With nice views of the sea.
Yeah I think travelling japan is easier for us chinese, we can guess from the Kanji.

I wasn't too impressed with Shuri Castle either, bar that performance.

Wow that izakaya looks so amazing, sure looks like a super local spot - though must be difficult to order things despite the kanji similarities. But I guess it's not so bad if you eat everything! I don't eat meat so that could be a little more complicated for me 🙈

In that case just enjoying the unique surroundings is just as fun. The other thing I did in another restaurant was to peek at the next table and order what the locals were eating !

Oh I bet, but izakaya's are so fun. I went with a Japanese friend in Tokyo and that was super handy because she could read the menu :P Hahaha, classic! Probably the easiest way when you don't have the benefit of having a Japanese friend. I also always try to learn how to say 'I don't eat meat but I eat seafood' in the language of every country I go to as that way they can just recommend things and I can (hopefully) trust them.

(Apparently 叉燒 is a vegetable and sausages grows on trees sometimes...)

@livinguktaiwan just use your google translate for the hiragana next time. It usually works good enough.

Google couldn't recognise my hiragana writing nor when I tried to screen cap the menu
Probably need a new phone 😁
