Tips on exploring Gran Canaria. Part II - Día de Canarias.

in #travel6 years ago

There is no doubt that in Gran Canaria, you can have fun any day of the week. Will it be lounging at the beach, having a cocktail with a tiny umbrella in it, a boat party or sightseeing trips, there is always something that you can potentially do. There is also a carnival in February/March that is wild and out of control. But we are not going to talk about that. Why? Because it does not show you the true local culture and the fun people have when they celebrate the Islands. Plus, it is by no means family friendly even if it is so very fun. Día de Canarias takes place on May 30th, the time when there are not many tourists on the island.

It is a fun event with carousels and popular music. But the real magic is when you reach for that local food. There are a lot of things happening everywhere, on all of the islands, but they all have something in common. Those amazing dishes and snacks! On Av. de Tejeda in San Fernando, Maspalomas it is no different. Even though it is a tourist town, it is also great for celebrating Día de Canarias. There is nothing fancy, just a street full of carousels and games that are meant for all age groups. Then there is some music, Spanish and English, depending on the attraction you choose.

But then there come Churros. There are many of these all over the place. Hell, I can even find some here, in Germany. But the thing is, no matter how many I have tried, they taste that amazing only in one place and that is in Maspalomas, during the Día de Canarias. When the Churro car rolls out there, the vendors do not feel bad about charging a little extra and I do not mind paying it because it is well worth it. These special churros are filled with chocolate, caramel, or vanilla (not sure about the last one). They are big and soft. And yes, they are greasy, but once in a while, they are well worth it and will not kill your figure or health!

I, unfortunately, do not have a picture of them as I did not think to take one, I was too much into those pastries. Also, Día de Canarias only takes place once a year but there are celebrations around 3 to 5 times in a year. Then the tents and food carts are set up again. There are more events than this one and if you are on the Island, you should keep your eye out for them! They are an amazing insight into the local culture and celebratory attire. For example, there is a celebration that moves from town to town, each week. That is when Canarians celebrate their districts. You can hear live music here, have a good dance well into the night, and dress up in long skirts and traditional shirts.

Waiting for service and food

Without Churros, there are also smoked ribs made on a grill, Canarian potatoes, Mojo and Allioli sauces, Tapas, various meats, and sausages, and so much more. When you get to go on these trips to different lands and see how they celebrate, you are usually let with new memories to cherish and fresh food flavors to long for, and maybe even try out to make for yourself.

Also, make sure that you show up semi-early, around 7 PM, if you would like to get any ribs at all. They get ordered out very fast and those who come later just have to make due with some local sausages and chicken. Also, the waiters might be busy so you will have to be able to get their attention.

Overall, I would say, you should count on two to three hours on spending on the street of fun. Depending on if you like carousels and if you have kids, and some money to throw at these attractions. There is mostly the usual stuff, cars, bull, the thing that goes around, vertically, in the air, at high speed. A lot of games. A lot of paper on the street that will get cleaned up in the morning. But also enough trash cans to not litter around.

You can even dance on the street if you feel like it. Canarians are quite open and mind their own business. Well, maybe they do like looking around a little bit but they do not think that a lot of other people are crazy, as they, themselves, have a little bit of that wild spark.

Also, this place always has a lot of things for kids. There are mini cars, mini bulls, a lot of colorful mini carousels. Oh, and a horror-themed Tres Brujas (Three Witches) attraction in which some people dress up as witches and scare children. Not too much, even though my companion, the boy in the picture above, was way too scared of the guys wearing witch costumes. For a while, after they joked with the boy, he started smiling and messing with them, too. It was a fun evening even though I did not go on the carousels this year (on a budget, remember?). I love attractions of all sorts but this visit I skipped them. For the next time, I want to bump into somebody with those fun cars. You know, like in the childhood!

This is the right place to go with a family too. The adults can have a snack or full dishes while the kids are going to be preoccupied. There are too many colorful and shiny things for them not to be. Balloons, toys, blinking lights, and moving trains. Also, football-themed games as Spanish people love football. And, no it is not called soccer! Not where I come from :D.
