Visiting Purah Tanah Lot, Bali, Indonesia
Hello Steemians,
In this post, I am going to talk about Purah Tanah Lot, an ancient Hindu pilgrimage temple, in Bali, Indonesia, which I visited back in July 2009.
Purah Tanah Lot is visited by many people throughout the year, and it's one of the best-known temples in Bali; maybe because it's so photogenic.
Tanah Lot means "Land in the Sea" in Balinese. The rock on which the temple lies is still being shaped by the ocean tide, and it looks so much different on high tide than on low tide. When I visited, it was low tide.
According to legend, Purah Tanah Lot was built in the 16th-century by Dang Hyang Nirartha, who after spending a night on the little island, decided to build a shrine on the rock, in honour of the Balinese sea gods.
It is also believed, that venomous sea snakes at the base of the island protect the temple from evil spirits and intruders (1).
There was also a photo opportunity for tourists with one of the temple's deadly sea snakes;
For some reason, I didn't take many photos in Purah Tanah Lot. I did take a couple of videos though;
And that's the end of this post. I hope you liked it, and that you will follow me to my next one.
So, have a good day, and we'll speak again soon!
