St Kilda, South Australia.
Located 45km north of Adelaide's CBD, the small beach township of St Kilda offers a few - mostly free - attractions to keep local guests entertained. I say local because people wouldn't travel ages to get here, nor would I recommend they do so.
Majority of the beach frontage here is sludgy and sea-weedy, with a very unpleasant smell. There is a small marina and boat ramp that leads to a narrow channel about a kilometre in length. A $6 fee applies to launch your boat there, and primarily Bream and the occasional salmon can be found here if you're lucky. Its a good crabbing spot. While turning over rocks and looking for baby mud crabs along the coast as kids sufficed, raking for blue crabs can be quite enjoyable and lucrative for the whole family - especially during the warmer months.
If you visit St Kilda during winter, there are a few entertainment options away from the brisk beach. Of course, there is the adventure playground, which has recently be renovated and can entertain families all day long. But there are a few other gems like the mangrove trail or the tramway museum.

Mangroves are a vital ecosystem that divide the land and sea. Without mangroves, high tides would gradually erode land while many prawns, fish, and crabs' livelihoods depend on these delicate ecosystems. At 700m long, the Mangrove trail is a 45 metre return walk. There are benches, small huts, and informative signs along the way to keep you engaged. Despite the distinct smell, the walk is quiet tranquil and I found learning about the biodiversity of this delicate biome interesting.
The path is currently being repaired. Nonetheless, we went off the beaten path and the walk was abruptly ended by this fallen tree.
The view from the lookout is primarily green, blue and more blue. You can make out Adelaide's humble CBD in the distance, but my phone camera couldn't see that far.
Here is the learning centre. The smell of old - one only comparable to museums - filled our nostrils as we walked in and observed its emptiness. The council built it a few years ago and have since forgotten about it.
A few food options around St Kilda include ice cream from a stall near the playground, the St Kilda Hotel, and the tackle shop. They're all reasonably priced and fine for a lunch with the family. The St Kilda Hotel has a venue room for 200 people and offers a pretty solid Snitty'. If you're visiting the playground for a day out, a packed lunch is probably the way to go.
St Kilda is one of those places you can visit once and forget about it for a few years. Whether you're a bored teenager in Adelaide's Northern Suburbs, or a family seeking a cheap day out during the holidays, it's a decent local destination. Perhaps the most notable thing about St Kilda are some of the impressive blue crab yields that people make during summer.
Sadly I didn't take my camera with me on this occasion. Hence, all photos were taken on my Samsung Note 8. If you've enjoyed this content, please upvote, comment, and consider following me for more content.
My girls like the playground, so we used to be fairly regular visitors at one time. Never did do the mangroves walk though, because it was down from storm damage on the day we'd planned to.
I hope you're never tempted to eat at the cafe near the boat ramp! I really wouldn't recommend it there. I think we did eat at the hotel once many moons ago and that was good.
Have you been since the renovations?
We had to get our key pass for the mangrove trail from that cafe. The old lady was super polite with me, no worries. She proceeded to serve an Indian gentleman (who was just as polite as I was) and was super rude to him for no reason. I'd give their food a miss based on her attitude.
We've been since some were done, but I'm not sure if it was complete. I'm trying to remember if that climbing thing in the picture was there. They used to have some digger things that my girls played on shortly after we arrived in Australia. I think they've gone now in the renovations.
Sounds like that cafe leaves a bad taste in the mouth all around!

Stay strong, keep steeming.
We often hit the playground on the way through to family holidays on Yorke Peninsula.
We're down South, so it's a good chance to stretch our legs before heading off to Port Wakefield.
The pirate ship is pretty cool; and the smell can be tolerable if the wind is in the right direction.
I always stop here on the way, and grab a burger with the lot.
They do the old-school, grease dripping down your arm, onions falling in your lap - style burgers you just can't find any more.
Ahh, the pirate ship! (I'm super tired and spelt that as shit at first... probably a fitting name if you're there and get hit with easterly winds.)
That's what dreams are made of. Sounds delicious like the Cavan Steak Van. Have you had on of their mean sangas?
No, it's either that burger on the way or the bakery in Port Wakefield.
Worth a try, you reckon?

My cousin played an American Football game in Australia a few years ago. He had some pictures on his Facebook. Very beautiful country. #TrojanWall
