Attractions of Dalat: #10 St. Nicholas Cathedral
The St. Nicholas Cathedral or the St Nicholas of Bari Cathedral to give it it’s full title is the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Dalat. This beautiful iconic structure stands in the centre of the city. The building was constructed by the French between 1931 and 1932 in the classic Romanesque style. The inside of the church was however, not completed until 1942. It replaced an older church that dated from 1917.
The main spire dominates the town, standing as it does at 47 metres. The stained glass was imported directly from France as was the norm in those days. The main entrance faces towards Lang Biang Mountain and stone walls of the Cathedral, 40 centimetres thick.

In front of the Cathedral is a statue of the Madonna. This is also the case with Hanoi Cathedral and the Notre Dame Basilica in Saigon. Though here the statue is outside the main gates.
