Attractions of Dalat: #1 Xuan Huong Lake
The Xuan Huong Lake is probably the most iconic attraction of Dalat. The lake is actually quite small having a perimeter of only 5 km (3 miles). However its impact upon, and value to the city cannot be underestimated. The lake is man-made, formed by the construction of two dams. These were built on a branch of Cam Ly River to create two small lakes. In 1932, during a huge storm the dams burst and it wasn’t until 1935 that the larger stronger one was completed. Seeing the Xuan Huong Lake today, it is manicured to perfection. It is a crescent shaped waterway and a delightful addition to the Dalat landscape.
The French colonists named it simply, Grand Lac meaning large lake. However in 1953 it was renamed Xuan Huong Lake in honour of the famous 19th century female poet. The banks all round this lovely spot are sloped and grassed, making the perfect place ti sit with a book, or merely to soak up the view. Young couples love to visit here to sail in the swan shaped pedalos. It stretched through the Dalat Flower Park and out towards Cu Hill. On a still evening it paints as pretty a picture as you could wish for.
Visitors come to stroll around, sail on the lake, or simply sit and pass the time. It has become a very popular spot among young Vietnamese lovers. A common sight is to see young couples cycling round Xuan Huong Lake on tandems, which can be hired.
Dalat, with its rarified air is a superb city to visit. It’s cooler than most places in Vietnam and a real pleasure to stroll around. The Xuan Huong Lake is a large part of its appeal. This is an extremely popular attraction, among tourists and local alike.
