Why Romania is the perfect European country to settle down in for successful steemians and other digital freelancers.

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

Romania is a overlooked country that a lot of people would never consider as an option to settle down in for a while or even permanent. Here is why i think these people are wrong!, all based on my own personal experience on a country i didn't even think as a possibility myself

my first mountain conquered in Romania

Millions are leaving the country, so why would you go to live there?

Romania consist of a large population of around 20 million, but in the recent years around 2 million people have left the country. Why? there's a lot of reasons but mainly because the salary in Romania is very low and also got a lot of political problems, that pretty much any other country will give them better salary and living standards and since it's so easy to move into other countries inside of EU, why not?

So why on earth would i recommend to live in a country that masses of people literately flees from?

It's all about seeing potential in the country you wish to live in and Romania got so many known reason and hidden surprises you first will realize when learning about the country.

Romania is CHEAP

No surprise here but it is truly one of the most cheapest countries to live in inside of Europe, But of course this also means that the salary is very low. If you earn about 500 euro/month your salary is about average in Romania. But what if you could get around this barrier and start earning even more? This is where multiple opportunities can show itself and actually create yourself a rather wealthy life within Romania.

For a lot of digital freelancers/nomads and even in our new recent times.. successful steemians. It does no matter where in the world you are working from. Because of that settling down in a cheap country might actually prove to be worthwhile. Especially because Romania got so much else to offer than being cheap, but i will cover that further down.

Another big bonus you can find very attractive is the special language jobs that are offered in the country gives an absurd amount of money compared to the average salary. For me just sole reason i know Danish and English can give me a easy salary of 1000-1400 euros/monthly. While it's no where close to what i originally would earn in Denmark, it still would make me quite wealthy compared to the expenses of the country. All because i can speak two other languages. So if you have found yourself not quite yet there in terms of relying on earning money from outside the country, this might be a good short term solution.

Even in the most expensive city Bucharest, the prices of things are almost laughable. You can find a decent apartment in the heart of Bucharest for between 100 - 350 euro/month. You buy bread from the bakery for 20 cents and for merely 10 euro can you have full access for a month in metro and/or the bus. Oh by the way if you are a student, trains in the whole Romania is also free.

So if you happened to earn a little bit on eg. steemit, maybe from a financial viewpoint Romania wouldn't be too bad to consider?

Exploring the stunning nature

Endless opportunities for exploration

If you are not used sit in one place as many digital nomads are, then Romania might be a good country where you can live and not feel stuck in place. There's so many great things to see and experience that it's just straight up impossible to make a complete list. But let me summarize some of the opportunities that i already have found in the country:

The outdoors

The nature of Romania is to me where the country truly reveal it's beauty. For all those who loves natures and outdoor activities will have a blast and there's something for every season.

In winter when everything is covered in snow it's a no brainer that snowboarding and skiing is on the list. Or for those truly daring can test their strength with some intense winter hiking in the deep mountains of Romania.

In spring and summer is where you will see every single outdoor activity open up. Hiking, biking, paragliding and much much more. If city life is simply not for you, the fresh mountain air and the clean rivers will surely make you feel right at home.

Maybe you fancy to be spending your time by the coast? great! because Romania borders up to the black sea and combined with the intense heat during summer, it couldn't be more convenient for a ideal summer trip.

From my own viewpoint who usually blogs about adventures and travels, having base in Romania is more than ideal for me, it's a part of my lifestyle i wouldn't trade for anything else.

Traditional cloth and food on the street, not a unusual sight

The culture and it's people

Romanian people are very unique and a interesting mix, where you see clear influence from the western, the Russian and Turkish world. Because of the low tourism in the country you will find it completely unspoiled and see the true nature and tradition of the people. Romanian people are truly hospital and warm people. They are extremely helpful and usually you don't even have to ask for the help. If someone notice you try to orientate yourself or struggling with something, people will not ask but just straight up help you without asking. It's not unheard of that when walking through the street some stranger will just start talking with you out of no reason. Once a old woman told me while i was buying a ticket she thought i was a beautiful young man, with no intention except just speaking her mind and making me having a better day. Even better when they see you don't speak their language, they tend to get even more curious and will try their best to have a conversation with the limited English they can. People are just truly warm and the hospitality is supreme.

It's something that cannot be described with words but have to be experienced.

new friends from Poland, Italy and Romania

International people coming to Romania

All though the younger generations knows how to speak English they are not all very fund of it. But no worries, because there's a lot of internationalism going on in Romania, Especially in the capital Bucharest.
Here you will find people who have decided to settle down for years or people who just temporary comes for a few months to study or work. Nonetheless you will not find yourself short of opportunity to reach out to other like minded people who have decided to visit or live in Romania and experience the country together.

I have even participated in some cryptocurrency discussion events and many other cool events that also are made also for foreigners. If you just start looking a bit around you will quickly find company no matter your passion and interests.

The conclusion

Romania got more to offer than a lot of people realize and it's a country that sees a fast development. While it's not the country you would go to for capitalistic reasons, it is a country you would go for to fulfill many other needs. The people are hospital, the nature is stunning and all at the same time it is cheap to set up a life, no matter if you prefer to stay in the heart of Bucharest or starting a life on the countryside. My life have surely changed and a lot of perspectives on what i want is now different since i decided to move to this most interesting country. Maybe one day i will become a full time steemian myself in a few years?

That's a great perspective to have and you make a great point about any amounts of passive/online income having much more spending power in Romania. If you have a better standard of living and lifestyle then it makes sense to spend lots of time there. That kind of point reminds me of the book called "The Four Hour Work Week" have you read it? He talks about living like a king in Thailand with a relatively small amount of online income

Hmm that's interesting! I'm gonna look the book up! Could be interesting to see other perspectives on this matter. Romania is a good country in my case because it'd within Europe, making it possible for me to live here as long as I want. But in general many eastern countries could be seen like that! Thanks for the tip man!

Yeh and same currency as Denmark too right!? Not sure the climate there quite compares to Thailand though!

Not dame currency sadly! Haha:) nah Romania is more vary. Winter time it can go down to - 20°. And during summer as high as 40°. So huge temperature swings here. Also not as humit as Thailand of course!

Great post. I wish it was easy to just go live anywhere in the world without having to deal with borders and governments.

For those in the EU though, Romania looks like a great spot.

Yeah that is one of the good Perks of living inside eu I guess:) thanks for stopping by!

Great write up and promo for Romania - I see Bulgaria as a similar spot, very nice, lovely girls and cheap (still). I am there every year as my wife is from the Black Sea coast there. I even considered to live and work there - but I am still here as of various other reasons but who know.

Thanks a lot! Yes Bulgaria can be seen as very similar I believe. It most be amazing to live by the Black Sea coast. For me the idea of living in Romania is just getting stronger and stronger!

By the way the girls In Romania are lovely as well, after all it was one of them who made me move to Romania:)) haha!

Black Sea is awesome in Summer! Agreed on the Romanian Girls, saw some, was highly impressed... but not allowed lol

Hah! Thats how it is!

the total and whole picture is about romania is here with an article, impressed!

The East certainly deserves more exploration. It is on my list.

How much Romanian can you speak?

I am starting to learn a few words and sentences! Also I know how to pronounce the things I read although I don't know their meaning yet. Romanian is a very different language compared to danish. Almost nothing In common.

Romanian has more in common with Latin. It is a leftover from the Roman Empire. But if you look back far enough, even Danish is related to aforementioned two, as they are all Indo-European languages. The "common" words indicate the tribal warrior culture that is their roots.

How long have you been living there? How easy is it to get a work or residency visa?

Such interesting knowledge! I have seen quite some words close to the English language! And so more easy to understand sometimes.

I have by now lived there for a little under two months! To get work in my case seems easy if you have another language other than English. (like danish). Also since it's inside EU I do not need anything approved to start working or living here. (not to my knowledge)!

I am a paraglider pilot. That alone sold me.

By all means come join us! Haha:)) tried it for the first time two weeks ago! Awesome!

Are you going to get your pilots license? Its great fun.
