Kokoda Memorial Track (1000 steps)
Melbourne, Australia.
I thought it might be good to share my experience in taking the Kokoda Memorial Track. They call it the 1000 steps, but I can assure you that it is certainly more than that.
I have taken this track in the past, and it's certainly a good workout. Though it has been a while since I've returned, and at 35 I'm not quite as fit as I once was. I struggled.
Not only is it a nice way to exercise outdoors and take in the surrounds and the fresh air, The track has a war time theme to it. The original Kokoda track is in Papua New Guinea, and this particular track is designed to commemorate the trail that the Australian troops followed during World War Two. There are many statues, displays and plaques that provide some historical context. I have included some photos of these:
I was actually pretty shocked by the undertone of casual racism on this plaque, the "fuzzy Wuzzy angels" and "dark skinned friends" isn't exactly neutral language towards people of a different ethnicity
There are actually two tracks that can be followed. One is slightly easier, more of a straight climb, with both a wide path as well as steps to help climbing.
The harder one though is mostly narrow steps, which can be quite worn, loose and slippery
There are rest stops along the way, and often they include the plaques which I mentioned earlier, so you can take in some history while you catch your breath.
There were a couple of breaches that has broken across the path. One seems to be turned into somewhat of a display, the other seems to have just occurred recently and likely hasn't been dealt with yet.
I also had Garmin on and tracking, so here's some digital analysis of the trek
(As you can see, I'm not lying when I say I struggled.
Overall it is an enjoyable workout, here's some more photos take. Of both the path and surrounding area.

farq I'm a typical native from the Kokoda area viewing your post. I'm glad you went to the area to took the shots and post on a global social platform. i think you enjoyed the adventure but if I were you I should got the shot for the longest bridge in PNG (The Kumusi River) with a few remarks.. WELCOME TO THE FAMOUS TOURIST TRACK IN PNG....
I think you're mistaken. I did not go to PNG. I went to a spot in Melbourne, Australia that is named in memory of the Kokoda trek the Aussie troops took.
I'm sure this one is much easier to hike than the real Kokoda
i wish i had hiking spots like this. i always try at least 10000 steps a day.
I used to have that target. Now I work in a spot where I drive to work everyday instead of walking to public transport. My step count has come crashing down.
that sucks man. this is my secret move your legs up and down like your walking but stay in one place when watching tv, brushing your teeth, standing up at home and all those steps will definitely add up.
Hi @farq, this does not look like your average stroll in the park, that's for sure.

It looks like a beautiful place to walk and work out. The racism part - I don't think people even now realize how much racism has been an accepted part of our societies..... Hope we get away from that soon. All of us. All races.....
yeah... the thing about that is that it isn't intended to be derogatory. It talks about the Papuans in a positive light. The general theme I got from it was that the Papaun's basically saved the Australians. However they choose to focus on physical traits to identify the Papuan's by.
and yes it is a great place to exercise.... took in some really nice views as you can see.
