Iceland Plan and The First Waterfall (Day 2)

The Plan

The Iceland trip was a relatively last minute affair. It started when my wife's brother's wife (what do you call that?) planned a trip with two friends. The brother in law did not have much interest in Iceland. However, in the planning stages they found they wanted a good driver, so later the brother in law agreed to go and be the driver. After that, my wife decided she wanted to go also and the two of us tagged along. The two of us did very little planning, just booked the same hotels in the planned 10-day route, and coordinated what to bring.

We all knew going in, for example, that food in Iceland is very expensive. So we wanted to be as frugal as possible. This brings us now to the second day of the trip, with the following itinerary:

  • Buy stuff from Costco
  • Visit a waterfall
  • Visit a geyser
  • Visit a second, "secret" waterfall
  • Visit a volcanic crater

Yup... Iceland has a Costco wholesale, so at least we can count on some bulk savings for some of our food. The other thing is that one of us brought a portable propane stove which would come in handy in the more rural areas. Oddly, the Costco did not have any propane: we were told to go to the gas stations (N1) to buy them.

With the amount of stuff we were already carrying, it really boggles my mind how we could cram all the things we bought with our luggage and all the goodies from Costco that we hoped would last us as long as possible.

Yup. Even pizza.

So we got a few cheap meals already from that. A shrimp platter for the road, some croissants, some food we planned to cook for dinner. Perishables? Well, it's Iceland. We can stick it outside! (But we didn't)

The Waterfall

The first scenic stop: The Gulfoss Waterfall. It was quite a crowded tourist place. Since it was still snowy, some of the trails were not open to the public, the ones that would get you quite close to the water's edge. You can see the snow-covered path in this next image.

There's a path that allows visitors to walk along the top to get different angles of this beautiful waterfall. I read that this waterfall frequently shows rainbows as well. Today was snowy unfortunately, so no chance of that!

On the trail...

The colors of this brownish creek stood in contrast to the black and white landscape so I stopped to take a quick picture. Looks all rusted and muddy.

Also along the way I thought my wife's sunglasses were really cool and tried to snap one where the reflection would show part of the waterfall. Hmm... If you zoom in you can kind of see... something. Ah well, mainly was another contrast photo. Those shades really stood out!

Canyon view

The image above is one of my favorite shots that I took, showing water tumbling from the side and showing the canyon walls. Stunning...

And one with me! My shades aren't as cool. At least the scenery makes up for it.

This was a particularly fun waterfall to explore, and it's really no wonder that it's so popular. So many different angles on the waterfall, and a well developed trail. At the top there is also a relatively large store with food and free bathrooms (according to travel guides, this is a big deal, most public bathrooms cost about $2).

After this we headed to our next destination, the hot spring geyser!

Aaaaaaaaaaah, what amazing landscapes!! OMG, they look so big and so lovely. Now I want to go there T_T

In your last, picture, for example, those flat surfaces that spread into the horizon, the little patches of green, the fog that covers the distance in a cold remembrance that the world is covered in water... <3 Thank you so much for showing these inspiring landscapes. I'm honestly emotionally touched by them.

Yeah... It's funny because it doesn't quite match my recollection. Probably some coloring tweaked. Still was very beautiful though.

"Cold remembrance that the world is covered in water" very poetic.. and sums up the feeling of Iceland weather wise ha!

I'm looking forward to your next post! Iceland is my dream trip.... thanks for taking me along.

No problem! It's fun to write about and remember all the cool things that we saw :)

Love the pics! And yes those shades are awesome for contrast :D

Mmmm Costco pizzzzzaah

I think I'd go with 'sis-in-law' for ease :P

The pizza is different than what we have here too: BBQ chicken flavor. Wild!

Lol. BBQ chick is my oldest son's fav. I'm more of a meat feast kinda girl :P

There is so much natural beauty in Iceland, lovely place

My wife's brother's wife - probably sister in law? I don't think even the Chinese don't have a name for that relationship

Yeah let's go with that :). It sure is beautiful.

Ha! The Costco, is the food taste the same? Canyon view is amazing, well done!

They have mostly the same stuff plus some local stuff like the little Langostines in the next post :) . And the pizza with BBQ chicken is different than what they have here in New York. Yum.

Love Langostinos! We can get those at costco here sometimes--

I almost booked a city break to Reykjavik last week, but changed my mind due to it being April (cold) and it seemed very expensive (you confirmed that!).

The hot spring geyser was costing around £100 each to visit. It reminded me of a trip to Lapland years ago, lovely, very cold and very expensive.

It wont put me off though, that geyser is a place I want to visit. Ill look forward to your next one that's about it.

Ooh well there will be a hot spring place, but that's not what's coming just yet. The geyser is the one that shoots up every few minutes or so. But yeah there are some really beautiful spots! Relaxing in a Hot spring is one of the top experiences for sure also.

There's the snow lol, looks like the same amount we have here. We did get a snow storm a week or 2 ago, so more of it needs to melt... :(
Love your wife's sunglasses btw, pretty cool :p

That shot you took that you say is your favorite, I would say is mine too. It speaks in volumes, to me about life. Strange how nature can be our teachers but very cool nonetheless.

Very true. The things we find in nature...

That creek though. I thought it was just pure mud!

I love all the photos Evan! Even the sunglasses reflection! I love your photo too!

I love everything. :) Love seeing Iceland! I better take note that the place is expensive. Aja!

Yeah sticker shock for sure. Stock up on ramen :P. Thanks!

Hahaha Ramen is not that bad!

You have amazing photos of your trip Eon!!! That Canyon view is so amazing!

Yeah I'm surprised I could tease that out of my camera. Very happy with that one
