Travel Tip: Hranice Abyss, the deepest underwater cave in the world!

in #travel6 years ago

Dear Steemit friends and followers,

Welcome to my Travel Tip series where I promote some of the most beautiful places, interesting landmarks and impressive architectural sites of my homeland, the Czech Republic.

Today, I have something very special for you as I will take you to an extraordinary natural site that is found right outside my Czech hometown of Hranice.

With a total confirmed depth of 473 m (1,552 ft), the Hranice Abyss is currently the deepest known underwater cave in the world. Out of this depth, at least 404 m (1,325 ft) is under the water level but what makes this place even more fascinating is that fact that the total depth might be actually even much greater. Some experts estimate the Hranice Abyss might be up to 1,200 m (3,937 ft) deep, which would be a truly outstanding speleological finding once confirmed.

However, we might never know for sure how deep the mysterious abyss really is since mud, low temperatures and the mineral composition of the water make diving to the bottom extremely difficult.

For obvious reasons, the inside of the Hranice Abyss is not open to the public but you can get close to the edges of this extraordinary natural landmark. There are several nice hiking trails leading to it.

Also, if you decide to visit this place, make sure to check out my hometown Hranice too :)) Located just some 3 km (2 mi) outside the abbys, Hranice is a beautiful historic town with many pieces of impressive architecture.

Great to hear that but sorry to disappoint you but it is not suitable for diving at all. Have a good one. Tomas

Looks pretty and weird and looks a lot like the tropics.
I wish to visit it... but It's a pity it's not open to the public

thank you @czechglobalhosts

The bottom of the cave is not opened to the public but you can access the edges to see the actual Abby without any problems. It is very pretty but far from looking like tropics. Thank you for stopping by and have a great night. Tomas

To be very honest this is a quite new thing for me Hranice Abyss, the deepest underwater cave in the world

I have heard about many tunnels and caves infact dark and long caves but HRANICE ABYSS is something different, gained my attention. I would love to read more about this wonderful essence of the nature :)

Thanks a lot Tomas for providing all of us the beauty of your culture, being a student of Cultural studies it really means a lot to me :)

Stay Blessed

To be honest it is not surpising you don't know much about the place... It is not touristy at all besides locals going there for relaxing walks. Have a good one. Tomas

Swimming at such places has always been my dream. At places like this we can explore nature at its best.

I am sorry to disapoint you but this one is not suitable for swimming at all. But I do love swimming as well:)....

Thanks for acknowledging me. 😊😊

Terrific!
How did they measure so deeply? In a cave at such a depth it is extremely difficult and dangerous to operate even a remote device. I took part in the expedition of the Russian Geographical Society where an attempt was made to examine the bottom of the lake in the Caucasus. Even with the most sophisticated equipment, they could not move farther than 300 meters into the depths. In this miracle, one of the devices was not lost.

Hi! I am glad you did manage to read the post. That is definitely something of your interest:).... they did manage to dive to a certain depth but then used the remote devices to explore further down... The expedition was done in the cooperation with Polish divers. Have a great night. Tomas

There is nothing beautiful than nature

How do you purnounce that? Please tell me its in a way I can slur an accent into Harness (the) Abyss.

It's good to see the cave through your post.
