Three Countries in 24 Hours with ZERO Sleep! 🤪

It's Not All Sunshine and Beaches

Traveling isn't always easy. It takes lots of time and patience to get from one place to another, especially halfway across the world. And I told you guys that I would share EVERYTHING (including the not so glamorous) with you during this trip. But don't get me wrong, although I might complain about the process, I always love seeing the destination. And our next destination was Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia!

After only a couple of hours of sleep, Kristen and I took off in our taxi at 4am from Ubud, Bali to the airport which is an hour to the south. We were headed to Kuala Lumpur where we would have a 6-7 hour layover before heading on to Shanghai, China. We knew this was going to be a long day but we purposely planned it this way so that we could see Kuala Lumpur and mark off another country on this trip.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

After a quick 3-hour flight, we landed in Kuala Lumpu (KL), Malaysia. Our gameplan was to get through immigration as fast as possible, get a storage locker for our backpacks, grab a taxi, and head to Patronas Towers which are an iconic landmark in KL. About one hour in the line at immigration, 30 minutes figuring out where storage was, and another hour in our taxi, we arrived at our destination! These buildings had been worth the trouble getting here. With its pristine, shiny towers, this landmark stands out like a sore thumb in the middle of this bustling city.

Underneath the towers was a shopping center where we quickly located the food court. We only had a couple of hours before we had to turn around, and take the 1-hour taxi back to the airport where we would board for China. We found a vegetarian restaurant with local Malaysian food. We got spring rolls and curry noodles with veggies which did not disappoint.

We quickly ate up our food and grabbed a taxi back to the airport where we picked up our bags and some last minute souvenirs before going through immigration again. Luckily, the immigration line was much shorter going in than it was coming out. So we got through pretty quick. We boarded our flight at 6:30pm and landed in Shanghai around midnight (5 1/2 hours later).

Once we were in Shanghai, we realized that the metro didn't run after midnight. The Shanghai metro is the fastest and cheapest way around the city so this was a real bummer, especially considering we had now been up for 22 hours straight with little sleep to begin with. So instead we found a taxi at Arrivals which got us to our hotel in just under an hour, but cost us around $45 USD. By now we were COMPLETELY exhausted. Running on fumes, we checked into our hotel, headed up to our room, and plopped down on the bed. This day was finally over but the memories would last a lifetime!

Great shot under the Petronas Towers. These iconic towers are definitely on my bucket list!

Haha, I did 4 countries in one day back in 2016, when I was going from Kaliningrad to Russia through the Baltic countries. Not that hard due to their size :D

@brandonfrye, these days are the best. In the moment it is hard but amazing memories for the rest of your lives.
I have to add that this is the first post I read from you and I realy like your writing style so I followed you. Exited for more

Greetings @experimentel

Thanks so much @experimentel. I’m glad you enjoyed it. 😊

You guys look alert to me :) but maybe you are forcing your eyes open :)

The excitement keeps us going I guess. But we’re worn out for sure. 😴

ZERO SLEEP can really be bad for the human brain. Be careful.

I don’t doubt it. We got caught up the next day with around 11 hours of sleep. Feeling MUCH better now. 😁

Hope you guys had a good rest after the days "job". 22hrs without sleep, that's a whole of time. Travelling sure is amazing, but it takes a whole lot of effort too, the thing is that, the effort always does pay off!

Kuala Lumpur is beautiful!

Enjoy your stay in Shanghai.

We did. I think we got around 11 hours of sleep after all of that. We REALLY needed it.

That awesome! Yeah, you did.

What an amazing grind after already so much travel! You guys are truly hardcore tourists but that is probably the best way to get the most of going half way around the world!

I can tell you we’re about ready to get home and put our feet up lol. It’s been a blast though.

I guess a good strategy is to leave the sleeping for the plane!

Awesome glad you were able to spend a little time in Malaysia. Those towers always show up in movies, I would love to visit someday. That food looked amazing too! :)

What, no Bangkok? Next time swing through to say hi to @suitcasemama and I :)
