Travels With Connie #54 Interrupted
Sometimes I know exactly where I am going. In that case it’s easy, pick a route and go.
More often I have an idea where I’d like to end up, and generally speaking a direction to go.
.
Once in a while I just follow the front wheel and see where it takes me.
Connie and I are on the road. We have a direction and a destination, but the route we'll take is a little fuzzy. It's really how we travel best.
You can plainly see that Connie is pretty well loaded. The bottom two bags are camping gear, the top bag is clothes. The left saddle bag has cameras and cigars in it, the right is primarily foul weather gear and tools including an air compressor and a tire repair kit.
This is Parker Dam in Arizona. It's a little visited place, but a big part of the hydrology of the Colorado River.
We spend our first night on the road in Las Vegas at the Stratosphere Casino, a pretty good room rate for Vegas. My morning inspection reveals a very small oil leak in the left shock tower. Just a spot really, we'll be fine.
Highway 93 up the eastern side of Nevada. Not much traffic is an understatement. Nevada is near 600 miles (1000 km)long if you enter the pointed end and go all the way to Idaho, which we are doing. It is quite possible that I may have inadvertently exceeded the posted speed of 65 MPH a time or two.
We spent the night in Elko, Nevada. An interesting little berg, I will certainly go back one day to explore the town and the area. Morning inspection revealed a couple of drops had fallen from the shock tower. I was beginning to become concerned.
This is the only real business except for ranches for most of 100 miles North of Elko. A bar and restaurant with a little bit of an RV park attached. I was obvious I was in 'see gas, buy gas' mode.
Nevada 225. Obviously a secondary road, the altitude was pretty high and it's a deliciously cool and inviting ride.
The end of Nevada 225 and the beginning of Idaho 55. This road will take me to the backcountry of SW Idaho, a place I'd never been. It's interesting country, another place I will return to for further investigation.
I spent the night in Ontario, Oregon. It is just across the Snake River from Idaho.
My morning inspection found a small puddle of oil out of the shock. For the rest of the day I would take it as easy on the suspension as I could. Not a simple project with the load and me on Connie.
A good look at the Snake River from the Oregon side looking into Idaho. I had begun to think I could hear a noise in the front suspension, but I was still a ways from a reasonable place to stop for repairs.
This view is near the top of the Blue Mountains in Oregon. Very picturesque place. This turnout included a pretty good bump that let me know the fluid level in the shock was getting critical.
I made it to Kennewick, Wa shortly after noon. It was a planned stop to spend some time with my brother and Sister-in-Law. It's a good thing they are two of my favorite people because Connie is going to be in the hospital for at least a couple more days.
So. We are current with the trip, and have several places that we will go back to for a better look. Thanks for coming along on the ride in real time.

A lot of stuff on your motorcycle. How to drive with so much stuff? Uncomfortable and not good i think so.
Well it sounds like the old girl needs a transplant, I think she will recover just fine from what I've heard about sluts, oops, I meant struts.
Real nice scenery you have provided us shots of, I just love those kind of roads and mountains that you are traveling in. look forward to the rest of the trip.
Well, it seems parts are on the Pony Express. Fast then slow now :) That kind of country is just about my favorite sort of riding. Lots of looking and lots of thinking.

Got it, I will take care of that right now.
what type of bike is that?
It's a 2008 Kawasaki Concours. A big sport tourer that is made to go long. All the concours carry the name Connie,
AH, good luck with Connie! Fast recovery :D :D
I finally saw that coffee holder hahaha so cool! Anyway, have a good time as you're already having and safe trip!
Can't have a ride without a sip of coffee now and again. It's the only reason I ride an open face helmet...
Your bike is so beautiful!
Thanks. I really am fond of her.
Are you heading up these parts? If so, let me know man....Love to meet up again.
I was sorta keeping that option in mind, but Connie needed $600 in remedial repair. Sorta took the 'extra' out of my ride :)
All good, let me know either way!
It looks like you are having a blast. The open road and you, an American adventure for sure.
Don't tell anyone, but i'm even enjoying the down time waiting for parts. My brother has a house project going that I can help with in the evenings, and during the day I have his SUV to explore in. And I just can't possibly spend enough time with he and my SIL.
Sometimes life gives us wrenches in our plans to enjoy things we hadn't planned, so enjoy your family!
Wow! Looks like an amazing trip on a fantastic bike!
Love the photos and really enjoyed reading about the places you visited!
We will talk more about the places, this is just sort of a 'real time' update. Glad you are along for the ride!
I really wish I would have gotten the bike before kids. Now wife won't let that happen ;)
You know what? I get that. I rode almost exclusively in the dirt during the 'child years' because I could sneak off for a couple hours and still be riding. I'd miss it if I didn't have it, but in truth, kids are a better deal.
I traded much of my hiking time for riding time over the years. For me, it was a fair trade. I'm guessing it wouldn't be for you. And you are almost never too old to start. Lots of really good schools and courses to give you the basics.
